Which Jordan Peele movie is YOUR favorite?

The thing about this movie is that in it's core it's not just about aliens or monsters. It's about animal behavior and of how some people think they know how to control them. But in reality you can't control them, you could only understand and respect them. So with the them park guy, he thought he could control the alien and maybe felt that he was special because the chimp didn't attack him. The only reason I think the chimp didn't kill him is because thanks to the table cloth covering the chips eyes, it didn't seem like the boy was making eye contact. Chimps, I believe, consider eye contact to be an act of challenge when aggressive. So yeah having animal trainers be the ones to know how to take down the alien was fitting.

38:31 Fun fact: The people screaming were first directed to scream as if being eaten by an alien, then they were directed to scream as if on a rollercoaster. The two audios were then overlayed for the people screaming inside Jean Jacket, so that's why it almost sounds like a roller coaster.

The main message the film gives us is pretty simple. "Some animals just can't be trained." "Respect wildlife" "A wild animal is still a wild animal." That's why the chimpanzee side story comes in hand with the main one.

Another tragic Detail in the Gordy scene is that Gordy was asking young Ricky in sign language, "What happened to family" before he was killed 😭 like he didn't even know what he was doing during his rampage. Also fun fact, most of not all of the night scenes were actually filmed during the day.

My favorite part is how at the end, we, the audience see that Em got the shot they wanted, but she's not looking at it. All Em cares about at the end is that her brother is still alive. That's good character development and it sort of reminds me of the end of Rocky.

Fun Fact: The creature Jean Jacket's design was inspired by both sea creatures like jellyfish, octopuses and squids, and the otherworldly Angels from the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion

The gordy scene has many meanings 1. Backstory of Jupe’s character development 2. Example of a "bad miracle" - something bad happens to you but in return you get something good (Jupe survived the attack but the other actors died except the daughter, he then became a famous child star - had his own show, his own theme attraction and made money because of the tragic event) 3. NEVER GIVE ANIMALS EYE CONTACT! - the reason why Gordy didn't attack Jupe was because the cloth from the table was covering his eyes so he didn't really have eye contact with Jupe. It also mentions how animals shouldn't be in the entertainment industry for a long time because their still wild animals "you can take them away from the wild, but you can't take the wild out of them" 4. The standing shoe symbolizes a psychological healing process when someone focuses on an object to get away from the thing that's threatening them - Jupe was going through a traumatic event and then sees a shoe, in his mind, he sees it standing up when in reality, it's not.

Interestingly, there's a movie theory saying that Jean Jacket isn't actually an alien but a undiscovered aerial megafauna like a cryptid.

Jean Jackets design is probably my favorite for a cryptid. A creature that is territorial, threatened when given eye-contact, uses electromagnetic fields to fly, sleek when it needs to be fast, but creates a larger, more visually engaging body in order to maximize its chance of prey looking at it (the snapping 'fabric' makes it really obvious its trying to get your attention), and all of this given without needing 80 sequels or a series explaining every single detail about it. I am a huge fan of the thought put into this movie.

This movie took me off guard with its marketing and at first I thought it was OK. After a second and third watch I now think it's incredible really shows how intuitive of a Director Jordan Peele really is.

The creature design is so dope and unique. The open hole thingy looking just like a cowboy hat and this taking place in a ranch with actual “cowboys”. Such dope details.

I can understand why some people weren't fans of this movie, but personally, I think it was great. It had a lot of thought provoking themes that go deep the more you analyze it, and rewatching it again helped me pick up the small hints I missed the first time I watched. If you're still confused about some of the themes, I suggest watching analysis videos. There's some really good ones!

This movie is like JAWS but with a UFO

I seen this film three times in theater, and my favorite detail of all is OJ naming the creature "Jean Jacket," in connection to the horse Em wanted as a child. In the end, she finally did train the beast in the way she wanted by getting the shot.

