Nick Murray: I notice you're using Apple Play, I tried it for like 15 min, found it to be annoying without any improvement in usability. And it requires Siri to be on constantly on iPhone, draining the battery. Have you tried using just Porsche's excellent interface?

Our 2007 Boxster S also has an intermittent issue with opening our garage door. I think it has to do with her mood. If she is frisky and wants to be driven more she will not allow us to put her to "bed" in the garage. On the other hand, after a long drive, if she is cranky and tired, she cheerfully opens the door.

Alcantara is a synthetic fabric that used to be called "ultrasuede." It went out of fashion in the 70s until auto manufacturers used the Italian name for it and reintroduced it. It's a cheap material compared to leather or premium cloth.

After watching your video, I am seriously considering cancelling my 2017 4S order. While the problems you describe may not affect the car's performance or leave you stranded (like your 991.1), they are hardly "minor". The leather tag on the console trim would be inexcusable on a 30K Hyundai, not to mention a 130K Porsche. The voice command issue suggests a software bug that was rushed into production (see RU-vid Motormouth Canada for a 4S review also showing software issues). The homelink transponder is a 20+ year old technology, hardly groundbreaking- it should work flawlessly in cars at this stage. In any case these issues reflect a serious lack of quality control from an automaker that supposedly epitomizes attention to detail. I sincerely hope these are all the bugs you will have to face, esp after the ordeal you went through with the 991.1. Best of luck, and I love your videos- they are the most entertaining and informative 911 reviews on RU-vid!

Well Nick... Three months ago I started shopping for a 997.2 series 911. Realizing how the popularity of this generation has held values higher than I expected, I moved my focus to the 991.1. I found 2, C4s that were well speced and priced fairly but... learning that a base model 991.2 (arguably) outperforms the 991.1 S-models, won my purchase. After all, the improvements to the PDK, steering and PCM, combined with the desireable aspect of the newer aesthetics along with significant warranty remaining... the 2016~2017 Base Carrera seems like an excellent value to me. 'Settling' for this 2017 Base model saved me 6k over the 2015 C4s I almost bought and because it's a Porsche CPO, the 4 years warranty provides a lot of confidence. This is my second week with the car and I'm very happy to have made this choice. Thanks a bunch for sharing your experience and insight on the 911 which really helped me a lot.

Sweet! I have to tell ya though, It annoys the hell out of me when we pay so much for these cars and have any problems at all. Last week my center retractable dash display just stopped and is now jammed halfway out. So, I have a 200 mile drive to the Audi dealership next week. I'm glad this one is less problematic than the 991.1, Great info on the stereo too! Thanks Nick!

My little Dachshund "Elliott" decided to run across my "all lock" button in my last X5. And it was while the car was running and at the airport! Security thought I was mad running back and forth and pounding on my windows. Thankfully the little guy hit the button to let me in. I did get a few claps from the peanut gallery after everything was said and done. Oh the memories.

I TOTALLY understand about the "too much power". I had the same issue when I moved from my older SL350 to the newer SL500 (4.7 twin turbo V8). I went from 245hp to 455hp with 512ft of torque and the issue was that when you floor it, you have that glorious feel of power... but it's over in 4 seconds... The SL350 I got to feel it and hear it and enjoy it more. I have an AMG GT now but if I ever pick up an SL as a fun/daily I'll go for the SL350...

My 911 premiums are super low compared to my 08 XKR, 11 STI, and 99 Z3. I have an 02 carrera 4s that was actually rebuilt through an insurance claim at the dealership. The wiring was attacked by a rat and insurance said replace the entire harness. Love your channel keep up the good work.

Have the same problem with the homelink system in my C7 and R8. If the garage doesn't open, keep creeping up to the door while pressing the button and it'll work eventually. Every single car I've owned with the homelink system has done this.

You deserve every ounce of the success getting an exceptional car. Enjoy. Suspect your wireless garage door problem is the frequency noise around the garage sensor and the low strength of the frequency in the car.

