When my husband sees the official video for this song he throws his arms up and says "YES! I'M IN THAT CROWD......somewhere!" lol The list of legendary bands that he saw during the '80s always makes me green with envy.
This is my favorite Journey song at 67 still gives me goosebumps. Up next should be Mother Father same concert the vocal acrobatics are incredible. Journey is one of the few bands that sound better live Thank you ❤❤❤❤
You need to listen to Who's crying now? And Send her my Love, Ask the Lonely. Girl can't help it. And Separate Ways they will make you feel never the same again! Love your site from a 66 year old Nana
This song is the greatest slow, love songs of all time. I remember dancing to this in junior high prom, with my girlfriend. We had our first kiss to this, and thats a memory I will never forget.
I saw them twice and it was a really good time. That said, imagine being at a SF Giants game and they always play the song "Lights" about his city by the bay., then a gen Z realizes he's standing next to the man that's on the recording belting it out right nest to ya
Steve Perry was one of the best rock singers of all time ! With that being said, the young man from the Philippines that sings for Journey now does a helluva job too !! If you get a chance to see Journey live, do it as they are touring as we speak and you get Def Leppard too !!👍👍
You're right, he just lets it go. That's why it sounds so good: he opens his throat and it flows out rather than pushing or straining. This song has a real problem: it's too short. But it was their highest charting single. My current Steve Perry obsession is "Patiently" from the 1979 live in Chicago, Comisky Park concert. Insane!
Patty-I think you should catch the Tokyo version. The dude was sick with the flu. He could barely stand and hit every note in Open Arms. This is why they call him the VOICE.
My best friend and I always sang this song as a duet in choir class on Fridays. She passed away in May 1992 at the age of 13 (I was 14). So this song reminds me of my dear friend.
What a beautiful memory for you! I’m so sorry for the loss of your friend at such a young age- when we are so vulnerable and impressionable. I hope you have had a wonderful life thus far xxx
@jolezius326 I have a good life since losing my best friend. I became a probation officer and then a law enforcement officer. Raised my daughter and she's an EMT. And I also have great friends. I think about my friend a lot.
This entire album is fire 🔥. You need to hear the song 🎧 MOTHER FATHER🎵. It’s about Divorce, pull up the words. It’s probably his best vocal performance ever… his voice is one of the instruments. Watch live in Houston. Solo at the end by keyboardist 🎹 Jonathan Cain.
This is the first song I actually watched the official video. Obviously when it came out that really got me into journey, not the first song of theirs. I'd heard the first song of theirs I had heard. I can't remember the name. Anyhow, it was in the movie caddyshack blaring out the golf bag from Rodney Dangerfield's clubs. I can't believe I am not remembering what it is right off him. Sorry I'm half asleep. Anyhow, that was probably the first song I heard and I didn't know it was them but open arms was the first song that spoke to me so to speak cuz back then in the '80s and the '70s I still believed in well. I still believe in it now but I know it's far and few and between of the love that is always spoken about in these songs. You know all the love songs from the '80s and stuff like that and the movies. You know the awkward guy you know finally gets the love that he wants s or deserves with the exception of the last American Virgin which which pissed me off at the end because of my beliefs. But anyhow, your journey has a lot of great songs. I even loved playing the arcade game cuz it had the music
Journey and Steve Perry are the rare instance that sound better live, actually, rather than in studio. I wish they would have released a live album along side the actual album with each new release. ❤
I've said this so many times before. Four of the greatest ballads ever created were made by 2 rock bands at around the same time. Journey with 'Faithfully' and 'Open Arms' and Foreigner with 'Waiting for a Girl Like You' and 'I Want to Know What Love Is'. Both bands fronted by arguably the greatest singers in rock history. Love your appreciation of this classic song, Shon.
I'm sorry, but I fully disagree with your choice of Foreigner being nowhere, even close to Steve's vocals and talent during this era of music! I would easily replace Foreigner with two other singers with a HELLAVA a lot better bands, ONE, Def Leppard, and the other??? REO SPEEDWAGON, AND I JUST CAN'T LEAVE OUT, JOHN COUGAR MELLENCAMP!!!
@@rhondamcbath6279 Oh man... John Cougar Mellencamp has a BETTER voice that Lou Gramm??? BWAHAAAAAAAA... stop it. Lou Gramm is better than all of the lead singers in those bands. Hands down. Steve is the undisputed king... but there are many, many people out there that are amazed by Lou's fantastic voice. I've NEVER heard anyone say that about John Cougar's voice. Ever.
I definitely think this one is better than Faithfully, it's a more powerful arrangement (more of a power ballad than Faithfully) and I connect to it on a deeper level because it literally describes me and my boyfriend. When we got back together we made this our song because it's just so beautiful and moving, the first couple times I listened to this after we got back together I sobbed and I still cry when I hear it sometimes. I definitely want it to play at our wedding :)
Two of the greatest singers of all time in my opinion would be Steve Perry and Sam Cooke! Listen to Sam then Steve, you'll see what I mean. There are so many great singers of the last 75 years but these two our in my top 10 and closer to the top 5.
This is the song that my then girlfriend and i fell in love to back in 1982, she has been my wife for the past 3 years now...never forget your first love...
You should listen to "clap for the Wolfman" by the Guess Who. It's a tribute to an old DJ who had the nickname Wolfman Jack. They use some of his voice recordings in the song. You sound a lot like Wolfman Jack to me.
I saw Journey live in 1985.. Steve Perry and the entire band sounds better live. In those days you had to have actual talent. There wasn't no such thing as Auto-Tune. But doesn't need it anyway.
