There are perhaps no movie characters more iconic than C.U.M. (otherwise known as the Classic Universal Monsters) and there is perhaps no better way to meet em than with a spooky marathon. From Frankenstein (and his… monster’s bride?) to the Wolf Man, if you’re not hiding behind your Dracula cape by the end then you’re doing something wrong. Grab yourself a drink & some Mummy / Invisible Man bandages and join me & Miles as we brave the ultimate C.U.M.-a-thon!
Plots (via Wiki & ChatGPT):
DRACULA
Renfield, a solicitor, travels to Count Dracula's Transylvanian castle. Dracula, disguised as a coach driver, takes Renfield to the castle. Inside, they discuss Dracula's plans to lease Carfax Abbey in England. Dracula hypnotizes Renfield, and they sail to England, where Dracula preys on Lucy and Mina. Renfield, obsessed with consuming insects, reveals his knowledge of vampires. Van Helsing and the others discover Dracula's true nature, leading to a final confrontation in which Van Helsing kills Dracula with a makeshift wooden stake.
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
In Paris, at the Opera House, Raoul and Philippe watch Christine's performance. Raoul wants her to quit for their love, but she prioritizes her career. The management resigns due to the Opera Ghost, who pressures Christine to replace the prima donna. During a performance, the Phantom kidnaps Christine. Raoul and Inspector Ledoux track them to the Phantom's lair, where Christine promises to marry him to save Raoul. However, a mob later kills the Phantom.
FRANKENSTEIN
In a Bavarian Alps village, scientist Henry Frankenstein and his assistant Fritz assemble a human body from various body parts. They bring it to life during a lightning storm. The creature appears innocent but is misunderstood, leading to Fritz's death and its escape. It accidentally drowns a girl named Maria, terrifies people, and is blamed for murders. The pursuit ends at a windmill, where the creature is trapped and the structure set on fire. Henry survives a fall, but the creature perishes in the flames.
BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN
The Monster survives, and further chaos ensues, leading to encounters with Dr. Frankenstein and Doctor Pretorius. They plan to create a mate for the Monster. After the Bride rejects him, he destroys the laboratory, sacrificing himself and the Bride, allowing Henry and Elizabeth to escape.
THE MUMMY
In 1921, an expedition led by Sir Joseph Whemple discovers the mummy of an Egyptian high priest named Imhotep. Despite Dr. Muller's warnings, Whemple's assistant, Ralph Norton, reads a life-giving scroll, resurrecting Imhotep and driving Norton mad. Ten years later, Imhotep, posing as Ardeth Bey, guides archaeologists to Princess Ankh-es-en-amun's tomb. He falls in love with Helen, believing her to be the princess reincarnated. Imhotep tries to make her immortal, but Helen's prayers to the goddess Isis break his spell. The Scroll of Thoth burns, and Imhotep crumbles to dust, while Helen is saved.
THE INVISIBLE MAN
On a snowy night, a stranger arrives at The Lion's Head Inn and reveals his invisibility, causing panic. This stranger is Dr. Jack Griffin, who discovered invisibility with a drug. Meanwhile, Griffin's fiancée, Flora, grows distressed. Griffin seeks to partner with Dr. Kemp for a reign of terror, but when Kemp betrays him, Griffin goes on a killing spree. Traps are set by the police, leading to Griffin's eventual death.
THE WOLF MAN
Larry Talbot returns to his hometown, falls in love with Gwen, and becomes a werewolf after a fateful encounter with a wolf. He gets warned about his condition by a fortuneteller named Maleva and gives Gwen a protection charm. Larry kills villagers while transformed but remains unaware of his actions. When he realizes his condition and spots a pentagram on Gwen's palm, he gets tied up by his father, John, and transforms, attacking Gwen. Ultimately, his father bludgeons him to death with a silver cane, and Maleva uses a spell to restore his human form.
CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON
During an Amazon expedition, scientists discover a fossilized hand with webbed fingers. Dr. Maia visits his friend Dr. Reed to secure funding for a return expedition, while a piscine amphibious humanoid kills Carl's assistants. The new expedition includes David, Carl, David's girlfriend Kay, and Dr. Thompson. They reach the Black Lagoon, encounter the Gill-man infatuated with Kay, capture it, but it escapes and abducts Kay. The scientists rescue her, kill the Creature, and watch its body sink into the lagoon.

Interesting facts about Lan Chaney. - Both of his parents were deaf so from an early age he had to learn how to be more expressive with his face and body, part of the reason he was an outstanding fit for the silent era of films. - He also did his own makeup and was called The Man of a Thousand Faces. - "Don't step on that spider! It might be Lan Chaney." was a widespread joke spawned from his reputation with makeup and could be argued to be an early example of a meme. Sincerely, a Classic Horror Film Nerd with Too Much Time on Her Hands. 😆

And then the same thing was done to simulate the body falling after the gunshot.

i kinda wish some movie had the balls to reuse these really old film techniques in a modern thriller (let's be real these monsters arent really "horror" characters, they're better as thrillers to me) like the fabric sky and all the special effects from the invisible man, would make a very stylized movie if reused today, it'd be cool, prolly won't happen, but i can dream

It's not the exact same, but Nobuhiko Obayashi's films, especially the anti war trilogy and labyrinth of cinema do use antiquated and fake looking effects purposely

@@maskedsponge yeh the best example i can think of is beetle juice which has super obvious diorama sets for some of the wide shots

The boys are going to love that Frankenstein's monster Comes back, The Wolfman comes back for quite a few times, the Creature from the Black Lagoon comes back twice, but the Invisible Man just comes back in terms of new people taking the formula

The Tale of the Dead Mans Float is my favourite AYAOTD episode! So terrifying when I saw that as a kid, was afraid of going into pools for a little bit just waiting for that f**ker to Classic Universal Monsters get me. It would be pretty sweet if you did a AYAOTD commentary 😊

Theres a theory that Frankenstein's monster's name was Adam because of the whole creation of man thing but I'm not sure how true that is

I believe they did the same actors in multiple movies because actors would sign contracts with particular companies and only make movies with them so if they were made by the same people then ya they are gonna cast their most popular. But could be totally wrong.

Omg I'm so happy it's you and Miles for this! The juxtaposition between old black and white movies and your commentary is so fucking funny! I really hope you continue to do old movies in the future. Also, would LOVE if you two did the musical Phantom with Gerard Butler.
