Very nice. One of the worst fires to beat is when it hits the duct work... get ready for the box to be transmitted a couple times for that...

I'm retired from prevention in a major department and it never stopped amazing me have many restaurant owners tried to save a few bucks by neglecting getting their grease ducts cleaned on schedule. You could always see that glow on the duct when the fire inside of it was like a blow torch. There were also the cleaning services that only cleaned as far as the eye could see. Most of the time the owners of the restaurants never knew they were getting taken until the fire. I'm thinking they could have paid for a few cleanings from the damage it caused.
@MusicLoverPearson

But what's worst becasue of the restaurant owners irresponsibility those people that lived in the apartments not only lost their homes but also their possessions as well.

It should be the landlord’s responsibility and required by insurance companies. Why would they trust tenants to pay for safety maintenance? Landlord is required to have and maintain fire detection systems and maybe extinguishing systems depending on local code.
@47fireguy16
@47fireguy16 2 года назад
@@tomdomenico If they are built to code, maintained and the duct system cleaned on schedule by qualified contractors they are pretty safe. The duct work is a special black iron material that is welded at seams. Where it passes by combustible surfaces the outside of the duct is wrapped with a protective wrap, such as Firemaster, made by 3M. Cook surfaces and the lower part of the duct are protected with a fire suppression system that has a Class K extinguishing agent made just for grease fires. It lowers the flashpoint of grease within seconds so you don't have to worry about re-ignition like you did with the old dry powder systems. I have seen duct fires where they actually glow from the heat. As I said, if they are built correctly and maintained correctly they are very safe. If owners cut corners they will burn and burn well.

Grease fires, which is probably what is the cause here, can race through a building and spread fire in many locations--the only thing worse is probably electrical system fires. In NYC, the majority of commercial grease fires are caused by owners being penurious when it comes to duct maintenance and cleaning--in particular, diners, Latin Food and Chinese food establishments have more grease fires because many of the dishes prepared involve deep frying or heavy use of oils. As the food vapors condense in the ductwork the fat droplets accumulate on the lining of the exhaust ductwork--if not properly cleaned out, that fat solidifies and it only takes a consistent source of heat or flame to catch the solidified grease--and once that happens the fire will accelerate rapidly and intensely in terms of fire load. Not to sound sarcastic but a good many of these types of fires are NOT by accident--more than one insurance fire has been staged where the owners will leave a deep fryer on after closing and the ANSUL system is sabotaged in some manner--once the grease in the fryer overheats the flames will rise and then work their way up the hood vents and into the exhaust ductwork or cockloft--I am sure firefighters dread these types of fires and with good reason--because many times the fire can be more widespread than it appears--as in the case of this video.

Back during THE WAR YEARS OF FDNY there was a unit that was tasked with taking pictures of multiple alarm Fires in New York City. It was designated as CAR 33 and CAR 71. Car 33 was The Photo Unit and Car 71 was called CANS which meant COMMUNITY AND NEWS SERVICES. Then they had Car 36 from The Community Relations Bureau. This was when the Fire Department Headquarters was at The Municipal Building on the Eleventh Floor and later at 110 Park Place at the corner of Church Street. What ever happened to those units?

I agree. I had a captain that was a great firefighter. Unfortunately he tried to imitate the ventilation practices of New York City. For example busting out windows after the fire was extinguished in a residential fire. Try raising them first. Then there was a time we had a bedroom fire that was extinguished and I caught him cutting a hole in the roof. I stopped him and brought him down and ask him why? He said it was an order to check attic. I said wouldn’t it be much cheaper and convenient just to pull the sheet rock ceiling in the fire room? Being a fire fighter does not give you a blank check to do what you want to.

One thing about a fire in the three story, it will make room for a thirty story. I don't see how the NYC firemen/firewomen do it. Narrow streets, cars and people everywhere. I have seen where cars have no where to go and just have to sit in front of a firetruck trying to get to the fire. My hat is off to you guys.

Thank you so much Brother, appreciate that. I was a smoke eater in the Navy. When I left I wanted to to join NYFD but they had just given a test prior to my enlistment ending. The NYFD did not give tests with great frequency. Half of my family was NYFD, half NYPD. I was advised to take the NYPD exam and when the test came up, to take it and lateral over. By the time the test came around I was well settled into NYPD and made a career of it. When 9-11 rolled around we all responded. I was one of the lucky ones. Two years later after 17 years OTJ I was diagnosed with COPD and PTSD and retired with disability. Maybe it was not meant to be. I figure I must still be here for a reason. I have nothing but great love for both organizations, but secretly still wish instead of putting on a vest I was pulling on bunker gear. ;)

Its hard to feel bad for people who chose to live above an operating kitchen, when the place bursts into flames.... Do they really think the underpaid workers, nor the penny pinching owners really give a crap? If so, they are as dumb as they get...