I feel with this movie, me and probably a lot of others gripe and moan about how bad and boring remakes, reboots, prequels and spinoffs are now adays. This movie is truly just an Original story and idea, well shot, well acted. It helps to be a natural theorizer as the movie does reveal plot points early on with rewatches and never outright tells you whats happening.

So I get the impression that you two don’t like discussing politics and social commentary in your videos which makes Jordan Peele movies kind of difficult to do. The thing that ties it all together is the idea of exploitation and chasing spectacle for personal gain. OJ is pretty much the only character that respects the power that he’s dealing with enough to try to understand it. Jupe saw first hand what happens when you don’t respect natural forces, but instead of learning from the experience, he thinks he has some special affinity or gift. He thinks because he survived a tragedy that he can control the situation. I also love the creature design. Moves like a stingray, unfurls like a jellyfish, uses a siphon to eat, like sea squirts, and makes a clicking sound that could easily be echolocation. You can’t really make sense of it when looking at it. It’s lovecraftian in a way no other film maker has created.

it's good that "people on a roller coaster screaming" was mentioned cause the sound editor used a combination of that + the sounds of actual screams of horror, everything was mixed in and edited so to give it this unsettling feel to it! post edit: I watched this movie in theartre and it's, imo, the only way to truly appreciate it to the fullest!

If you didn't like Get Out, you probably won't like this. These two movies are very well put together IF you put in the effort to look deeper. Analyzing all the different details make the movie better. All in all this movie is about the problem we have with making animals spectacles and thinking that as humans we are always in control. Us was obvious in what it was, not much deeper meaning to it.. so easy for the average movie watcher to enjoy. Nope was a puzzle; multiple pieces that look random alone, but all connect. This film is perfect for watchers who like to put the work in.

After I watched it, I went to look for deeper meanings and symbolism that made it better for me.

I do believe that guy was traumatized, but sometimes trauma develops/hides differently that what we're used to seeing. He became obsessed with his trauma. Because it haunts him. Or so I see it.

I LOOOOVED this movie. For me, it is a masterpiece in filmaking history. It takes a concept that we all know and takes it to a whole other level. The alien's final form is insane... Almost as it came straight out of dreamland... It left me speechless.

The monkey scene left me in shock the first time I watched it... I wasn't even breathing.

SPOILERS HERE!: Lessons I took from this movie: *don’t* mess with monkeys, *don’t* exploit my trauma unless I want like 30 people to be eaten by a giant flying alien, *do* recognise people’s work-based contributions unless I want a distant future relative of theirs to risk death by said giant flying alien. Oh and don’t work for TMZ 😂 FR though, there were some hella interesting themes here. If anything I wish they were explored a bit more.

The driving force was money, they were broke and needed the ophra shot to save the ranch. I love the Gordy segment a LOT, and while it is kinda separate from the main plot, it shines a light on Jupe's character and why he does such a crazy thing as to try to captalize on Jean Jacket's predatory nature. He tought of himself as someone who could survive this kind of situation, a special person that survived what happened on the gordy show and not only has compartmentalized the trauma by dealing with it as a pop culture moment (hence the museum on his office and how he can only describe what happened through the SNL sketch) but was spared by gordy, receiving only a fist bump instead of violence. That's is how many of us deal with traumatic events, turning them into Spectacle and self-aggrandizing narratives. In the end Jean Jacket and Gordy are the same: Wild predators taken for granted by humans in the name of spectacle. But the movie also takes the time to portray Jean Jacket as an allegory to Spectacle itself: a predatory instinct of the human being that eventually consume us. It's by design that Jean Jacket looks like and eye, and also why it's "eye" (the square thing inside of it) is shapped like a screen. It is the camera AND the screen, it is cinema, Spectacle, AND the audience (Jupe, thinking it was a bunch of aliens in a ship, called them "the viewers" hahahaha); and it's coming to get you, eat you, and broadcast your screaming suffering to attract other people's attention. Peele's movies usually carry a racial comentary and altough it is a lot less in focus in this movie, I like how we see the black jockey riding a horse projected in Jean Jacket's eye in the begining of the movie. It's an impossible non-diagetic shot, only there to make the meaning evident: the creature is cinema, cinema is predatory, it's first prey was a black man: made history only to be forgotten by the public, making it only fair that his descendents will be one to tame the beast at the end of the story. Maybe it says a lot about how Peele feel's about being an acclaimed black movie director, did he tamed this wild animal? The meaning and consequences of spectacle and our relationship to it are the point of the movie, and I think that's the best Peele movie to this date.

