I have to say, here, that "Fancy" was written and first recorded by Bobbie Gentry, the Queen of Story Songs, in 1969. It was scandalous! and we loved it. Reba does a fantastic job.

Love Bobbie Gentry. Always amazed by young people that didn’t hear Bobbie on the radio. I am 69 years old southern lady. I harvest collards, all greens and homemade biscuits.

You should definitely check out the Bobbie Gentry episode of the podcast “Cocaine and Rhinestones”. It’s SO good with lots of obscure music clips of hers, lots of details about her life that aren’t well known. Any fan of hers will LOVE it.

I love the story in this song. You would expect a song, especially a country song, about a girl being thrown out of her house and forced into prostitution to survive to try to shame the girl, or to have her be ashamed to tell the story, but this song doesn't. She tells the story very matter-of-factly, then says that she refuses to be ashamed of it because she survived, and she made something of herself, and it never would have happened any other way. It's both tragic and empowering, and while it wasn't originally Reba's song, she was the voice it needed.

I consider myself country although born in Detroit, I have lived close to 30 yrs or more down south my husband southern and daughter . I’m not being mean but I find it insulting saying you expect this out of a country song !!!! Really !!!!! So I assume all the profanity in rap is ok ?
@anitaslack9193
@anitaslack9193 Год назад
Why on earth would you be insulted that I've come to expect a certain degree of conservative holier-than-thou-ism from country music after 40 years of exposure to it? Did you write those country songs that made me feel that way? And what the heck does rap have to do with any of it?
@billparrish4385
@billparrish4385 Год назад
Tragic and empowering is the perfect pairing to describe this story. There were no doubt other options open to Fancy, but neither her mother's desperation nor her own inexperience and tender years were able to supply those answers. So this was the place where those circumstances had put her, but it was not where she stayed. Her determination made the best of a miserable situation, and she willed herself out of it. And per the sign at the end of the video (though not a part of the song's story), she's giving back so that other girls in that situation will have opportunities she never had. A bleak scenario, transformed into triumphing over the odds. Tremendous song!

This song always makes me think of my grandmother (RIP). She was born in south Alabama in 1915. In 1928, she was 13 years old, it was the beginning of the great depression. She was already born into a poor family so at 13 she was married off to a 33 year old man. Things like that was common a while back, sad but it was surviving! Great reaction to a great song!

The next awesome storytelling one you must do is The Night That the Lights Went Out in Georgia. It's a cover - but storytelling at it's very best. Reba is just the queen. Fancy is also another cover - but not based on Reba's life. I'll Be, Why Haven't I Heard from You, and The Heart Won't Lie (duet with Vince Gill) are some of my favourites. Have fun going down the rabbit hole. Cheers from Canada :)

My moms mother died when she was 13. When she married my dad, she took 3 younger brothers and sisters with her. I was her youngest of 8 kids. When I got married, the minister asked her how it would be , to be alone again. She said she never was alone. First time I heard of how her life was. Drunk dad, dead mom, and 7 kids later , ....me. She never got rich or had what the song says fancy had, but she was great. Taught us what love can do, with or without money.

The time period in this music video, that young Fancy grew up in, was The Great Depression. So many people were desperate & starving, & a lot of them were homeless. When people get into desperate situations, they do desperate things. It was just what life was like back then. By the way, check out Reba's song titled, "His Name Was John". It is another hard to hear song, but it's worth it. 👍

Reba Mcentire is from Oklahoma like Garth Brooks. Not Louisiana in the song. She didn't write it but nobody sings like her. I have been to a few of her concerts over the years and watch out for the multiple wardrobe changes throughout her concerts. Reba's stepson Brandon Stockwell was married to Kelly Clarkson and was her manager. Then Covid hit and spending time in quarantine in a small cabin forced them to realize they had different dreams. Kelly's children will always be Reba's grandkids. Watch Kelly sing on the Grand Finale of American Idol on Fox. She sings a very personal song about growing up without her father and she is determined to be there for her kids. She was still with Brandon then with one child and 8 months pregnant with her second during her performance. Not a dry eye in the house. Reba is very close to Brooks and Ronnie Dunn as they were the driving force behind rebuilding Nashville after the flood.

Yeah, that performance of Kelly's was something---it was all Keith Urban, in particular, could do to keep from out-and-out bawling.

