Q: Why is the video in TWO Parts?
A: Copyright reasons. I can show more of the movie to you guys within multiple parts. Depending on the movie I might do THREE parts or sometimes just ONE.
Q: Why is a small portion of the video completely muted?
A: Copyright reasons. Sometimes I get hit with copyright claims AFTER the video has already been posted, my only choice is to refute the claim but if RU-vid denies it, I have to either take down the video or mute the small portion they are claiming. If the video has been up for a while, it is much easier for me to mute this small portion in the YT studio and then unmute it months later after people aren't watching the video as much.

22:30 Technically, Katniss shouldn’t know how to swim. Most tributes/victors shouldn’t. Few districts have bodies of water deep enough for swimming. Katniss learned because her father snuck her outside district boundaries to teach her to hunt, swim, forage, and survive. Finnick is from district 4, the fishing district by the ocean, so he’s best in water and wields a trident. This arena was chosen because he’s the favorite in the capitol, and they wanted him to win. See, victors are often pimped out to capitol citizens (their friends and families are killed if they refuse), and he’s the most requested victor. Johanna refused, and that’s why she says “there’s no one left I love.”

This! Also idk if anyone else noticed, but Katniss was surrounded by careers when on the pods at start of the games. She had Brutus on her left, D1 woman on her right.

Actually, this arena wasn’t chosen for Finnick. In the books Plutarch says how “arenas aren’t build in one year” and later he states how when he danced with Katniss he had no idea she was gonna be a tribute again due to the quell. The quell wasn’t originally going to be victors. I think there’s a chance it might have been adults instead of teens since the arena was so difficult

For anyone who was curious, the Quarter Quells are always "Special": 25th - The tributes are elected by the district citizens, not chosen by lottery. 50th - Twice as many tributes (2 boys, 2 girls) from every district. Haymitch won that year. Someone made a fun short film on YT about it! 75th - Tributes pulled from existing pool of victors.

About the swimming part, Katniss does state in the books that is a not a skill many people have and she is an exception, her father teaches her how to swim in a lake when she is a kid.

I really appreciated that the film gives you the clue that Katniss can swim when you see her hunting by the lake in the opening sequence. So none book readers can work it out, even though they don't make it explicitly clear. That's why Peeta is struggling - unlike Katniss, he's never been outside the boundaries of D12 before their first games, so he can't swim.

I think my favorite thing about this is how hindsight is really 20/20, specifically with Plutarch. All of the suggestions he was giving snow to try and "inspire fear" was really to make the districts more angry and eventually spark a revolution. It's really genius writing.

Great reaction! Joanna's line of "there's no one left that I love" is pretty tragic. In the books it explains how she played innocent and weak during her Games, then absolutely wrecked everyone in the arena. Capital folks who put large bids on the other tributes were pissed at Joanna, so Snow ruined her life.

Peeta always has bread because he is the son of the baker family of the district, which is also why he was able to throw that burned bread to her when she was starving and huddled up in the rain, which we saw a flashback of in the first movie. That is also why Katniss talked about him being strong, and having seen him throw around huge sacks of flour as if it was nothing when they discussed each others strengths with Haymitch in the first movie. And lastly that is why he knew how to do the camouflage so well - he used to decorate the cakes in the bakery back home, which was also explained in the first movie. Just so you have an idea of all of that going forward as you seemed confused by this 😊

See that's one thing that always confused me. 12 was very poor. Peeta was from one of the better off families but still nothing like the capital or the districts closer to the capital. So who the f is ordering intricately decorated cakes in 12? How did he learn more than the basics?

@@sarah4hp haha yea in the book if I remember right there were a few families like the mayor and peeta's and stuff that did comparatively well. I don't know. Maybe cake decorating was just fun for him and he was really bored so he went hard on it or maybe I shouldn't think about how expensive cake decorating is today because it's a different society so maybe it was just kinda common? Still seems weird. XD That small detail always jumped out at me though as nonsense when everything else made sense

@@MinReiSakato they weren't actually well off at all. That's why he was beaten for burning the bread. In the movie he just gets scolded and his mom just slaps him behind the head. It's told that even though they weren't at risk of starving they weren't well off at all. He says he doesn't even know what the cakes he decorated taste like. And his family never ate them, only the misshapen bread. That's why his father bought Katniss squirrels. They lived very frugally. What they made was sold to the mayor's house hold, mostly for the peacekeepers, haymitch etc. No one else in district twelve could afford it. But it doesn't change that it was enough clientèle. So they lived more than frugally even poorly not like what you imagine middle class would, just not dirt poor like the rest.

