This was part of the soundtrack to Easy Rider in 1969. It became synonymous with open road motorcycling. Check out the movie if you never have. Monster is an awesome Steppenwolf jam also worth a listen. Great band. ✌️❤️🎶

I saw Easy Rider multiple times when it came out. Loved the soundtrack. Some say it was the first music video. They get no argument from me. 🖖❤

BTW, I don't know if you caught the line "Heavy Metal thunder" in this song, but it was the first time the term "Heavy Metal" was ever used. They literally created the name of a musical genre.

Yeah, Steppenwolf is a band from my childhood, I was born in the 60's and raised on the music of the 70's. There's plenty of hits and some not as well known greats like, "Ride With Me", "Who Needs Ya", "Move Over", "Snowblind Friend", "For Ladies Only", "Sookie Sookie", then the more familiar ones such as, "Born To Be Wild", "Rock Me", "Hey Lawdy Mama", "Magic Carpet Ride", "The Pusher" and "Jupiter's Child". LOVE Steppenwolf!! Hope you keep divin' in!

Steppenwolf was a Canadian-American rock band from 1968 to 1972. Their biggest hits were "Born To Be Wild", "Magic Carpet Ride" & "Rock Me" but other songs are "Straight Shootin’ Woman", "Hey Lawdy Mama", "Who Needs Ya", "Move Over", "Monster" etc. Both of their songs "Born To Be Wild" & "The Pusher" were used prominently in the 1969 cult film "Easy Rider".

The biggest problem with sooo much talent in the same group is that not everybody can shine the same. And everybody deserves to shine. And it eventually tears them apart. Life.

I had the pleasure of see them live...twice. The 1st was in a bar in St. Louis in the 70's, then in the 80's at the Miami Zoo. Miami Zoo use to have live music...saw Leon Russell, and Joe Walsh with the James Gang there too. ❤ Thanks for keeping our music alive!!

They were around a lot longer than four years. They've been making music up until recently, but their greatest hits all came within those early years - seven albums in five years. I can still remember buying new albums in '74,'75 and checking out newer less interesting stuff recently.

I got to see John Kay’s Steppenwolf in 80-81 somewhere that time. John Kay was playing east coast gigs. It was a little place 220 person max probably 500+ was stuffed into the place. Played this and a full set of Steppenwolf. Great music they played with style.

I've definitely heard at least bits of it in several other movies than the ones on that list, and I'm sure it's been in more than just that one video game. Iconic! If you get a chance sometime, blast this while you are driving really fast down a highway or something. 😊

You are definitely having one of those "this is their song?" kinda days ... But to answer your question, #BORN TO BE WILD has been featured in many movies. Most notably in the 1969 film #EASY RIDER starring Peter Fonda [son of the late movie icon Henry Fonda. Peter also wrote and produced #EASY RIDER] , Dennis Hopper [who co-wrote and directed the film] and Jack Nicholson as a drunken young lawyer.

Maybe the original band had a short run, and several of them have died, but the main man, John Kay, is still making music and has been since the 60's. There's a shit-ton of Steppenwolf music out there for you to enjoy, just start looking. Since it sounds like you have already done Magic Carpet Ride, here's a couple of recommendations from a long time fan. See what you think about; The Pusher, It's Never Too Late, Don't Step On The Grass, Sam, Hippo Stomp, or Ballcrusher. Dig deep, friend, you will not regret it.

That riff has even been commercialized to death in many different sales ads...For a political and stoner vibe commentary deep dive Don't Step on The Grass Sam ,,,The Ostrich,, The Pusher ,, ,Monster original version .are super. They were the innovators of that vibe way before the 90s grunge stoners came onto he scene ..Steppenwolf did still make albums up to the mid 70s and John Kaye kept the name alive by getting others to join the band played many shows for decades ..The band just did not fade away but the band members were not the exact same after the mid 70s..

Sometime during the 1990s (I think), lead singer John Kay returned to the group under a new name, “John Kay And Steppenwolf”, and toured together for many years. John Kay is 80 years old.

I grew up in the '80s listening to the cheesy digital synthesizers of that era's music, but the electric pianos and early synthesizers of the '60s and '70s had more satisfying sounds. I suggest you react to the 1973 song "Frankenstein" by the Edgar Winters Group. There's a music video online that others have reacted to.

Different organ. Step used a Hammond B3, distorted, and run through a spinning Leslie. Doors used the classic Vox Continental, a reedier more psychedelic 60’s iconic organ also used by the Animals, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Iron Butterfly, Paul Revere and the Raiders, ? And the the Mysterians, Dave Clark 5, many others. Like Steppenwolf, Deep Purple used the Hammond/Leslie approach. Vanilla Fudge also used a Hammond. Hammond was predominant in Soul and Motown groups, without the Leslie.