I do believe the main horror of the film is just having the UFO be a live creature... That ALONE IS 10 TIMES SCARIER THAN A UFO WITH ALIENS DRIVING IT- Then the screams that you can keep listening to while it flies by ;-; and then the blood and the flyin objects that could easily kill you... For me, this is STEPHEN KING LEVEL OF HORROR

My favorite thing about this movie is its about relationships. Emerald and OJ, how he's willing to do anything for his sister bc he knows she was left behind by their dad, left out in a way she couldn't understand and so he's willing to stare down a predator like JJ for her. But also it's humans and how they view animals. "Trained animals can be a bit unpredictable." -Amber Why does it take a tragedy like Gordy (RL incident was Travis the Chimp) for people to finally respect animals? Why did it take a Chimp eating a woman's face, destroying her ability to live her life normally, for Hollywood to respect how strong, aggressive and primal chimps are? Why did it take 50+ kittens/puppies to die in Milo and Ottis before places banned animal abuse for film? Why did Cannibal Holocaust decide the least worse thing they did was hack snakes, gators, etc into pieces for film? We misuse animals, mishandle them, and then shoot them dead when they misbehave. When they act like animals. Montecore, but also Tilikum, Travis, cock fighting, dog fighting, drowning bags of kittens, the extinction of entire animal species...

They get the Oprah shot not just in Em's pic but the footage from the manual camera. The Alien cannot digest the metal. That's what was falling from the sky in the beginning, the alien regurgitating all the metal. It did it with the crowd after it killed them, Angel was wrapped in barbed wire which is why he survived and it also spat the camera out after it took Antlers

The good thing about seeing this movie again in the reactions is feeling like Jordan Peele is a bastard. He leaves us with the vibe of understanding something like extraterrestrials all the time, through children's play, animals on camera, everything we always know is similar to what we've been passed on as the popular image of the alien, but suddenly, there In the middle of the film, we get its originality in the mystery. This director is a pearl of horror, comedy, adventure and suspense cinema.

The Gordy's Home scene in the Dolby theater..... so quiet you could hear a pin drop, it was THE MOST unsettling, tense thing I've ever felt. I shit you not, that scene was on my mind for days!! Fr fr I was already a fan of Peele before seeing this movie, but this imo put him up there in my top. The sound design, the cinematography (those night scenes, MY GOD), the flawless way the comedy weaved in with the story.....imo this was EXCELLENT!!!

I really appreciated NOPE because it's such a beautiful, cinematic film, and Daniel Kaluuya's performance, once again, was a home run. I was very impressed by how he played such an awkward and reserved character in a captivating way. I think Peele's genre-shifting and experimenting with different cinematic style were successful here. But, I also agree with your criticisms. At times, the plot felt a bit aimless, and there were pacing problems. I had issues with the nouvelle-vague-ish plot. I don't think all art has to have an explicit morale, but movies with tighter stories are typically more enjoyable. Although, the vagueness definitely made me think a lot about the way people exploit animals (for spectacle or some other reason) and control them without full understanding (which was probably the point all along). For me there was a quite a bit to like, and I'm excited to see what the next Peele/Kaluuya collaboration will be!! ( and I hope you continue to react even though he's not your fave :) )

