I love that, unlike most horror movies, the victim didn't just escape and struggle to run away, but got to kick some serious ass on his way out. So satisfying.

I love films where the character survives by being smart. First there was the ear-plugging tactic, and then the part where he observed the way the brother kept kicking the door closed, which he used to get his leg into stabbing range.

the deer head at the end was two-fold: a callback to the deer at the beginning but also a callback to the conversation they had about the deer when they first got to the house. the dad casually mentions the deer being like pests and how they've been taking over and should be wiped out; it's an allegory for how many white people think black people and black culture are taking over their neighborhoods. also back during slavery, black men used to be called "bucks" so it was sort of poetic justice that the dad was killed with a buck's antlers. there are so many juicy details like that strewn throughout the film if you go back to watch it again. for example, Chris literally picked cotton to save his life (picking the cotton from the chair to stuff his ears so he wouldn't be hypnotized again). the writing in this movie is just brilliant and absolutely deserved the Oscar. bravo to Ninetailedbrush for figuring out the twist before the ending haha

and i felt that when he was tied to the chair and there was a deer in front of him. it was kind of like he was confronting himself. i also remember when he woke up on the first night, there was a lion plushie at the bed side and he turnt it around after the nightmare he had about the deer which plays on the prey and predator aspect of it all. the deer at the start was also hit by a car which made him think about his mom who also passed due a hit and run!

Thanks for the extra inside on the buck. I knew there was more to it. I took it as him entering the situation like a deer in headlines and that she showed no compassion regarding it being hit. Also that Dr. Dad was hunter for trophy purposes. I don’t know the difference between a deer and a buck

There is a powerful but really painful alternate ending where instead of Rod pulling up at the end as Rose is dying, the police show up and arrest Chris. He can’t remember specific details to make clear he was acting in self-defense and the house burned down, so all evidence there is gone. Rod goes to visit Chris in prison months later and Chris is kind of resigned to the fact that he’ll never “get out” of prison because at least he stopped what Rose’s family is doing. Jordan Peele said he ended up using the actual ending because he wanted people to walk away feeling positive and uplifted with Chris as a hero and not as another victim.

I was in the theater positive that the police were going to roll up, incorrectly assess the situation, and shoot Chris. Rose and her family would somehow become martyr-victims while Chris's name is posthumously dragged through the mud. I was thrilled to see Rod get out of that car.

While the alternate ending is what would happen in real life, I do like the happier ending better. I'm not black, so I don't speak for that community - but if there were a similar movie about the marginalised groups I'm part of, I would find the happier ending way more empowering. I and many other marginalised people are TIRED of always being presented as the victim or the aggressor; I can imagine it's really nice to get to be the hero for once.

The symbolism at the end of Chris’s salvation is very deep. Cotton literally saves his life and murdering the doctor with the head of a “buck” is very symbolic as well, given the term was used to describe the bigger slave men. Jordan Peele’s breakthrough masterpiece. Dudes, the brother acts creepy because they’ve done this so many times without fail, they had no doubt Chris was going to be just another victim.

Him PICKING the cotton saved his life.... crazy how that was used, and many actually didn't get it so it was more subtle than I originally thought. I mean saying it it seems very obvious and intentional for the audience to see a black man being held hostage and sold by a white family to pick cotton to save his life.... lol on paper that seems very try hard to use their term.

37:17 - The deer analogy dates back to American enslavement. Enslaved Black people were referred to in deer terms, as "bucks" and "does" You see more predator/prey analogy throughout the rest of the film. The creepy song that plays toward the beginning, "Run Rabbit Run" was a Jim Crow song about hunting Black people in the American south. When Chris wakes up just before getting hypnotized, Rose's stuffed lion is facing him. Lions are one of the primary symbols of Africa, and is considered a dominant animal (predator). After he's hypnotized, he wakes up with it facing away from him.

@@whitenoisereacts I didin't mean like "oh you have to use the right academical word" is just that there's a recurrent racial bias towards black people, usually about their bodies, when many white people act like they are complimenting black people or apreciating them but they are actually objetifying them. An interesting thing about this movie is how the blind guy is obsessed by Chris's eyes. With them he doesn't only expect to get his eyesight back but he also seems to think that whatever Chris had that make him good at photography will be transferred to him if he gets his eyes. Remember, the procedure necessitate the removal of a big part of the host's brain, so the majority of what make Chris himself will also be gone. The dude seems to think that whatever it is that make Chris good at his hobbies is stored in his body rather than it being the consequence of who he is as an individual. So the blind dude is using a classic racist argument despite the fact that he claims that it has nothing to do with Chris ethnicity.

One of my favorite things about this movie are the subtle miscommunication between the main character and the other black people he meets. The main character uses AAVE (ex. snitch, good to see another brotha out here, etc.) and cultural gestures (fist bump) regularly throughout the film. It's very telling that the other black people aren't in touch with their blackness because they don't understand what the main character means by those things. Examples being Georgina replacing snitch with tattletale and Logan trying to give a handshake when approached with a fist bump. It's subtle but obvious once you know these characters have a white brain and no knowledge of black culture anymore.

I just saw this for the first time. It's brilliant, the acting and cinematography was great. But it was one of the more disturbing films I've seen and I don't know if I'd watch it again.

How is it that NTB seems to have hardly seen any films, and yet figures out the twist in everything about five minutes in? He should either be a screenwriter, or some sort of quality-checker to make sure your script isn't too obvious. You guys should watch Mulholland Dr. I dare you to figure that one halfway in. I think this film was pretty critical of the so-called "woke" movement, where you have bad guys who can't stop proclaiming how much they admire black people, but who are just using them to advance their own agendas and who make everything about race and differences, instead of just treating people like people.

Bradley Whitford made a very witty observation that between this movie and his role in Handmaid’s Tale he now has an entire career built on male white privilege. He is so good in both roles and the comment really stuck in my mind.

I mean you gotta give Peele some credit for having the sheer balls to make this movie with this message and just drop it in the moviegoer's lap.

I just realised that coz the Doctor is dead, there is no one to administer and keep an eye on the state of the anaesthetic so the blind guy will wake up eventually.

Jordan is doing another movie called Nope about aliens. He wants to do a Gargoyles movie based on the Disney series from the 90s but now Disney doesn’t want to do a movie.

IIRC there was a cut of the movie with a much darker ending, where instead of his friend showing up it was the actual police.
