Hi-Five was a great group that came up in the right time in R&B and New Jack Swing. I think you should try and review another overlooked group called Intro. Kenney Greene was a super talented singer for that group. Sadly, he passed away.
A very royal crowning reaction 👑! I see 👁👁 that you have reacted to Hi Five before: Just Can't Handle It, Never Should Have Let You Go, I Like The Way (The Kissing Game), Unconditional Love and I Can't Wait Another Minute. She's Playing Hard To Get was released as the lead single from Hi Five's 1992 album: Keep It Goin' On. It was written by Timmy Allen and William Walton. It was produced by Timmy Allen. The song reached #2 on the R&B chart, #5 on the Hot 100 and #35 on the Dance chart. The music video was directed by Lionel C Martin. Group member Russell Neal wasn't in the music video because he had left the group due to money issues right before the music video was filmed. Only four group members: Tony Thompson, Roderick 'Pooh' Clark, Marcus Sanders and Treston Irby, are in the music video. The other guy dancing in the music video is the music video's choreographer Darrin Henson. Hi Five Info 📰: Hi Five was formed in Waco, Texas in 1989. The group consisted of founding and original members: Tony Thompson (lead singer), Roderick 'Pooh' Clark, Marcus Sanders, Russell Neal and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma native Toriano Easley (co-lead singer). The group has performed on Soul Train, It's Showtime At The Apollo and The Arsenio Hall Show. Over the group's career they have endured a few line-up changes as members came and went from the group due to various reasons. In 1990 Toriano Easley was charged with murder/manslaughter in Oklahoma right after the music video for Just Can't Handle It was released and replaced in the group by New York native Treston Irby. In 1993 Terrence Murphy and Shannon Gill relaced Russell Neal (who left over monetary related reasons) and Roderick 'Pooh' Clark (who was paralyzed from the neck down in a 1993 auto accident). Hi Five was originally signed to *Jive Records in late 1989 and released their eponymous debut album in 1990. *Hi-Five was actually signed to a production deal through their management just like New Edition, TLC and many other past groups/artists. A production deal is basically legalized slavery where the managers get to touch the group's money before they do and give them an allowance while they pocket most of the money for themselves. Hi Five's debut album was in large part produced by Teddy Riley and went platinum. It included singles "I Just Can't Handle It" (R&B No. 3), "I Can't Wait Another Minute" (Pop No. 8, R&B No.1) and "I Like The Way (The Kissing Game)", which went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart making it their biggest hit to date. The group's second album: Keep It Goin' On, was released in 1992. Though not as successful as their debut effort, several tracks from this album, including "She's Playing Hard To Get" (Pop No. 5, R&B No. 2) and the R. Kelly-penned "Quality Time" (Pop No. 38, R&B No. 3) got major airplay in urban radio markets. Shortly after this album was released, the group was involved in a vehicular accident while on an East Coast promotional tour, which left group member Roderick 'Pooh' Clark paralyzed from the chest down while the rest of the group escape the accident largely uninjured. In 1993, Hi-Five emerged with a third album: Faithful, which featured the songs "Unconditional Love" (Pop No. 92, R&B No. 21) and "Never Should've Let You Go" (Pop No. 30, R&B No. 10). "Unconditional Love" was also featured in the multi-platinum Menace II Society soundtrack, and received extensive airplay on urban contemporary stations throughout the summer of 1993 as the movie increased in popularity. More of Hi Five's music was featured on some popular movie soundtracks as well including 📽: Too Young (Boyz N The Hood), Fly Away (Menace II Society), U Turn Me On (The Meteor Man), Never Should Have Let You Go (Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit) & That Was Then This Is Now (Losing Isaiah). After Hi Five disbanded sometime during 1994 Tony Thompson released a solo album: Sexsational, in 1995 on Giant Records. He scored a minor hit with "I Wanna Love Like That" (Pop No. 59, R&B No. 17) which a music video was shot for the sing. A second single, Handle Our Business, was released and had a music video shot for it as well. The album, which is a really good listen, has an all star production cast behind it including: Teddy Riley, Al B Sure, Dave Hollister, Babyface, Missy Elliott, DeVante Swing, Mary J Blige, Faith Evans and Joe. In 2012, Hi Five released the album: Legacy, on Treston Irby's independent Bronx Most Wanted Entertainment record label. It included the songs: Favorite Girl, You Never Know, It's Nothing, Sunshine, Different Kiss, Christmas, Everything, This Love, Drop and Kit Kat. In 2014, TV One aired an Unsung episode on the group detailing all the notable events up to that time in their career. The video is on RU-vid. Marcus Sanders is the only original Hi Five group member that still performs live with the group in 2023. Hi Five still performs their music live on stage in 2023 with a group line-up consiting of: Marcus Sanders, Treston Irby, Shannon Gill, Billy Covington and Faruq Evans. Group Comebacks, Death's And Legal Issues 🪦👨🏾⚖: In 2005, Tony Thompson re-incarnated Hi Five with Deion Braxton, Darrell Payne Jordan Thompson, Terrence Murphy making up the group. Their new album: The Return, was released in 2006 on Tony Thompson's independent record label: N'Depth Records. But that group manifestation was short lived as former Hi Five members Treston Irby, Marcus Sanders and Russell Neal filed a cease and desist trademark lawsuit against Tony Thompson using the group's name which was eventually dropped but the damage was done as Tony Thompson's revised incarnation of Hi Five stalled out due to the lawsuit. Sometime in 2007, after that lawsuit was dropped, Tony Thompson sat down with Treston Irby and Marcus Sanders and agreed to bring back the group including those former group members. Unfortunately on June 1, 2007 Tony Thompson's body was discovered by security officers at around 10 pm near an air-conditioning unit outside of an apartment complex where he was living in his native Waco, Texas. An autopsy later determined that he had passed away due to the "toxic effects of chlorodifluoromethane," or inhaling a toxic amount of freon. On June 10, 2010 a special ceremony was held for Tony Thompson's grave site headstone installation. Tony Thompson 🙏🏽 is buried at Doris Miller Memorial Park in Waco, Texas. In 2009, Treston Irby was shot 5 times during an attempted robbery while leaving a New Haven, Connecticut night club. This incident led him to re-forming Hi Five and continuing on in the music industry recording new music and performing live on stage with Hi Five. In July of 2014, Russell Neal was charged with murdering his wife Catherine Martinez in their Houston, Texas home. He turned himself into police immediately after the fact. he was deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial in 2017 but has remained locked up at Rusk State Hospital, a mental institution, ever since. There is no new information on his current legal status to stand trial as of this posting. On April 17, 2022, original group member Roderick 'Pooh' Clark 🙏🏽 passed away from complications from an infection and pneumonia. According to Marcus Sanders, Roderick 'Pooh' Clark had developed an infection that spread throughout his body- one that persisted for some time. He also developed pneumonia over the last 2 weeks of his life in part from being in and out of the hospital until his passing. A video of his funeral is on RU-vid.