I was hoping that you guys would react to this movie. I was very curious to hear your thought on it. To me, it has very strong M. Night Shyamalan vibes. Not the plot or anything like that, but more the way the movie makes you feel. I also think that the movie ending is somewhat dissatisfying to a lot of people because there's not really a bad guy or even a "monster". It's not a creature going on a rampage and causing lots of property damage and loss of life. It's chosen a very quiet, remote area and it's acting like an actual animal, despite it's size. It's only eating enough to survive and it's eating the creatures that challenge it by looking it straight in the eye. It's exhibiting animal behavior that is so similar to animals that we are accustomed to, that it's difficult to truly blame the creature for the deaths. If a man taunts a lion in the wild and it kills him, we usually blame the man, not the lion. Yes, the lion killed the man, but the man provoked it and that's exactly what Jupe was doing. Also, the animal behaving like animals that we are familiar with takes away a lot of the strangeness and mystery. It may look weird and be huge and unfamiliar to us, but it acts like animals that we're familiar with. You, yourself, James, commented on the behavior of chimps and didn't blame the chimp for killing people. You blamed the people for putting the animal in that situation. I think that's why the movie kept showing us what happened with the chimp. We're able to see the similarities between the two situations, even if we don't consciously recognize it. Just my thoughts.

I found your guys' complaints of the movie being "vague" funny because I thought the message(s) of the movie was pretty clear and very "in your face" about it (especially when the TMZ guy came in), the most clear out of all Jordan Peele's film so far, and THAT may be my biggest complaint about it, even though I enjoyed the movie (and it's messaging) quite a lot. I still think Get Out has the better screenplay but this movie was so much more entertaining to watch. It was an experience watching it in the theater! I didn't have a problem with the pacing at all, but I can see how it could drag on for some people, especially after the plot twist is revealed that the space ship is actually the alien and not a lot of action (a "spectacle" if you will) comes from it. But the way I see it is - the scene when the kids dressed up as stereotypical aliens trying to prank OJ was like Jordan Peele saying to the audience, "Hey, I know you were all expecting a plot about alien abduction and destruction while watching this film, but I'm going to surprise you by doing my own thing and telling the story I want to tell about animal exploitation instead!", which is very Jordan Peele and I love it lol I love that he's bringing unique and original stories to Hollywood (which is rare these days). The theme of the film is the exploitation of animals and how far human beings with go for economic gain, entertainment and glory all for spectacle. The movie starts with a bible verse talking about spectacle turned vile by humans, then sound from Gordy's rampage on set (i.e. the exploitation of a very dangerous animal (and the consequences of that)), then finally the actual shot of the alien's mouth that resembles a camera lens. The purpose of Gordy's segment of the film was to explore the message of glorified spectacle and the idiotic and selfish actions humans will do to achieve that (i.e. bringing a dangerous animal on set without any safety precaution and believing that the animal can be "controlled" when in reality that's not possible. And to also pair it with what the characters were doing with the alien with trying to control it at the end to get a picture of it for profit). Jupe was severely traumatized by Gordy, but instead of learning the lesson of respecting animals and not trying to control them, he does the exact same thing that put him in that same predicament as a child in the first place, only this time he actually does get killed by the animal. He believed that he could control Jean Jacket because he so happened to not be killed by Gordy that day on set, but what he unfortunately doesn't realize is that a table cloth was covering Gordy's eyes when he was under the table, thus saving his life. OJ and Em were also trying to control Jean Jacket for economic gain throughout the whole movie, but in the end Em finally cared more about her brother than about the future glory of finally getting the "Oprah shot" of the alien (notice how she didn't look at the polaroid shot and instead only looked at her brother in the final scene)), thus the message of the film finally landing in the story and to its characters (excluding OJ, because even when he was trying to get the Oprah shot he always respected the animals). You're right in that there really is A LOT to unpack after watching the film for the first time. Right after I left the theater I too was so overloaded with information and I needed time to process what I just saw lol. But after I was alone with my thoughts for a little bit and I was able to replay the film scene by scene in my head, I was amazed by how Peele executed the messages throughout the film, even when for a few scenes (like when we actually see the alien's mouth in the beginning of the movie) I didn't realize it at the time! And honestly you can never go wrong with video essays, because you can appreciate a film so much more and get different perspectives.