It is not based on Reba's life. Reba comes from a very loving family and while I don't think they are exactly rich; I believe they are very comfortable. Reba was raised in and around rodeos and both her father and grandfather were world champion steer ropers. Reba herself was a barrel racer. She studied to be a teacher, but I think she headed to Nashville to pursue a career in music before she ever actually taught school. My favorite song by Reba is "Somebody Should Leave".

Yeah, this song is a bit bittersweet and intense, though you’ve gotta be a powerhouse to do it justice. If you get a chance to see Kelly Clarkson do it to honor Reba at the Kennedy Center, that’s impressive, too. Reba is a whole can of worms to open as she’s got an amazing catalogue. My recommendations for her tend to follow my moods. You should see her “duet” with Brooks and Dunn If You See Him/Her. Also, Take It Back is fun. Her soulful side comes out with Sunday Kind of Love and If I Had Only Known… Her empowerment songs like For Herself and Ride Cowgirl, Ride are terrific. And don’t even get me started on her heartbreak love songs because we could be here all day.

Here's Kelly.... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qdy6b9JgCb8.html She's another one who could sing the phonebook and I'd be happy!! Reba was her mother-in-law, at one point---then there were all these sad divorces.... Reba says she'll always love Kelly, and her kids will always be her grandchildren, though. Poor Reba is afraid of heights, and she had to be up there in that box!! That black guy in the audience---bless his heart; such a face---he was like "This is NOT a good song"!!! LOL

Just to let you know that NO, this song wasn't about Reba's life. Reba was raised tough. They had a ranch and she worked hard and of course, the family wasn't rich by any means. Reba did a lot of horse barrel racing and was discovered while singing the American National Anthem at one of the horse rodeo/barrel events. Here's the link if you want to see young Reba singing it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iF2hj2kND68.html This was shown at a tribute to Reba on her award at the CMT Giants, where many singers, including Dolly Parton gave tribute. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w_8Uyo-tytg.html Enjoy! That being said, as a mom of 4, would I do this to my daughter? Not just no, but HELL NO! Nope, no way, nah huh, not even a thought of “is this the only way?” No no no. Ok, well now I feel better 😁😁

This is my favorite Reba song. Ya just have to realize that this was set in the time of rich plantation owners in the deep South. Her Mom just wanted to know that she set her beautiful young daughter on a path to success. The reason the cab ride is included is to give question to just how that success was achieved. Did she become a "Lady of the night", or did she meet the right people that took her to Hollywood for a successful acting career. That's left to individual interpretation.

I think everyone has to realize what is going on the first time they hear this song so don't feel alone on that. One thing it took me a long time to pick up on was the first line of the song is key when she says. "The summer I turned eighteen." Her mom was sick and dying and she knew the baby would be taken care of by the system but Fancy was of age. So she did they only thing she knew to make sure Fancy survived. And I agree with a lot of other comments. If you like this one you have to do. "The Night the Lights went out in Georgia" next."

"Wicked left turn" is an apt description! Never would have thought her mother would turn her out to be a prostitute. Said she was sending her "uptown" in that red dress. In case you don't know, areas where prostitutes work in the US (not sure about the UK) are known as "red light districts". At any rate, fantastic song (written by Bobby Gentry, another country legend, you'll remember her from Ode to Billy Jo. A fantastic performance by Reba. Fancy met some high class men so she really did end up "uptown".

The ultimate "Fancy" was Empress Theodora, who started out as a strpper.

I love watching your reactions to country music. I am from Arkansas in the south of the USA. There is simply no where more wonderful than living in the south. I suggest you check out Tracy Byrd’s Watermelon Crawl. Such a great depiction of everyday life in a southern town. I will keep watching. Best of luck.

The original by Bobby Gentry was incredible. Bobby Gentry is still missing after all these years no one's no one's been able to find her. And also another good song is to knock the lights went out in Georgia by Vicki Lawrence.

This song was written and recorded by Bobbie Gentry in 1969. The girl, Fancy, is 18 and not the "young child" portrayed in Reba's video.

You should check out on of her fun ones so that you can see her sense of humour. Try “Why Haven’t I Heard from You.”

Guess you may have already seen & heard Reba and Dolly singing "Do you love me." It's fantastic imho. Reba does things with her voice like Elvis did. I've long been a fan of Dolly's song writing, and I've never heard her to do better vocally than the duet with Reba.
