After buying a 1982 Shannon 28 sailboat 3 months ago, and after many weekends of cleaning, maintenance, and learning it's systems, it's finally to the point where I can go for a sail. It's mid-July, so I make a trip out of it and go for 3 days. This will give me a chance to test the manual windlass and anchor equipment. This is also a test of the sails, running rigging, and the motor. I also find out how my house cat is going to react to a boat ride.

Very nice thanks for sharing. And boat kitty seems to be getting sea legs.

So glad you left your boat as is w the tiller on it. Too many of these lovely boats jammed a pedestal wheel into the cockpit and seems totally redundant to me

Beautiful boat. Great shakedown outing! I have hull #9 of the 28. I'd say one priority is the rig a couple reef lines, just in case. There are two good reef points on your sail, ready to go. The jib not sliding past the stay is a common issue, and almost impossible in

That's a fine looking boat. Glad you got the mild conditions to uncover the various issues.

My Shannon 28 was fitted with a Yanmar 2GM 13hp. It would comfortably cruise at 2000rpm, giving 5 knots of boat speed in flat water. Diesels need to be worked hard or the bores glaze which reduces compression. As a rule of thumb, increase the revs until you see black smoke from the exhaust, then throttle back just enough that the smoke goes away. Lovely boat.

Thanks for sharing the info. For the rest of the trip I ran it at about 1800rpm for 4.5 kn. Just found notes in the manual by the boatbuilder himself, recommending 2400rpm as best, that should certainly reach 5 kn +. I was taking it easy to test stern tube, impeller, belts, etc.

Buoy IPA, one of my favorites! I’m about to buy another boat and thinking about keeping it in the south sound. Sailing on Columbia has run its course for me.

The Columbia is limited, but long. I did have major sticker shock when I paid for WA sales tax thoe.

Have you ever seen the composite propane tanks? They come in a lot of sizes. The best part is they don't rust . You can see level of propane in the tank as well.In a fire they do not explode just melt and are 50 percent lighter than Steel tanks. The only draw back is they are expensive.
@WaterTrails
@WaterTrails 4 года назад
I've considered those, but I've heard (via youtube) that some countries won't refill them because of their local regs requiring steel.

@@WaterTrails Ahh maybe. I read the pipe fill connections may also be different? Alright have a good weekend.

I believe that the Coast Guard no longer maintains the Loran network. I may be wrong but with the satellite navigation systems there no longer is a need for Loran.

True, but it appeared to me that the electronics makers of the past had a sense of humor.

Did you actually anchor at Hope Is. or use the buoy? Have you disconnected that obsolete LORAN unit? A tour of the interior would be great!
@WaterTrails
@WaterTrails 3 года назад
Anchored at Hope, obsolete is turned off. A tour is coming, until then, it's extremely small, simple, practical and in beautiful teak. Aft third of the boat is dedicated to engine and sail stowage by design - which results in a smaller-than-usual cabin interior, but, most aft bunks are used to store sails, this one isn't pretentious about it (I'm very satisfied with it).
@spankmeairlines
@spankmeairlines 3 года назад
@@WaterTrails interesting that you anchored at Hope Is. I've always found it sketchy on west and south sides because of how fast the current runs. I've seen some anchor on east side ... never tried it myself.

@@spankmeairlines The holding was quite good. I only left because the wind changed to blow me toward shore.

Is Minette a Russian Blue? Also, why aren't you using a Tiller Tamer type device?

She's a Chartreux. In later videos I have a tiller extension, but mostly just use the auto pilot.