Honestly this is my favorite Jordan Peele movie. And I love all his work. But this one…. It’s fascinating, it’s spooky as fuck (I still catch myself looking at clouds) but most importantly, it’s FUN. The cinematography was excellent as well.

LMAO, NTB makes me feel like a dumb-ass quite regularly 😂 I was totally weirded out by that line, but had no idea what was meant by ‘what if it’s not a ship?’ Haha. Side note: I was super glad they cut away at 36:30, speaking as someone who watched in the theatre. My throat was closing watching that and was starting to do the focussing on my breathing thing 😅

I could talk about this movie for hours lol. I just want to sit with Jordan Peele and ask him question after question about certain choices made in the film and where he was going with certain things. I love the themes of the movie, and the fact that some people don’t try to understand it is crazy to me. This movie is pure art. I love it so much. I’ve actually seen it so many times that I’ve started dreaming about aliens 🙃

I LOVE this movie! "What am I looking at?" and subverting all your expectations is pretty rare and daring way to tell a story! In the end it was just an animal behaving like an animal and nothing more.

It's awesome that you said 'it sounds like a rollercoaster' !! Because if I remember correctly, the screams of the people inside Jean Jacket were spliced with 'screams of delight' like being on a amusement park ride, and screams of pure terror/agony, it's super cool you caught that so quickly!

you never actually see the alien. it took on inorganic objects that it ate. jupes cowboy hat, the directors cape and the camera lens..I havent yet to see anyone address that. but we the viewers were so obsessed with wanting to see it. much like Jupe did while profiting from making things a spectacle, that room with the shoe and memorabilia, his costar, the alien Jean jacket. theres so much more in this though.

No one I went with got it but I loved this movie!! Everything is all about spectacle. Jupe thought he could control it. He found out the hard way. 🤦🏾‍♀️

i saw this film at the cinema and it was an amazing experience, I loved it! my top peele movies are: 1- get out 2- nope 3- us amazing reaction like always ✨

Nope is my favorite Jordan Peele movie and my second favorite movie of 2022 (after EEAAO ofc). It has so many themes and genres going on in it. It's a sci-fi, it's horror, it's a Western. It deals in themes of exploitation, the dangers of chasing spectacle contrasting the simple human need to be Seen and Understood by your fellow man, the painful tragedy of Jupe's unprocessed trauma and how it affects the plot going forward, the underlying Bad Miracle, the pressures of fame and monetary need, the BEAUTIFULLY rendered cosmic horror of being consumed by something so alien and uncontrollable, the wonderful character dynamics that feel so ingrained and REAL... the cinematography, the sound design, the subtle normalcy of the acting. I love it so much.

The Gordy scene had me on the edge of my seat when I first saw this in theaters. Jordan Peele actually posted the intro for Gordy’s Home on his social media. No idea why he took it out of the film.

Get Out and Nope are fantastic. This is easily the Signs of this generation. One of the better horror movies of this year. Us isn't his best but is still awesome as well.

The use of very earthy and recognizable sound effects makes this movie on a different level. For every fear scream they over lap it with the screams from excitement ( like a theme park ride scream ) , they don’t use normal trop alien sounds which makes jean jacket seem so real

I love that the opening credits included Terry Notary, who played Gordy the chimp. He's an excellent motion and creature performer and has been in several big films including the recent Planet of the Apes trilogy and Attack the Block. Gordy's face was entirely computer generated, but even without the cgi head, Terry still looks very effective and creepy.

This movie is amazing and very incredible.

Nine asking "What am I looking at?" during the opening credits was so relatable. This THING is beyond human comprehension! It was inspired by Biblical Angels in terms of design, but with a monstrous, Evangelion-like take. With a dash of Lovecraftian shenanigans, too. Mr. Kaluuya himself also ate this movie up. He seems to really thrive in serious roles like this. He was the perfect, classic "stoic-cowboy" in a modern Western-like horror. Who would have thought that combining the two genres would work so well? And fun fact: The night scenes were filmed using a special technique during the day that makes it look like night. That's why the picture is so pristine!