Having those small software issues kind of scares me. I've had a ton of those in my 991.1. Makes me a little hesitant to get another 911. As far as my premium, I pay $90/month for my Carrera. 35 year old male with a mostly cleaner driving record. Our 2017 C300 coupe is actually more expensive than the 911.

Hey Nick - yes insurance is surprisingly low. Just got a 997.2 and my premiums are lower than my Prius C (read: entry level, safe, slow, NON-SPORTS car). Also agree that for the most fun road driving, the 991.2's engine could be too much for the roads of North America. I find my 911S has it just right with 385/310 hp/torque.

About your insurance coverage; I am a young professional and wasn't able to afford a new Porsche 911, but I was able to a 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo (was less than $30K from Porsche of Tyson's Corner in the Washington DC area). The premiums for my Porsche are weirdly less than the premiums on my 2012 Ford Fusion SEL. Not much less, but it's still mind blowing for me that it's less at all! That said, I'm a bit of a wrench, so I got my Porsche knowing it needed a little bit of work and I love working on it. Hasn't left me stranded, warp speed fast, fun in a corner. The 996TT has a few problems with interior comfort and a rattle here and there, but I'm hunting down and deleting the rattles as time affords. Love your station - makes me think I'll be able to one day have a comfortable life, too :)

Interesting comment on insurance, I found the same and was completely shocked! Went from 2014 BMW 650i GC to 2017 911 Turbo S Cabrio (literally +$130k more than the 650i) and insurance went down a few hundred dollars. I also asked my agent and rec'd the same feedback. Certainly no complaints, but expected it to double... Very nice surprise indeed! Great video as always!

Have only recently started watching your videos Nick. What a great guy! Good taste in the car you picked. Very informative videos. If I ever have the money, I'll probably make a very similar choice as you. 911 C4S! Maybe with PDK though for fuel economy. I live in Minnesota, so AWD would really help, and I agree that the Turbo S just has too much power for USA speed limits. Cheers.

Totally agree with your comments on power Nick. More power sounds better but you can't use it - I had a GTR a couple of years back and best analogy for it on the road was akin to driving an F1 car down a pit lane. That car lasted just 4 months!!!

Great video Nick. Happy you are enjoying your beautiful 911. I'll echo what you said about insurance. I had a Honda Crosstour as my DD, and when I bought a brand new '14 Corvette Stingray, I added it to my policy. To my surprise, the premium on this brand new car with 460 HP worth about $70K at the time, was about two thirds of what the Honda's premium was. The Honda was probably worth $24K at the time. I never wrote to the company but asked my agent about it, he said a newer car has more safety features, which the vette definitely didn't. I left it alone!

Be prepared for Progressive to raise that rate upon renewal. Long story long, I have Geico for the family vehicles and when I bought my Corvette I got a quote of over 600 for 6 months. So I got another quote from Progressive and it was right around $400 so I bought it. 6 months later it went up over $100 dollars, then the next 6 months another $150 (No tickets or anything), so now Geico was back to being the cheaper choice. I think Progressive gives low quotes initially to bait you in and hope you don't notice the rate hikes. Great update video! You've got me wanting a Porsche and I never really considered them before.

I'm so happy for you Nick! You deserve it, especially what you went through with your 991.1 You looked so depressed back then, it's refreshing to see how happy you are. Although it seems the universe (and Tui) are clearly out to get you with parking brakes and door locks. Also, show us the upgraded infotainment! I heard it's supposed to be a lot better? Plus I love your opinion on it being possibly overpowered. I completely agree, it's always more fun to drive a slow car fast then to drive a fast car slow. Anything more than 350HP really starts to make the car too much to ring out on a back road and see how the car really behaves. Also it's Bur- mes- ter, not ber- meis- ter. But then again you Sa-Baah- ru so getting you to speak like an American is probably pointless.

With respect to the garage door opener issue, I have a 991.1 and had a similar experience. Hey Nick glad to hear your premiums are so affordable. As the owner of a 16 Cayman manual I can attest that my premium is about $450 even though I have minimal coverage. I think you are spot on in your explanation; Porsche owners tend to be responsible drivers (most anyway).

