This os probably one of my favorite modern day horror films even more than Hereditary even more than Quiet Place 1 and 2. Also this film I think talks about addiction and abuse. Either drug addiction and Alcohol addiction and how Dan fought it in the middle in the Nee Hampshire and I guess the Overlook was like goin back to finally get rid of that addiction in a way and the abuse he had from his father as he went back to confront him

Also guys the Overlook's Gold Room. The drink at the bar represents like in The Shining. The Overlook gave Jack a drink but the Overlook wanted something in return and so it influenced him to kill Danny because the Overlook feeds on the Shining power (Steam) just like Rose the Hat and her people

Fun fact: The baseball kid, Jacob Trembay the actor, gave such a convincing performance on set when they were killing him, that the crew was uncomfortable and nauseous from his blood curdling screaming. After the scene was over, he walked off, grabbed a snack, his dad gave him a highfive, and then they left

He starred in an Oscar winning film, nominated for a Sag Award and won a Critics Choice Award for Best Young Performer. His breakthrough role was Room with Brie Larson. That scene also made me super uncomfortable bc of his performance. His lifeless face when they’re still gutting him is haunting. Super happy they kept that scene in the film bc it frames just how cruel and desperate they are.

That cat featured in the movie is based on a real life cat that lives in a hospital and only goes to the room where the patient will die and stays with him/her and comforts them until they pass, only goes to people who are about to pass. Such a cool detail that they included here that has nothing to do with the books.

Ditto. Especially knowing how different the Shining film is from the novel. It's pretty well known that Stephen King hates The Shining and upon learning the differences I completely understand why. Flanagan and King discussed how to go about it and he ended up blending the best of both worlds, to King's great satisfaction. I don't want to spoil Doctor Sleep for those that haven't read it, but he honoured King's original vision for the Shining. Also, Flanagan made Before I Wake, a very underrated fantasy/horror gem that many people have missed out on - starring Jacob Tremblay who played Bradley, the Baseball kid.

A great sequel and companion to the book and film The Shining. Dick Hallorann tells Danny that “shining” is, at its core, a fusion of telepathy and clairvoyance. Being able to shine means being able to communicate with others using the mind, and gives people the ability to see things that have happened in the past, or will happen in the future. There’s also no major revelation about the connection between Dan and Abra in the movie. In the book, when Dan goes to visit Concetta (book character) , he learns that Abra’s mother is none other than Jack Torrance’s daughter. Yes, the book’s version of Dan and Abra’s mom are half-siblings, which means that the character that Abra chooses to call “Uncle Dan” really is, well, Uncle Dan. This fact might have made it easier to understand why Abra and Dan maintain such a firm connection, and possibly even suggest that shining powers are hereditary.

"Seems to me you grew up fine, son." 🥺 Dick is my favorite character in both The Shining and Doctor Sleep. He didn't actually die in the TS book so he mentored Danny quite a bit in DS. So glad Flanagan incorporated him into this movie, even if it was just his ghost

The ending of this movie is different than in the book. MF had to reconcile how the ending of the book The Shining is different than the ending in the movie and that the book Dr. Sleep is a direct sequel to The Shining - the book. Basically MF had to blend 4 different endings into a single satisfactory ending. And he did a great job with it. Stephen King said that he wrote Dr. Sleep because Danny was the only character he had written that he always wondered what ever happened to him. Great review!! Carry On!!

I thought Flanagan did a terrific job combining the end of the book of Doctor Sleep with the endings of the book and film versions of The Shining. I personally prefer the ending of the movie...having the finale take place in the moldering hotel was much more dramatic than simply fighting on the grounds where the hotel once stood; it gives a greater sense of coming full circle and facing down the ghosts of the past, both figuratively and literally. Stephen King even said it helped him make peace with the film of The Shining, which he's long disliked.

@@Corn_Pone_Flicks Yup, the movie actually done so good with the design, although the true know aren't as fleshed out like they are in the book - little details are given in the movie on how old they are and where they originate from. A good example of this is Apron Annie - her Apron in the scene in which they turn Snake-bite Andy has a Pattern that was popular in Mongolia in the 1500s. Wish they showed more of the relationships between them - Like Apron Annie being turned by Grandpa Flick over his long life-span - or Rose and her experience in Ireland. There's also other trinkets that showcase each members different levels of travel - Apron Annies necklace, Grandpa flicks walking stick, Crow daddy showing his tracking skills and Native American knowledge. When Dick talks to Dan for the last time, he says, "Ka is a wheel." Ka is fate - a reference from King's Dark Tower books. Also the horizontal body shot of Rose the Hat is a Flanagan staple. He used it in The Haunting of Hill House and Oculus. Loved this adaptation. It is an amazing juggling act of marrying King's books with Kubrick's adaptation of The Shining and retroactively adds back the warmth missing from Kubrick's movie.

I also was not expecting this sort of movie and was really pleasantly surprised by it. I love how this movie touches on subject of supression of one's self. Supression feels safe but it is not safe because it is detrimental to the person. Doc was suppressed and he was safe but his mental health was ruined and he was acting badly (taking money from wallet of this lady and leaving baby with her alone) and drinking. He then started to work with elderly and helping them with use of his shining to cross peacefully and then he began to pick up, his mind began to heal because for better or worse shining was part of him and it wanted to be experienced. The little girl had the opposite attitude, she was courageous from the start and she was also right in being so.

