Good video. I was ex manual transmission engineer for Borg Warner Australia responsible for local T5 production in mid 80s. The T5 has paper lined twin cone blocking rings on 1-2. The lubricant was ATF with a Lubrizol friction/gear additive that was added separately. Be careful when replacing with a generic low viscosity gear oil. It may not shift well.

Very cool! I’ve owned a few fox bodies over the years and currently have the powertrain of one in my Mercedes Coupe. That one thermostat bolt is annoying but otherwise the 5.0 is a pretty easy engine to work with. Also don’t underestimate them, they may not have a high horsepower rating but it’s a torquey engine and a light car, they will still keep up with modern traffic just fine.

Holy hell. I literally *just* watched episode 1 this morning. Fun fact- the underhood insulation is the *only* place on an 87-89 (prior to March of 89) that has the pony logo. Oh, and an '87 had single stage paint. So if it has clear coat, it's been painted. My recommendation is put subframe connectors on it- *now* The car will thank you. I also stand by my prior statement- On a bone stock 5.0 with full cats, a muffler delete sounds best.
@Shakerhood69
@Shakerhood69 Год назад
I think they may have used some single stage paints all the way through. The 93 Cobra came in 4 colors, Teal, Black, and 2 different Red's, think the 1 Red was single stage.

@@Shakerhood69 You are correct. I *think* it was 1990 when clear coat became available on certain colors but I'm not sure.
@houseofno
@houseofno Год назад
You're incorrect regarding the pony logo. The hood insulation was NOT the only place the pony logo could be found. For all 1989 cars (the car's 25th anniversary) had a small Mustang pony emblem on the passenger side (right hand side) of the front dashboard. All first year Mustangs are legally '65 cars, despite 64.5 being partially correct - the 64.5 had some minor production changes, such as a generator instead of an alternator, and a lot of Falcon parts being put into place to exhaust the inventory). Ford didn't actually put out an official 25th anniversary car due to cost cutting moves. For 1990 models, Ford made a limited edition number of what were called the 7-up convertibles (all monochromatic green exterior paint jobs with white leather interiors). This is informally considered to be the closest enthusiasts got to a 25th anniversary car.
@JRC99

Owned two GTs in my lifetime. The ‘87 and ‘88 model were largely converted to mass air systems from the factory speed density system. The fact that interior is not more faded than it is being a t-top model (rare by the way, t-tops we’re discontinued after ‘88) is incredible. Good, good find.

I don't remember where he bought it from, but here in the Midwest, many Mustang owners store their cars all winter and only drive them in the summer months. This would explain the low miles and lack of rust. The hatch was a problem area as the water would not drain well from the hatch area and that would be the 1st area to start rusting if you washed the car regularly. The hatch is universal too btw .... all models carry the same design. I wish someone would clean the glass.. it was driving me insane watching you drive. 🙃

I regularly see drivers towing a trailer, caravan, by the side of the road with a missing wheel due to the bearing imploding due to lack of maintenance/grease. ... . I was following a guy with a 6 wheel loaded car trailer recently. Anyways the left rear wheel was smoking. I tried to wave the driver down too late the bearing exploded. The wheel then Separated from the trailer continuing into the side of the road while bits of wheel bearing sprayed out everywhere! ... Also people rarely change tyres on trailer's..not unusual have 10y+ tyres on a trailer/caravan.

Manuals have been phasing out of the US ever since the late 70’s and it’s at a point where basically all used cars that have a manual transmission go for a premium compared to an automatic version, & I can only think of a handful of new cars that offer the option. Civic Type R, Subaru WRX, BMW M3 & 4, The Toyota Corolla GR and GR86 (and soon the Supra), and a few select Porsches. But notice how those are all enthusiast sporty cars and basically every person who just wants a car to drive and every econobox has a automatic. Better gas mileage for city and highway driving, super easy to get the hang of the first time u ever step in a car, and shifts faster.

The 5.0's were always great cars/great motors. I always wanted a foxbody when i was a kid. Ended up my first 3 cars were 2 lincoln mark vii's 88 and 90 (yes they have 5o's and built on the foxbody platform) and an 88 mustang LX. Super fun cars. They were dirt cheap and so easy to find, now they are hard to find unmolested and way way more expensive. It was all about the foxbodys and iroc camaros for teens in the 90s-early 2000s

@@aaronbritt2025 oh i know. My buddy was going to buy an 86 four eyes with 56k for 25 or 28k. The only reason he backed out was because we live in MA and the car was in GA and he was a little worried it wasnt actually 56k. He was willing to buy both of us tickets to fly out there so i could look the car over for him. After a week or so he came to his senses and decides not to. It was really clean/well taken care of, just a couple things about it made it a little hard to tell if it really was 56k or 156k jus well taken care of or older restoration

Best way I found to get that right thermostat housing bolt is to loosen the distributor bolt, rotate the distributor counterclockwise so the TFI module is out of the way, and then you'll have a 90 degree swing on the wrench vs a 1/2 inch of movement. Just mark your distributor beforehand or put it back in time with a timing light afterwards.
@jacksmith2315
@jacksmith2315 Год назад
Ya marking the distributor doesnt always work. I had to pull one on a 96 f150 5.0, marked it in 2 spotd so i could put it back perfectly and still was off when reinstalled and had to get a timing gun to reset the timing. But its alright cause then you know where its set and advance or retard it to run better. I think factory was around 10° advanced but it runs best around 12-15. May be off a little but its right around there.

I’ve watched some of your videos in the past, this one hit the heart. My first brand new car I bought was a 1988 same color Cabernet red with same interior. I miss that car, I put a 3:73 gear set in and 155 svo speedometer, hold on !! I paid off the lot $11900 with 2 miles on it . 225hp best time at strip was 13.30 at 102. No t-tops. Now I have a 2024 shadow black carmine interior performance pack every box checked. Love your content. Worked in Joliet for a year at the old Amoco site now retired and back in Michigan. Like to check your shop if I ever get over to see friends.

Hey Alex, I noticed in the last video that you may have installed the fuel filter backwards. The new one you put in is in backwards compared to how the old one looked. Back in school, I begged my parents to get one, was so close but dad said it was to fast for me back then….. Oh another thing, it was a Florida car so no rust! One of the benefits about living down here! Great content btw, I will sub for sure, thanks for explaining things so well, it’s refreshing to see someone else besides me that has a passion for cars and can’t teach while repairing them!
