This video takes a look at Fisher-Price's Movie Viewer (1973) and Movie Viewer Theater (1978). After showing the items I play five movie cartridges; four on the screen and one using the projection function, though the projection has a bit of a lighting issue:
12:20 - Bugs Bunny in the Lions' Den
14:17 - On My Way to Sesame Street
15:54 - Mickey's Trailer
17:24 - Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too
19:53 - The Rescuers
Check out the blog for photos, including a look inside the Movie Viewer Theater: www.vault1541....

For a few dollars these are pretty cool. I never even knew something like this existed. I can imagine how fascinating these things were back when they first came out, especially in the age where the VCR was brand new and extremely expensive (I don't know much about the VTR but I don't think tons of families had those). Another great video. I'm learning a lot by watching these.

I was born in 1976 and used to have the movie viewer as a child growing up in the late 70s and early 80s. It was one of my favorite toys. I never had the movie theater one. I used to have the mickey mouse lonesome ghosts, on my way to sesame street, and bugs bunny in the lion's den cartridges and I used to play those ones again and again frontwards and backwards and it was a lot of fun. Only thing was that the crank was super noisy when you turned it. It put the viewmaster to shame!

'The Rescuers' was one of my favourite Disney movies and I remember seeing it as a child in a theatre with my parents and sisters back in 1977. I also had the Disney records of the story and loved the songs too which incidentally are available on 'The Rescuers Down Under' soundtrack (just three or four songs as bonus material). It's too bad Disney never released an official 'The Rescuers' soundtrack which in addition to the songs sung by Shelby Flint, had a great instrumental score composed by Artie Butler.

I got the FP Movie Viewer Theater along with some six cartridges (Cookie Monster, The Pink Panther, Mickey's The Valiant Little Tailor, Sylvester & Tweety, The Rescuers and more). I was 11 or 12 and my younger siblings were 4 and 3, so I would project the movies for them, and they loved them so much. Oh, I still have the whole thing, box and all, and it still works just fine. Durable toys indeed!

Glad I stumbled onto this video. I vaguely remember having a toy like this when I was 4 years old, but my memory is hazy, and I wasn’t quite sure if I remembered it correctly. Nice to have my memory validated by this video. My toy was a bit different, though; I seem to remember mine being made of clear plastic, and it was battery-powered instead of hand-cranked.

I was born in 1987, but I remembered my parents picking me up the movie theater toy from a garage sale, probably around 1994 or so. I remember the only cartridge that worked was Mickey and the Giant. There was a Sesame Street cartridge that kind of worked? But not really. My kids were watching Mickey and the Giant on Disney+ yesterday and I had a visceral reaction to it and suddenly remembered watching that cartoon on a tiny screen with no sound and a light bulb (that got very hot iirc) in my darkened play room.

@Khay McBride yeah I got it off Ebay with 4 really old movies... the one I really remembered was the sesame street numbers one and the guy falling down the stairs and me replaying it forwards and back. Anyway I gave it to my husband for XMAS and when he popped a movie in and heald it up to the light my 3 teenagers just stopped opening gifts and looked at him with awe. I told them it was an old school iPhone. They thought it was really cool. They showed their friends when they came over. Some things just withstand time and imaginations I guess.

It doesn't ring a bell. Most of the cartridges FP released feature licensed characters, you can see a full list on this website: thisoldtoy.com/fisher-price/dept-1-Audio-Vis-Mus/f-movie-viewer/a-index.html#8326.

@Vault1541 3 года назад
It is called a cartridge, at least that's the wording used on the packaging so search for "Fisher Price Movie Viewer Cartridge" and you should get plenty of results. I'm not sure what I said was generic without re-watching. Was it in regards to the newer version of it where the only titles are about letters and numbers rather than licensed characters? Also, you can check out of the blog entry for a closer look at the cartridge packaging (and other photos) here: www.vault1541.com/2019/02/youtube-fisher-price-movie-viewer.html.

I tend to look at recent eBay sales to get an idea of what something might cost or sell for. There are often extremes that I'm never sure are accurate but for the most part, I'd say a used theater in good condition with no tapes or box is around $30. The box tends to double (or more) the value of old toys, especially if they are sealed. Most of the tapes appear to be a few dollars each.

Collectors of vintage toys might like to check this out. tinyurl.com/76pd5ttk This is a battery-operated 8mm cartridge player that took the (kiddie) world by storm. In the late 70s, this handheld player once sent Asian kids in frantic search for their favourite film cartridges. Among the titles that came out were the usual superhero cartoons (Hulk, Spider-Man) and quite a few Japanese children's favourites such as the tokusatsu (Japanese for special effects) series.

Nice! I’m not a fan of Fisher Price movie viewer. I remember since I was a kid, I used to play around all the time. They had “The Lion’s Den” with Bugs Bunny, and a few selections. These were great. If I can get more of these, I have to take the cartridge apart, and mount it onto a 3” reel, but I have a few 3” takeup reels that I have to use, so I can run it on my GAF 3000S Super 8 Sound Movie Projector just for fun. About 2 years ago, I got a “Lonesome Ghosts” Fisher Price Movie Viewer Cartridge, I took it apart, cut the film out, and mount onto a reel, and it runs well, and it’s rapid fast, so I have to slow it down to 18 FPS to make it better.

One of the early comments pointed out that they are Super 8 mm film. I'm not sure what that means as far as the material but I guess it was the same as the camera film? Here is a quote from a science website in relation to real cameras: "Super 8 film was made using Kodachrome, a type of color reversal film that was manufactured by Kodak from 1935 to 2006. The color was used in motion picture cameras as well as still cameras, especially for images intended for publication in print media."

I've sold old items on eBay and I try to use recent sales as guidelines but some sellers get a lot more than others so it's really hard to say. Auctions tend to be very hit or miss too. It looks like the theater alone is currently selling in the $30 range while cartridges maybe get $10-20 each when sold individually. However there is one recent sale with the theater, seven cartridges, and the theater box for about $40. Most sellers are asking $70+ for the theater with box and of course box condition is important.

I'm not entirely certain but I think in many cases the cartridges have clips from an already made movie/cartoon rather than being something wholly original. I found an article of someone doing animation analysis with the toy here: sundriftproductions.com/index.php/tag/fisher-price-movie-viewer. They are looking at Pinocchio and state "...the films inside the Movie Viewer cartridges are not exactly the same animation from the original source material; silent Super 8 film usually runs at 18 frames a second, not 24 frames per second like theatrically-produced animation." As another comment on this video mentions, these toys contain Super 8 film. The article also mentions that the Fisher-Price Pinocchio cartridge has footage from early in the Disney film.

Could it be possible to make home movies like family vacations and stuff like that?

I guess if you made a super 8 film you could wrap it inside a Fisher-Price cassette but of course there would be no audio.

There must be much more advanced viewers you can purchase that expect would be a better choice. As you can see in the video these tapes and the toy itself have no audio functions. I'm certainly not an expert but it looks like it's basically a light bulb and some mirrors. Not sure how much they'll help but I did post pictures of the inside on the blog: www.vault1541.com/2019/02/youtube-fisher-price-movie-viewer.html.

Do the old cartridges still fit the new projector toy?
@Vault1541
@Vault1541 4 года назад
I'm afraid I don't have any first-hand experience with the 2014 version but online comments suggest the old cartridges are compatible. Fisher-Price's classic toys line appears to all use the original molds so the items should be close to identical.