We had a 5 year old Mazda 3 in the family. It had 100K miles on it already. When my son turned 16 we gave it to him. It turned out that the insurance was THROUGH THE ROOF. When I called to complain, the insurance company said "there are thousands upon thousands of Mazda 3s on the road, they are mostly driven by young people, and they are in accidents ALL THE TIME". Turns out, the Civic, the Golf, the Mazda 3, and the Corolla are super expensive to insure with young drivers because they are all being driven by millennials who are driving down the road texting and starting at SnapChat stories instead of looking at the road. So, the opposite situation that Nick finds himself in.

Nice video, thank you! FWIW my first car was a (heavily) used ‘79 Ford Cortina Ghia, 2.0l, 3 speed auto, that leaked so much oil my father made me park it down the street. It was white with a black vinyl roof, rear window louvre, and a pop up sunroof with a big eagle sticker on it. But that’s not the best part. The best part was that the previous owner had fitted musical air horns.

About the insurance issue, I had a similar experience with another sports car. When I looked into it, the car wasn't classified as a high risk car by the insurance company. Instead, it was listed as a luxury car. My previous car was listed as a high risk car, and even though it was slower and less expensive the insurance was nearly double.

I work as an home and auto insurance agent and I study actuarial sciences. I can confirm that expensive cars are often cheap to insure. Usually their owners don't drive all that much and are worried about their cars a lot, unlike your average everyday car which you probably won't care for as much. However, if the owner is younger and has any single blemish on his record, he will typically pay (a lot) more. Also a good credit rating helps your insurance pricing a lot because statistically, there is a huge correlation between credit scores and the number of accidents people get into. The logic behind it is likely that people who are responsible with their payments are also responsible in life in general (and therefore with their cars).

Hello Nick, I have a 2000 911. My insurance with full coverage is $175.00 a year. So let me explain why its so low. 1) The car is insured with a collector car insurance company with "Agreed Value " coverage. 2) I have 5 other cars. so not a daily use car. 3) Car is garaged 4) I can not drive it to work. Not an issue for me since I am retired. FYI, I was considering buying a new 2015-16 Chrysler 300. The insurance for that car would have been over $600.00 a year. You are correct its all a mathematical equation. Subaru's Mustangs etc are way more expensive to insure because of the amount of claims, age and driving records of those owners.

When the 991.2 was launched I initially thought I'd made a mistake, but on noise alone comparing mine with yours I'm pleased I followed my heart. The noise in the video sounds good, but so liner across the rev range. I can virtually play a tune with the 991.1! I plan to take a 991.2 out for a drive soon so I'll have a more informed view. Keep up the great work, regards Montcoffer

Glad to see you are getting low mpg. It means you're doing it right. Well done.

I have a 991.1 convertible in Switzerland and full insurance costs me a whopping 3500,- CHF (similar in US $). Despite good track record and credits, low theft risk, low risk for accidents, etc... .You're lucky Nick!

You should make a video when you take your car in for the next service. Maybe ask them to put the car on a lift and show some of the technical aspects of the 911.

No wonder you've got such a bad milage...driving with 3000rpm is not necessary anymore with the new turbo engines. The small arrow facing upwards indicates that you can shift up in the next gear. As always a great video. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

17,8 mpg?? If my calculations are correct, that's only 13 l/100km!! I think that's nothing for a car like that, especially if you've been driving like that on low gears, flooring it, etc.. On my 993 tt, I get an average of 18 l/100km, and that's on a mixed use (highway and city). I know, it's 20 years difference, but still very good mileage imo. Btw, great work on the channel!! Keep it up Nick!

its the right thing to buy what you makes you happy. In case you cannot afford it dont take similar and cheaper. It is not the same and cant substitute the one you want. Even you can feel worse after that. Better collect the money until you have all and then go ahead.

I changed the battery in my E-46 BMW the other day. Take the battery out of the trunk, close the trunk, go to get the new battery. Come back and realize, the truck is an electronic lock....and there is no power in the car at all. Good thing the car was unlocked, and I have fold down rear seats.