My favourite detail of the film is re-watching it and keeping track of how all the electricity/lights turn off as the camera pans across the night sky during the 'GHOST' chapter, and again with the stadium lights during 'LUCKY's chapter when OJ went to get Lucky, after the abduction of the people at Jupiter's Claim. Once you realise it the menace is so apparent. Even Angel understands when his van stops, he looks out the window and notices all lights are off in the vicinity, and he understands the creature is in the area. Also when Emerald and Angel are arguing about leaving the house after the blood rain attack you can watch the house lights turn off, and OJ realises the creature is in the area.

There’s a possibility that the creature wasn’t an alien at all but something of this planet. When you think about how much of the ocean is unexplored and how many creatures humans are still discovering, this one could just be another animal on this planet….a pissed off, territorial, sand dollar-looking predator. That form it evolves into toward the end reminds me of when an animal challenges another predator by trying to look big and intimidating. Also Gordy killed the mom and dad character, and mauled the little girl who survived…that is until Jupe got her eaten 😕…poor girl, survived being mauled by a chimp and then gets eaten alive…that really disturbed me…but at least it’s just a movie 🥸 Jupe and the chimp i could type an essay about and how it’s connected to the story and OJ and the creature but there are plenty of RU-vid videos that have already done it 😄

Some films deserve multiple views for you to understand certain themes, takes etc. This is one of those films. You can't watch this once and have a full idea on what you're seeing. This deserves multiple views, as I think a lot of the subtlety is lost within the themes. Y'all thinking the mantis was more than just a mantis has me cryin. Enjoyed the reaction. Keep at it.

The main character is so stoic! But it works! And I'm impressed by that... Usually you don't put such a "dry" characater as a main one because it doesn't "entertain" much... But GOD Jordan Peele excelled at putting such a stoic character as the star of the show. About the cameraman, I knew the guy was gonna kill himself getting the impossible shot as soon as I he made his appearance. Because he is kinda crazy lol

The fact that Antler's ego/arrogance believed he could've filmed well without once looking at the Viewfinder, going manually and will live pass a creature that he just saw eat a man in FRONT OF HIM.

The theme was that humans think they can control or exploit everything. It's very prevalent. The MCs trying to make money off the alien, Jupes entire story, the mantis blocking their chance to film the alien, and Gordy going ape shxt. There all throughout the movie. The chimp scene confused me on first watch so thats fair but it makes sense in the entire theme. The pacing gets boring after the alien changes form but I think yall was looking to deep and in turn missed the point. The "UFO" is very animalistic. Reinforcing the man vs nature subplot. You if watch this while having the mindset of everyone being selfish for their own gain its ties it all up well.

At its core, the movie is about the ridiculous lenghs everyday people as well as professional filmmakers go through to get "The Shot". Whether its for the fame, recognition, prestige, etc. People will go so far that they will do dumb things that put themselfs or others at risk. It can be also viewed as selfish as to why would someone go so far. At many points in the film you guys said it yourselves they have the shot or it's not worth it. Yet the characters in the film wanted more and ignored their safety. Hollywood, RU-vid, TikTok all do it. Two examples of RU-vid: A few years ago a couple was doing a video where the bf told the gf to shoot him and he was going to use a book as protection and sadly there was a death involved for a video. Second example is the Logan Paul Japan drama a few years back. As for Hollywood, there are plenty of examples out there.

Jordan Peele actually used "happy" screams for Jean Jackets meals to confuse our ears. Rollercoaster screams, waterpark screams. Why does it sound so happy?

This is by far his best film. More importantly how did you not like like Get Out? That is absurd.

