I spend 14 years in the Canadian navy and I can tell you although they might not be involved in actions like we use to see during the cold war, they are an excellent deterrent for piracy and small factions that are triving on attacking commercial shipping

The US got complacent as time progressed...No matter where we were unless in US territory We always had extra topside watches on the Bow/fantail along with Roving Security whether anchored out or in port dockside when I was in the Navy.

No, the SM3 are for hitting incoming warheads in space. The SM2 can do surface to surface mode. Furthermore, the SM3 has a kill vehicle and no explosive warhead. The SM3 is a very complexe 3 stage rocket with a mobile kill vehicle that can change directions in space to hit incoming warheads .

@DaviesMotionPictures I think what you fail to understand is that few people stand up to us precisely because we have destroyers (and submarines, and many other incredible weapons). Just because nobody's breaking into the house doesn't mean you sell the guard dog. And you Brits are not our little accessory. Despite our differences as allies, you're still an important partner in the effort to maintain the balance of peace around the world.

I was a CIWS tech on an Arleigh Burke (DDG-73 USS Decatur) and I can tell you that isn't possible. CIWS will not shoot outbound targets. Also, the superstructure was in the path as well and CIWS has cutouts in its coverage to prevent shooting its own ship. What probably happened is that CIWS hit the missile before the ship, which can be seen in the footage, and it started to break apart but exploded late, as if the body broke away from the warhead and the warhead kept flying. It's expected for shrapnel to hit the ship if CIWS does its job due to its short range (1 mile or less) and speed of the targets, as it handles missiles traveling at speeds in excess of Mach 2. This seems like a very unlikely occurrence for the delayed explosion but possible.

Nice missile systems, on my first ship, we had the old Talos system ( 1973 U.S.S. Oklahoma City CLG - 5 ). We almost shot ourselves during missile ops. off the coast of Vietnam. What a crappy system.

i love how in the demonstration at 4:00 phalanx is incapable of destroying the simulated attack until AFTER it passes the ship. Phalanx is awful, Goalkeeper is far superior.