7:45 you have to remember, in this kind of world, the Capitol keeps the districts in line and oppressed by using the games to enforce the idea that the districts are in opposition to one another, any speech or thoughts that help the districts see that they are the same only could help them unite them against the Capitol. That’s why it was dangerous to Snow what she said about Rue.

The painting of rue on the floor was done by Peeta, it was to show what they were doing to poor innocent children and to show katniss what they’re fighting for. The movies made some of those victors seems like killers who don’t care and giving katniss death stares but in the books during the training parts they were friendlier and she got to talk to all of them and they would all help each other out a bit, but here they just made them show off then stare at Katniss menacingly, because obviously none of these people want to be in the games again none of them were enjoying it The question you asked about swimming, actually most of the tributes can’t swim because they were never taught. Katniss could swim and so could finnick since he was from the fishing district with a lot of water Also Effie is weird but I think it’s more like she’s been desensitised and the district 12 victors who she’s in charge of always die so she tries not to get close to them, she’s nice it’s just she’s a little out of it I’d say. And they made the who,w love triangle a bigger thing in the movies that it was… like tbh no one really cares about that it’s never really been Gale

Definitely fair. Rue kept Katniss alive for days while she was unconscious, thresh spared her… I respected they acknowledged how much help they got winning.

Yes, you can win without killing someone. Annie, who is in the later films (and briefly in this one, since Mags volunteers to take her place), won because the arena was flooded and she was the best swimmer. Of course she had psychological problems anyway. But it's fairly typical for the victors to have PTSD, like Haymitch who self-medicated with alcohol, or the "Morphlings" who self medicated with drugs.

Everybody is explaining how Katniss's dad taught her to swim but I haven't seen anybody mention that her namesake the Katniss plant, which her dad chose, is a water plant she'd have to swim to collect, they grow small potatoes or something to that degree. Her dad knew teaching her to collect them could keep the family from starving. Represents how even down to her name and skillset every part of this character lines up and is so clearly thought out and deliberately crafted. God bless Suzanne Collins.

It brings me so much joy seeing someone react to this film/franchise for the very first without having read the books. Though, definitely read/listen to the books. I LOVE Catching Fire. I remember watching it several times in the theatre when it came out. It's such a great sequel and the themes in the books and films provide a cautionary tale for any society that is headed towards oligarchy. (Looking at you America.) I can't wait for you to watch Mockingjay (Pts. 1 and 2). 👍🏽

Regarding Peeta’s and Katniss’s feelings for each other. What Peeta felt for Katniss was a long standing crush. In the books, it’s mentioned that Peeta’s dad had a thing for Katniss’s mom. Peeta’s dad even tells Peeta this. Peeta would see how happy Katniss’s parents were together and thought that if he dated Katniss (the daughter of this happy couple) that he too would be this happy. Katniss originally only ever felt a debt owed to Peeta for the bread. In the books, she talks about a kiss that she shares with Peeta saying that it’s the first one that leaves her wanting more, and that it makes her feel something in her chest. Katniss, however, has not begun to realize she has feelings for Peeta yet. She has a lot of distractions keeping her from thinking about it. However, you should notice how President Snow tells her to “convince him” that she loves Peeta. Because he wants to use that against her. (Remember that he kills loved ones to get people to do what he wants) Peeta, although he says he loves Katniss, really only is focused on the fact that Katniss came to his rescue in the games. He sees her as his own heroine. She nursed him to health, fed him, etc. but he doesn’t 100% know Katniss. Which is why he tells her they should get to know each other when he proposes the idea of being friends when they’re in the train. If anything, Peeta doesn’t completely love Katniss until the last movie. Because at that point, he knows her 100%. The good and the bad. While Katniss spent all these movies falling in love with him, but not being honest to herself about it. Starting from those nights in the cave.

