Freddie's voice is quite possibly the best male voice in history. He was pitch perfect, and could cover 4+ octaves without straining to get to the perimeters.

"You *BASTARDS!* How is ANYONE supposed to follow that?!" - Elton John, Live Aid 1985
@Sassypaws4927
@Sassypaws4927 Год назад
@@TheLastGarou Paul Gambaccini, who was part of the BBC broadcasting team at Live Aid, recalled the awe among other superstar musicians watching backstage. “Everybody realized that Queen was stealing the show,” said Gambaccini. In fact, the actual words that Elton John uttered when he rushed into Freddie’s trailer after the set was, “You bastards, you stole the show". “Queen smoked ’em. They just took everybody. They walked away being the greatest band you’d ever seen in your life, and it was unbelievable,” said David Grohl of Foo Fighters. “And that’s what made the band so great; that’s why they should be recognized as one of the greatest rock bands of all time because they could connect with an audience.”

You have to just sit down and catch their entire 1985 live aid performance. You can watch him take a tired and grumpy crowd and have them eating out of his hand within the first song. I don't think there has been a display of pure showmanship to come close to this since.

@chicochi3
@chicochi3 Год назад
In their earlier days, Queen didn't like the crowd singing because they had worked hard and the crowd was singing over them. Then Brian May thought, "Well, they're going to do it anyway. So let's give them their own songs to sing." Brian came up with "We Will Rock You" (I know you've heard that one) and Freddie came up with "We Are the Champions." For those of us that have been around for a while, these two songs go together. And they were written for the audience to sing along. So if you're doing "We Are the Champions" you have to do "We Will Rock You."
@BlastfromthePastCentury
@BlastfromthePastCentury Год назад
For me, "We Are the Champions" is always connected to "We Will Rock You." When Queen introduced the songs to us on the News of the World album, one song led into the other with no pause. Amazingly, "We Will Rock You" is as recognizable as "We Are the Champions." They are designed to go together, so you might give them a listen. One more Queen recommendations to you (already have a "Bohemian Rhapsody" recommendation pending from a prior post), give "Fat Bottomed Girls" a try!
@JeffMartinEquinox

This is kinda only true in the US. Because both songs were so short, DJs would play both in a row on the radio. I don't think this was generally done outside the US.

You can't go wrong with Queen and should check out the whole 20min Live-Aid performance, aka. "20 minutes that changed the world!". And as you heard "We are the champions" now ... the song they always played before this one was "We will rock you" and I am pretty sure you can "stomp-stomp-clap" and sing along immidieatly! If you haven't heard the studio version of "Bohemian Rhapsody" yet, you sadly missed the song which reaches number 1 three different decades! Queen have made chart history by becoming the first ever act to surpass seven million album sales! Do yourself a favour and buy the record "Queen - Greatest Hits". You can't go wrong with it! It is the best selling album of all time in the UK and contains "Bohemian Rhapsody" as opener, of course. If I am not mistaken, "BohRap" the second most selled song after Bing Crosby's "Whtie Christmas" of all time ... Give it a try! I am happy for you, that there is so much Queen songs out there for you to discover! There are "only" 53 official chart hits they put out during their time, but - in my and most opinion - most of their other songs (and hits) are even better! Not radio-play-style-songs, but incredible, solid work worth listening to!

Yes, the journey down the rabbit hole that is Queen is truly amazing. Just so sad that Freddie was taken from us at such a young age. So many Queen songs have been used in commercials, movie soundtracks and other places it would be hard to have never heard them. You just didn’t know it was Queen. Freddie composed music in so many genres including opera, and recorded a full opera album with the famous Spanish diva Montserrat Caballé. They have three great performances together on RU-vid titled “Barcelona”, “How Can I Go On” and “The Golden Boy”. The first fusion of rock and opera and the song Barcelona was a theme song for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Sadly Freddie passed away in 1991.

Another song you might notice the beat of, seeing how the bass beat was stolen by another artist (no spoiler here), is Under Pressure, the live version at Wembley Stadium is awesome, especially with the crowd participation. It was written with David Bowie and the beat created by John Deacon transcends time . . . . watch it and you will see.

I don't think they could guess the extent to which it was used. They noticed that fans would often sing along with them during their concerts...so Brian wrote We will Rock You as an audience participation song and Freddie then wrote this song for audience participation....could you pks, react LOVE OF MY LIFE, live at Wembley

Skip the individual reactions, and react to the whole Live Aid performance... about 20 minutes. Absolutely fantastic.

One of the greatest moments illustrating how legendary this band is, is a clip of an audience right before a performance of the British band Green Day and while waiting the speakers play Queen's classic "Bohemian Rhapsody" and spontaneously while the sun is breaking through, the whole audience starts singing along the whole song and knowing every word, some even mimicking the instrumental solos. It's magic and this was years after Freddy's death and it's llike he's there with the sun shining. I don't know, magic and unforgettable. Brian May's Guitar ( Red Special ) was made by Brian and his dad from an old fireplace mantel....just side note for ya ! the name of the band was taken from Freddie Mercury or Farrouk Bulsara, because he was a Queen.....

Freddie had a very sore throat when he did this live aid. Yes you know We will Rock you. Watch the Queen show at Live Aid and then imagine trying to be the musicians that had to follow this act!!!!

And if you want more Freddie, please check out "Barcelona"...there are many to choose from but the best is the actual performance at the 1992 Barcelona opening of their hosting of the 92 Olympics!

Jon Candy. I agree Freddie was the ULTIMATE showman. He was asked what instruments he played and he answered “a few but I play the audience the best” Genius

As a young soldier, my Pass Off (graduation) party/disco we went crazy to this newly released song, kind of fit the mood! ... shortly followed by Bony M and "Belfast". Funny dj.

I lived in Hawaii in late 70's and one of my memories is a ship coming back into port after being in some war games, blasting this from their loudspeaker.

He was literally singing for his life. He had been diagnosed with AIDS and would soon be dead. Watch the biopic Bohemian Rhapsody and watch Rami Malek portray this performance and you will see him win that Oscar in real time. Unbelievable tribute to Queen and Freddy.

Speaking to Freddy's passion. I have heard that, near the end of his life, Queen was still recording songs. Freddy was extremely skinny and frail and in excruciating pain. He would basically sit on a couch drinking to keep the pain at bay. Once when he was about to sing, they asked him if he felt good enough to do it. He looked at them, put the bottle down, and said "I will fucking nail it dahling." He then burst out an amazing verse in one take before sitting back down and grabbing the bottle for another drink. It was as if singing propelled him into another space where there was no pain. Also, he knew his life would be ending soon but he wanted to go out on his terms as best he could.

Normally this is played right after "we will rock you" which you'll know. You will probably also know "Another one bites the dust" As it's often played at sporting events.

Before that performance Freddie was told by his doctor he shouldn't sing because he had a throat infection but he did anyway so his voice wasn't 100% that day I was lucky enough to meet Queen in Melbourne in 75 it was their concert at Festival Hall

I remember when they did this concert it replayed on MTV for a long time. There were a lot of great bands who performed, but no one could top what Queen did. They were used to playing really large venues and Freddie Mercury had that whole crowd eating out of his hand. I never forgot that performance. The man had swagger coming out of every pore. My older brothers played some Queen at home when I was a kid, but I really fell for their music when I got into high school.

Ms Britt, please don't tell me you're only watching this one song from the Live Aid concert? Please, please, please you have to watch the entire set they played there to truly experience the magic of Queen's live performances. Once you go Queen/Freddie, you never go back!!

Freddie is just one of those singers, and those Queen songs will played and listened to 100 years from now. Legend is the only word I can think of.
