awesome video, i had same exact 225dx yellow trike back in '84, got mine brand new when I was 13, rode that thing everywhere & even got some lovin on mine in the woods with teen bimbos lol as well as outran the cops many times into the woods on it. wheelie machine supreme, tons of low end torque

My first and only 3 wheeler. I had the yellow and my brother had the blue. God I loved to ride that thing. Those were definitely the good old days.

This was frustrating to watch for myself.. I have owned 3 of this model Yamaha.. my only complaint was the suspension is junk... With a Cobra pipe and wooly bogger tires.. the bike ran strong.. most people don't know how to ride 3 wheelers... Even know how to get one on a truck easily without ramps... But thanks for sharing this post... best wishes with the bike.. I got to big to ride the bike here.. currently I ride XR 650.. but thanks again for sharing.. Robert Jr NJ here

Got nervous when you were loading and unloading it. I was unloading a old (so it was very heavy) International Cub Cadet lawn mower and the boards slipped off the truck. Threw me to the ground on my back and knocked all the breath out of me. All I see is this thing backing up still running with the front wheels straight up and thinking it's going to fall backwards on me and the steering wheel is going to crush my chest. Thank God it cut off and fell forward breaking the front axle.

I had a 225 dx 1985. Great little 3wheeler.

Man does that wheeler ever bring back memories. Like the time I had my leg wrapped around the back axle. All kidding aside I did have a lot of fun with my big red plus I still walk with a limp and everytime it rains the memories come flooding back...

loading/unloading, throw the from wheel on the tailgate, grab it from the back and shove it in there, ramps a waste of time.

Good memories. I used to have that same 225DX over 30 years ago and had a ton of fun on it, before upgrading to an ATC 250R. On a side note the exhaust on that BMW is laughably ridiculous.

This used to be my absolute favorite atc of all time. I used to pull the whole triple clamp off a scrap 250r or something lile that. It added the a little groumd clearance, and gave way way better suspension. And wheels where effortlessly!

I have an 81 ATC 250R, Love it, absolute blast to ride and anything you ride at a high rate of speed is dangerous. I been riding it for over 10 years and the only thing I have ever rolled was my Dads Kawasaki Bruteforce 750 V-twin four wheeler / quad. So, are they more dangerous opinions very. They where out law because parents where not teaching their kids how to properly ride them. I want to add something so that people know, they are not out law to ride just for dealers to sell. My Dad bought this one in 86 from a guy that raced them I mean ATC's witch stands for (All Terrain Cycles). I have done my research on them. They are dangerous for inexperienced rider's that don't know how to lean and use their weight to kick out the back tires around corners. So what happens, is someone riding one leans the wrong way the bike start to turn over and they make a big mistake they take their foot off the peg and the back tire runs up the back of their leg and drags them right off the bike. Wear a helmet, learn to lean correctly, and don't ever take your feet off the pegs, and let the blast begin. I love the video's man I watched and liked all of them, and you did a great Job fixing up that bike and I want to say thank you for keeping three wheelers alive. Sorry about the rant, I just really like the three wheeler world. They are really amazing machines once you get comfortable enough to really ride them to their full potential! Id check your timing chain those tend to get stretched over time and make the noise it's making.

I had a friend of mine that had a brand new 225 DX in 1985 it was bad ass I had a1985 Kawasaki KLT 250 three wheeler we raced all the time a lot of fun

Dont worry, ive taken the same 3 wheeler through 2-3 feet of snow. Go in 2nd to 3rd gear, when you start slowing down pull on the handle bars and do a wheele to pick up speed, works on the 250 yamaha and the big red 3 wheelers.

Another easy way to load is wheelie to 12 o'clock position. Push to the bed of your truck. Let front tire rest on tailgate and grab rear bar lift and push. It's a little safer. Gr8 content buddy. Keep it up.

Yes they have automatic timing chain tensioner but they still have to be adjusted occasionally my ytm 200 has the same ticking and I believe it’s piston slap because I’ve adjusted the valves and I’ve set the timing chain tension

Get a set of the old Stryker treads in 25-12 and put them on with the V bars pointing to the rear and air them down a little. Then put a more aggressive tread on the front like a Blackwater or a Viper tread and she'll do pretty good in the snow. Thanks for the ride! I put many many miles on my Honda 185S and 250 Big Red back in the day!

I believe this is the same motor that the 225 4 wheelers from that same time frame had and it definitely sounds like you have a loose cam chain to me based on the Quads with that motor that I worked on.

There is nothing wrong with 3 wheelers, people just needed to learn to ride them, I started with the old Honda 110, the 185, 185s, the Big Red 200, the Yamaha 125 and 175 tri motos and the 225, then eventually in 1988 I bought the first 250R in Minnesota that had the red plastic, what a machine it was and still is.

The tires on the rear are the worst you can/could buy for the snow, need a simple dimpled knobby.

I had a blue ‘85 225 dx, the next year they gave it reverse. Lived in Tahoe and was in the snow all the time. We used it or pull snow sleds. Those woolly Booger tires are horrible for snow traction, my buddy had them on his Honda 200x and got stuck in the snow all the time

You could definitely have a loose cam chain do a little research to see if there is a way to adjust it. It could save your valves. lol

I got one of those. Been riding 3wheelers since the late 80s. Screw quads. 3wheelers all the way.

If ya don't like the 1 front wheel you can do what Yamaha did with the MOTO 4. Take an existing 3 wheeler and weld a 4 wheeler front frame section fast to it.

Air down the tires that should help and a set of chains on the back tires that's what I used to do and it helps a lot thanks for the videos and good luck

I had a Honda ATC 200X back in the day and you are correct about 3wheelers being death traps. Steep, rutted out downhills would make you shit your pants on that thing.

Next time lower the tire pressure and with them big ol fat tires itll help with traction and help you float more ontop of the snow

they banned them but people that got hurt or died on them didnt respect them and operate them as designed.they couldnt blame their dead kids, or themselves as parents so they had to blame the machine. like anything else, common sense is key. they were not meant to be raced and jumped at high speeds, specially the early models. they were meant to be reliable and utilitarian. All terrain cycle (ATC) that was cheap on fuel, could haul a person and small amount of gear, handle muddy terrain, and could even be floated across mild rivers and streams. the more folks used them on ranches, farms, hunting,camping and such the more Utility got designed into them. ive used many makes and models over a few decades, ive had more injuries from bicycles as a kid in the 70's then i did from ATC's or quads.