It mixed the book and movie, which I'm shocked Stephen King said he was fine with the movie being cannon still. The 5hing that is tough is condensing such a long in depth novel, so they skipped some things that explains other things better, but it didn't destroy the film since they had the Kubrick film be a huge focus, which means the book has major differences for the end and thats because the shining novel is almost completely different from the novel. So, for me its amazing they were able to do both and not fuuck up anything. The extended cut is great, people don't like the longer films, but to me even the over 2 hour directors cut, it felt really short with how it was paced, would have enjoyed another hour or more, thats me though, but I still like the extended. My one issue is since Jack was in it for that bar scene, I wish they were able to have Jack nicholson for that, if deaging didn't work, I would be happy to have him atleast as the voice, it kind of lessened the immersion, it could have been a lot more iconic.

I didn't think a sequel would do it justice, but when I heard Flanagan was adapting it, I grew more hopeful...he's a real talent. His wife is Kate Siegel, by the way, and I don't think she's in this one, though if you look on the right-hand wall as Dan approaches the Gold Room, you'll see the mirror from Oculus on the wall. Abra's mom is played by Jocelin Donahue, who was in a really good eighties-style horror film called House of the Devil...you should check the one out.

The shining scared Danny his whole life when he was little, he refused to use it and later he turned to drinking because it dulled the visions. The drink acted as a barrier to any other people's feelings getting in. That is how the True Knot missed him as a child. The King universe is all tied together every story. John Koffee from the Green Mile had the shine. Mother Abigayle in The Stand had it too. The losers in the story IT all had the shine. Pennywise used fear to enhance the flavor of the people he would feast on just like the True Knot.

I've actually only ever seen the 3-hour director's cut, oddly enough. I don't even know what was cut out for the final version! I think it's a beautiful movie that does a good job of fixing the problems with Kubrick's adaptation while in and of itself being an excellent adaptation of Stephen King's work. My favorite thing is all of the shot-for-shot parallels from The Shining, that hammer in the cyclical nature of the Overlook's curse. It's an interesting reference to cycles of abuse, with Danny essentially retracing his father's footsteps, but in a different way and without evil motives. He breaks the cycle.

She is such a great villain! And it actually pained me a bit- What happened to her, yet I loved every part of the ending ♡

The scene with Jacob trembay broke me more than it should’ve more for the fact he looks so much like my little brother and they’re around the same age and it was just a gut punch for me

Flanagan was able to convince Stephen King to allow him to adapt Doctor Sleep with two scenes that he wrote. One was the scene when Dan is talking to Lloyd/Jack and the other was the fact he wrote the original Shining ending as this movie's ending. he felt by doing that he was giving the ending that Stephen King was denied in the original film. Since he was doing that while reminding Mr. King that people were more familiar with Kubrick's film than the 1997 mini series they had to make this a direct sequel from Kubrick's.

When I saw this, I was super excited to see the hotel again because I first saw The Shining when I was twelve and grew up with it. This was a great sequel to The Shining.

Continuity issue: adult Danny revisiting the apartment in the Overlook in Dr. Sleep, looks through the axed panel into the bathroom. The door shows the left side panel in tact, but Jack broke through both panels in the Shining just before leaving Wendy to go correct Mr. Haloran.

Oh and in the book doctor sleep we find out that Jack Torrance (Danny's dad) had a fling with one of his students and impregnated her which spawned a granddaughter named Abra, so Danny is actually Abra's uncle.

Tonaly, this and "The Green Mile" are the best Steven King adaptations. They are, i think, by far the closet to the feel and themes of a Steven King book.

The office where Danny is interviewed for the job is a replica of the office Jack Torrance was interviewed in at the Hotel.

Not just the office, but at one point Dr. Walton does the same pose and hand movements as Ullman. Ullman had this particular pose where he tilted his head to one side, and with his elbows on the desk, he had his right hand overlapping his left one from above.

Technically the shining movie was nothing like the book, doctor sleep is almost the same except for the fact that the hotel really isn't in it just the plot of land that it used to sit upon

❤❤, Tony in the book "The shinning" was a real gost, but probably it was to hard to make scenes where tony would appear cause it would mean having to make very psychedelic scenes (the only movies that come to mind are poltergeist and nightmare on elm street where those type of scenes started appearing), so i guess in the movie that's why it was just a finger 😂😂. And I think didn't do well because almost Nobody knew it was a sequel to the shinning and was not a lot of promotion, but almost everybody who watches the movie loves it

@@whitenoisereacts I believe it was Man Of Steel. I’m not a huge “horror” fan (although I did like the Shining and Dr Sleep). I’m more of a sci-fi and superhero (marvel/dc) fan. I think I watched all of your DC film reactions, and Apollo 13 was an amazing film by the way. I loved your reaction to that classic. I’m looking forward to your guy’s reaction to Alien and Aliens. Trivia: I’m a former military serviceman and I had a small cameo in “Man of Steel” as a military extra. 😁

It's interesting to see people who hadn't seen either movie watch them for the first time so close together. The other place where people don't give a movie like this enough of a chance is that The Shining had nearly 40 years to be a supernatural horror classic before this movie came out. How do you sequelize that? If you attempt it, you'll never please everyone. you just have to settle on a story you believe is worth telling and do the best you can. They attempted to expand the world beyond the Overlook. Following what Dick Halloran said. That there are people out there who don't even know they can shine. Alternate to that, they could have stayed with the Overlook and made the whole story about that. The hotel calling to Danny. No matter where he went. Some people just won't be pleased no matter what you do. Anyway, I liked it. And I doubt anyone else could have done better.