So a subtext Ive noticed from both book and movie that no one ever notices. Fenick in the later books says the "capital kills the ones you love" if you don't obey and Joanna says specifically in both "there's no one left I love"

Every quarter quell there was something different with the games. The 25th, the district had to elect the tributes, the 50th, it was double the amount of tributes (its also the one Haymitch won) and now the 75th, existing victors.. Haymitch won his by using the forcefield to kill his last opponent. The capitol hated that they "kinda helped" and killed his girlfriend and his family. That's why he's a alcoholic. Along with watching 2 kids from his district die every year he's mentoring for 25 years straight

Catching Fire is definitely my favorite, both of the films and the books! I always felt like the first one was mostly exposition and setting the stage for this one and the rest. They have more room to flesh out the characters rather than spending so much time world building, and I think it really shows; they're focusing on more characters but they all have more depth.

District 13 is mentioned in the movie to build the lore surrounding it. At first it's kind of mythic,if I recall right Gale and Katniss think about running away in that direction. But one very clear mention is when Snow threatens Katniss and says he'll destroy district 12 like he did District 13.

Abour them picking up the bodies after: it's stated in the books that they didn't do that when the hunger games were just starting out, but then one year a tribute was eating the corpses so they started taking them away

Fun fact: The trippy building interior shown in the pan-up at 14:36 and during the elevator scene at 16:16 (where Johanna removes her clothing) were shot at an actual hotel in Atlanta - the Marriott Marquis. Parts of the Loki series were filmed there, too. It’s actually one of the host buildings for Atlanta’s huge (and AWESOME) annual sci-fi/fantasy/general geekdom convention, DragonCon! 🐲

Interesting comment about the swimming part. In the book, I remember they had this belt that was supposed to keep them afloat so they could rely on that if they were not a swimmer. At one point, Katniss and her group used those same belts as shields during a surge and it would throw out this goo when punctured. As mentioned, Peeta was also the one who painted that Rue portrait for his skill, and after Katniss went, they ended up getting the highest scores for their skills. That was only to make them more of a target to the other Victors/Tributes. This was a fantastic sequel. Awesome reaction! For Mockingjay, the book itself was not long, at least not for a two part movie. However, part 1 does a great job in showing the perspective of both good guys and bad guys. Part 2 was too faithful to the book, which is very rare from book to movie lol.

I was laughing so much at 12:47!!! Kick ass movie solidified Jlaw as a superstar and the biggest money making actor, that's how historic it was too. It's funny how in the first books and films finnick is very much hated but in the latter parts he ends up as the the most likeable and the favorite character, both in the books and in the films. The best character, imo.

The third movie is great, it’s just not as action-y or romantic as the rest. It’s more drama/thriller based. It goes into wartime ethics. Still amazing and underrated! Probably my favorite.

The reason for allies during this games is obviously different but the reason for allies in the previous games is that it keeps you alive. Every ally you have is one less person that might be trying to kill you. Makes it so that there’s at least one person on watch the whole time so you don’t have to result in suffering from sleep deprivation in order to make sure you don’t get killed in your sleep. It does require a lot of trust but it’s harder to kill someone that you’ve been allied with because you get to know them.

You can technically win without killing, Finnick's girlfriend Annie survived because the arena flooded and she could swim better than anyone else since she was from the fishing district.

About the drink to make you vomit... I'm fairly certain that's a nod to the Romans, who had that custom at their own lavish parties. They'd like vomit and then eat more, and if I'm not mistaken it was considered to be a complement to the food. Either way, contrasting that act in the capitol with the districts... its especially vile.

Im probably in the minority but I'm so glad this movie wasn't 2 movies (like everyone preferred because naturally post games victory tour and the quarter quell are naturally each half of the story) and they decided to cut the Mockingjay in half. After this movie they were building the story so well and the pacing of the story was amazing. If they cut it in half it wouldn't be as satisfying if the 2nd movie ended up with Katniss being reaped again.
