He is referencing martyrs like MLK and Jesus. People who were killed because they led with love, fought without violence, and died in pursuit of equality. The one big mistake was saying King died in the "early morning, April 4". He actually was shot in the early evening and Bono does sing it correctly live in concert
@coffeeveins

I often wondered if the discrepancy in the lyrics was from when the news first broke/was announced in the UK versus when it occurred where it happened in the USA because of the time zone difference.

@tonycasey3183
@tonycasey3183 Год назад
Yes, it's a tribute to MLK but it's a song about non-violent resistance according to the band. In the first verse it talks about the different types of leaders we have. Then a man dies on a barbed wire fence - an allusion to the first world war, to which "one man he resists" ie the conscientious objectors to that war, many of whom were shot for cowardice. The second world war is referenced in the line about dying on a beach - see the Normandy invasions. Then the Jesus line about Judas's betrayal with a kiss and JCs refusal to resist arrest and execution. Verse three is the MLK verse which takes poetic licence with the time of day the assassination took place, but it works better aesthetically. All these people had pride in their beliefs instead of arrogance. They are very cool lyrics.
@jedislap8726

MY LETTER TO U2-1987 I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono! I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage! I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations. Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year! All the Best! Gary Lagstrom

Crazy that Bono was only 24 here…what a powerful and mature voice! Like a man who had lived lifetimes already. The rest of the guys really compliment it so well. Absolutely, was going to comment the same, but you did it for me! The rhythm section is just awesome in this. And the production allows this, The Edge's soundscapes aren't allowed to overshadow anything, everything has a strong place in the mix - which makes for an explosive listen. U2 never sounded better than here, in my opinion.

“Pride” is a Tribute, to the late Martin Luther King Jr. “MLK.” The final verse of “Pride” says, Early morning, April 4 / Shot rings out in the Memphis sky / Free at last, they took your life / They could not take your pride. On April 4, 1968, King was fatally shot in Memphis, Tennessee on a motel balcony. In the song, Bono incorrectly sings early morning when the shooting actually took place at 6:01 p.m.

The entire song is a tribute to martyrs, from Jesus to a soldier on a barbed wire fence during a war, to being washed up on the beach on D-Day, and even being betrayed with a kiss. This is definitely a song where you should have looked at the lyrics, at the least after the video when you expressed not really understanding what was being said. There's a reason so many requested this song, and it's because it's a powerful song and really what has made U2 to be considered a thoughtful and maybe even somewhat political group. Many do recognize the significance of the date mentioned, MLK's assassination. I guess maybe it could be interpreted as ballad, but it's not a ballad to romantic love but rather the love of those who sacrificed their lives for the good of humankind.

Lots to explore with U2. Socially conscious band with meaningful lyrics that you need to explore. Bono has a lot of range. It’s so funny to hear someone say they have never heard bono sing like this, because he has been singing like this for decades on a massive global stage. This song has an easy and clear MLK reference. As they are Irish, they sing about the troubles as well.

I never thought he was screaming. I have loved this band in every era. His voice did soften in the 90's. That doesn't mean he couldn't use that power when he wanted and I never meant to suggest that it did, but he had far more control over the softer tones as he aged. He even said himself that something started to happen to his voice that they didn't expect, but they wanted it. The ability to "sing like a girl" as he said (I took this to mean his falsetto), which is something every male singer wants according to him. :) @@MBeano

This song is from U2's 3rd studio album, The Unforgettable Fire. It was their first big hit in the US. You should see their live set from Live Aid - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TJFg2h0MIb8.html - You'll see at one point Bono jumps down to the security area. He did so because from where he was standing, he could see, but security could not, that 3 women were in danger of being crushed by the crowd. It was at a point where he wasn't holding a mic, and security couldn't hear him, so he jumped down to tell them what he'd seen, and they were able to save the women. One was crying, and so Bono spun her into a dance to protect her privacy from the paparazzi until she could get herself together. The rest of the band just continued playing, not having any clue what he was doing, and they were pissed at him until they found out what had happened, later. At the time, all they knew was that they missed out on playing Pride, their hit song, because the extended version they did of the song they were on when he jumped down, Bad, took so long that their set time ran out. But their performance put them on the map for good; Queen's set at Live Aid was the best of the day, without question, but U2's was a very close second.

Unfortunately MLK was shot on my 1st birthday April 4 1968 so this song kinda hits me deep in the feels especially being a southern boy {Georgia DAWG} & what was going on here back then ✌💖☮

This song is about Jesus, MLK, Gandhi. It comes from the Unforgettable Fire album and is imo one of their best album. There's a song called MLK on it that you shlould listen and the title track is a gem.

Early U2. This is more raw than their later material. They all look so young.

U2 making Phil feel conflicted. Sounds about right for U2. 😂 They are very complex in their song meanings. One of my top 10 favorite bands of all time & believe me I place them in very good company. They even sing my favorite song of all time. You either love them or are indifferent to their music. I guess you go to the video everyone loves "Where The Streets Have No Name". They film in a "less than desirable" part of town on purpose as there are certain parts of the world where streets dont even have names. Do the people there even matter? But like a lot of U2 songs its a metaphor. Its by far one of their most complex songs musically (which The Edge wrote) and lyrically which Bono wrote. All that aside, its just straight fire. By the end of the song, you'll be singing along.

You would hear something special if you listened to a live take. Check out All I Want Is You / Streets with No Name combo out of Slane Castle. Concert took place just days after Bono's father died and to hear the emotion from his voice - it can really cut deep.

Great reaction as usual, but I'd definitely consider reading up a little on songs you're about to listen to just so you understand the deeper meaning behind some of the lyrics, especially with U2 songs.

Legendary song about Jesus and MLK. And, this was U2’s debut album! Very important fact with U2 … Their Lyrics!