Interesting comment on insurance. My 2013 991.1 is actually a bit less than the car that preceded it, a Subaru Baja turbo - I'm at about $1000/year with full coverage, $500 deductible. The Subaru was around $1100 with the same coverage. State Farm. I'm in a metro area, though, and I'm sure that makes it a bit more.

Cam Walker I have the same experience. The insurance for my 2013 991.1 4S is 1/3 what I paid for my BMW 335i for the same coverage.

Great to see you enjoying your 911 even with all the snow CT has gotten lately. Very very frustrating with the garage door. Looking good Nick. Have fun and drive safe. (Mike in Ohio)

Hi Nick, as you might remember I'm the UK chap who also took delivery of a Jan 2017 991.2 with mine being the Carrera 2 for the same reasons as you stated, plus UK roads are so crowded! Some feedback for you from you video today. Going from my last Porsche to the new one I've found with the HomeLink gate and garage door opening etc. you have to annoyingly hold the button in for what seems an age but for sure 2 seconds for it to work. It's noticeable as your pushing a button up which is tiresome! So worth a try. As for the options in the multifunction display, why have a 911 which all the beautiful analogue gauges (oil, water etc!) to then repeat the data digitally? I have programmed mine for additional useful data such as sat nav, fuel range (top line is speed limit on my car) and altitude believe it or not. I'm amazed that people don't bother to changes these. Clearly I've kept boost. Finally, with voice command issue have you tried it without the Apple Car play on as that's Siri! Without ACP it's the Porsche voice command which is better. I've had both working on mine, but I've given up on Siri as it's annoying compared to the Porsche voice system. Worth a try. Regards, Rory

I think a lot of people are quick to dismiss the manual transmission, as most people haven't driven a manual transmission Porsche they are on a different level than your mustang GT or corvette, truly sweet shifting cars that were designed properly. No need to buy a short shifter that makes your shifts too heavy or notchy.

Dont forget the big advantage of the C4 models, as they are wider and have the beautiful light bar :) HomeLink was a big problem on my Boxster Spyder as the signal is really weak. But I have fixed it with a signal booster you install in your garage. It cost 50€ and works so amazing. I can give you a link if you want? You can open your garage from like a kilometer away :D

I can confirm the low insurance costs with Porsches. I’m living in Germany and purchased a 718 Cayman S. The insurance costs about 900€/year. For my old VW Caddy from 2009 in contrast it is 1400€/year. Weird, but true.

Leather can be fixed easily. Software update should fix it. It's receiving the command from the stalk button, so it's not electrical. Garage door- check all sensors on car/garage sensor. If that's fine try power cycling the car and try again. That's all I can think of. I also agree on the C4/C2S being the best option for street use for that reason. Miata logic. That said, you'll easily pull away from the odd C2S that pops up now and again. :)

I had the same conversation with my insurance company on my Boxster. I went from $180/month on a Honda S2000 to $90/month on the Boxster and assumed there had been a mistake. According to my agent: "Too many teenager idiots have wrapped S2000s around trees. People don't wreck their Porsches." He said that the frequency of accidents in a given model is actually a far higher determinant of insurance premiums than overall value of the vehicle. It's likely a good thing that I saved some money on something. My third year of ownership of my Boxster was a $10,000 maintenance year.

Agree on the insurance, Nick. I'm in the UK and my 997 C4S costs significantly less to insure than the Mini and XC90 I also run.

Your Homelink issue might be more related to the openers themselves rather than the car transmitter. I'm imagine Porsche installed the most up-to-date version of Homelink in the car, but the garage door openers may not be completely compatible with it. I know that for my Liftmaster unit, I had to get a bridge for the buttons to work consistently. Thanks for the videos, Nick!

Nick - try holding the home link button down a little longer top open the garage doors. Pressing and holding the button allows for more time for the homeland system to cycle through the codes. Most garage door openers have rotating or rolling codes. This may account for why it seems to work sometimes and not others - you may have caught it early in the rolling cycle. Just my 2 cents.