I really, really like this movie and I'm happy to see you guys watch it. One thing that I think is central to this movie is how human/self-obsessed humans are. When the idea of aliens is introduced to the characters, they go for the fame of getting it on Oprah and say "we are being surveilled", "Intergalactic travelers", "futuristic humans coming back in time to stop us from destroying the planet", and "world killers"/"planetary destroyers". In reality though, it is an animal that stumbled onto their ranch and established it as its territory. It has nothing to do with the human characters or humanity. Jupe is obsessed with the Gordy incident and the bad miracle that he was a part of, but instead of learning a lesson about using animals for spectacle, he walked away with this feeling of self-importance. He survived so there must have been something special about him. Or maybe he thinks it was because he created this fist bump tradition with Gordy, or something. So, he then walked into his relationship with Jean Jacket and made the same mistakes that were made with Gordy. He believed his self-importance and determination was plot-armor and didn't learn how to properly treat a creature. Even down to the assumptions you guys made. The mantis is an animal living its life that was on the camera because why not. It wasn't to help or hinder, it just was and that had nothing to do with the human characters. And while some animals can hold grudges, Jean Jacket was dropping anything that was difficult to digest and it might have dropped the metal horse there because it just did and it wasn't an intentional action motivated by any spite. Another thing I love in this movie is that the Gordy attack took six minutes and 13 seconds and Jupe found Jean Jacket at 6:13. Also, the thing with Holst has been much debated, but the theory I get behind the most is that he is jaded, tired and he wants to feel something and capture something real again. He wants something that makes him feel, even if no one sees it and even if it puts others at a disadvantage. He felt something filming Jean Jacket. He didn't feel like the world deserves the perfect shot, but he sees the perfect shot and so he went to get it. It doesn't matter that no one sees it, that it puts him in lethal danger to get it, that it inconveniences and endangers the people he is working with. Nothing matters, but that he is getting that perfect shot and getting to feel something real.

Don't mistake all the cameramen's actions for as noble as Em and OJ's. Antler was simply a filmmaker caught up with trying to film what normally can't be, his life wasn't his priority. TMZ simply wanted to exploit any tragedy, including his own, for fame, which is why he was so desperate for his camera. The point of the film is how the industry exploits tragedy for spectacle and how it mistreats everyone from child actors to animals, trying to make them act as they want instead of understanding what they are. "Some animals aren't meant to be tamed" as Otis Sr. said. Jupe experienced a bad miracle when the shoe somehow stood straight up, and Gordy didn't kill him (because of the tablecloth.) He romanticized this trauma trying to find his purpose in his miracle, and thought he could force one on Jean Jacket. He even visualizes the "aliens" in a mix of Gordy's chimp body and the 1998 film cameras for their heads, which is why his kid's costumes look like that. His employees are also wearing Gordy's shirt with red armbands instead of black for blood. Also, when Em calls herself Nobody to the one eyed man (TMZ), it's a reference to the Odyssey where Odysseus introduced himself that way to the Cyclops. Him losing his camera and nearly crying in desperation for his failure to capture a spectacle was akin to the cyclops being blinded. He needed something to exploit to "see". It also foreshadows how Em finally tames Jean Jacket.

Here's something I don't think people realize about Jordan's films. His storytelling is concise. GET OUT was a weekend trip. US was a few days at a beach resort. NOPE was the creature's activity over 6 or 7 months. I've watched some reactions on this channel. It seems to me the participants are too anxious to get the REVEAL of a film instead of letting the story simply unfold. This is especially true of the guy on the right. The guy on the right said he like the way NOPE was shot but not GET OUT. Dude, GET OUT had a 5 million dollar budget. NOPE was made for 40 or 50 million. C'mon, man.

Just after the film was wrapped up in production the entire Jupiter’s Claim set is now located in the Universal Studios Backlot.

I think this is definitely a film that benefits from repeat viewing. I think I felt a similar way to you guys the first time I saw it (I might have liked it a bit more though). Now I really love it though. There are just some films that you understand a lot more when you see it twice and know exactly where its going

one fun thing, you mention roller coaster, thats actually what it was, for the screams of the people being digested they apparently filmed two versions, people screaming in pain and fear, and people screaming from a roller coaster then blending the two together to get the sounds.

This was my favorite movie of the year, the idea of the "spectacle" and fame and greed and hubris. What I LOVE about it, is that it denies you the final spectacle. You don't get to see the aftermath of the photo and video and the news crews showing up and all the deaths, you only see OJ on top of Lucky.

I think I actually liked this better then get out. I did watch this with friends which I think had I watched it alone u may have lost interest but by time I got to the end I was very happy to delve into the theme of it after with them which I think made it better. Which just shows how some movies spark different ideas within us

I adore this movie, but my mom is a horse person, I’m a huge animal person too, and my family is shot through with film buffs, so how could I not. It’s a great homage to Spielberg and (if I may don my tinfoil hat) to HP Lovecraft, which raises it in my estimation as well.

Interesting the perspective of trying to figure out why the mantis was on the camera and what it's role was in that moment...like the shoe. Can't make sense of it but I wonder if that matters when Jean jackets been eating livestock for who knows how long. Big picture. Peele is a genius with putting his perspective into film. People need to stop getting these chimpanzees as pets. Them things aren't a joke. They will mess you up.

I think the biggest part of this movie is the idea of spectacle over life. Gordy was put into a highly stressful environment for the idea of a live show and no one on hand that knew how to handle an animal of that caliber. OJ’s horse was stressed because the movie staff didn’t listen to OJ about stressed the horse gets and only see him as what I would call a “live prop” and not an animal. Jupe keeps feeding this beast for a spectacle to behold, but it backfires because he doesn’t try to understand it and rather profit off of it. The TMZ guy focused on getting footage of this beast, rather than value his own life and listening to OJ in how to save his life. Finally after this well thought of plan and getting a shot of Jean Jacket, Antler falls victim to a director wanting another “take” to say the least. Without ever thinking of how he would get the film back to people. The only person that seems to tame it is OJ (personal head canon) because it’s meant to reflect the Gordy situation and Jupe being the one that survived and got extra famous for it.

Jordan Peele always has an underlying theme in his films. When you look at the film in terms of how media is consumed by almost everyone now and horrific events are monetized, the random moments in the movie become a lot more interconnected. From the cameraman dying to get the perfect capture, the TMZ guy being so obsessed to get his story that he refuses help, to the ultimate tragedy of Jupe, it is quite the statement. Even though adult Jupe was clearly traumatized by Gordy’s rampage, he has still found a way to capitalize on this tragedy. He also didn’t learn to respect animals and realize that you can never truly control a wild animal, and his consistent blindness and need to chase the spotlight, even after surviving Gordy’s rampage, is the most tragic of all.

In the marketing for this movie, only one promo art showed Jean Jacket, and it was over Jupes head so it looked like a hat.

The way I see it, there's at least two layers to Nope. On the surface, it's about trying to tame and exploit creatures that ought to be left alone, whether it's chimpanzees, or temperamental horses, or an alien. Underneath that, Gordy and Jean Jacket are symbols/metaphors of trauma, and the movie is about the exploitation of traumatic events for entertainment and profit, and about who owns those stories. Jupe was never ALLOWED to deal with his trauma in a healthy way. It was taken out of his hands immediately, turned into a spectacle like he said, and even turned into a joke on SNL and MAD magazine. He had no choice but to accept it. And Mary Jo had no choice, either. She had no choice when Jupe continued that trend, too. Jean Jacket is OJ and Em's trauma, their father's death. That was taken away from them by Jupe, who KNEW that their father died under strange circumstances, and wasn't an idiot-- he could have put the pieces together and figured out that Jean Jacket was responsible, and yet he did exactly what was done to him and tried to make a spectacle of it, without the input of the people who were affected by it the most. And that all loops back to the very beginning, too. Everybody knows the cool little factoid about the first movie ever shot, but nobody knows who rode the horse. Nobody knows who made it happen. Their whole family's business from that point forward has been a struggle to maintain ownership of their work, and that's why the whole speech is so important to them. Ownership over your own work is kind of a half-layer to the meaning of the movie. As always, there's far more to Peele's writing than just the story itself.
