You know a rod brand sucks when there haveing to cut the tip off to get it how he likes it. Favorite rods are over priced crap. They are hyped up by all these 13 year old kids. The googan squad is the ones who own them. These pro fisherman just use whatever company offers the best contract. It goes to the highest bid. They dont care if they suck because they can catch fish on any rod. But they want the money. But favorite rods are more than 2× what there worth
i have a PENN battle combo salt water with i think 65 test braid. using a heavy plug in a lake, i can launch that sucker a country mile. i dont have many poles, but i like that on lakes
Like most of us watching a master at his craft I'm in awe. I have been in the airline business since 1980, have been with three different carriers and have probably forgotten more than I remember when mentoring and coaching newbies on safety and procedure, I'm sure it's the same with Roland! But i'll take what ever info he has and know I'm better for it. Thanks a million my man.
@Roland Martin Outdoors you are the man that got me into fishing. Following you and your son Scott. You have shared some great sneaky tricks and genius tips
I love the fact one of Rolands favorite rods has a cut tip because I accidentally broke the tip off one of my rods and since then it has actually been one of my favorites! It’s something I’m often too embarrassed to tell anyone but I feel like the tension is better when setting the hook!
Mr Martin. I've been watching you since I was a child and I recently discovered the you tube channel. I really enjoy yours and your sons videos almond with Bill Dance and all you Ol' Timers from Saturday and Sunday morning tv shows and the bass masters. Ha!!! Thank you for sharing the wise knowledge and stories with the world even more with this you tube. Ha!!!! The video of you and your son Scott getting the boat stuck in the everglades is a classic. Ha!!!
I lived in Hawaii 3 years (Father USAF) I was age 9 and we used steel leaders catching 4'+ hammerhead sharks in a channel between Hickham AFB & Eva Beach where we lived. It seemed everything over there had huge teeth Roland~! Hope You go sometime & thanks for your time & patience & for another video packed with awesome information to be a more successful fisherman~! P.S. I can hear your wife screaming at you that you're going to ruin your teeth by pulling & cutting that fishing line! :-)
Thanks Roland I love the fact your on RU-vid. Keep bringing those tips. I had to jump off this other channel, I think it was SMC, that guy always changes the rules but he does catch fish.
I'm a new fisherman. I frog fish 30lb braided line with 50lb mono leader because of pike. What's the best line leader setup for fishing bass and pike so I don't get bit off?
I just started using braid this yr, very very helpful video thank you so much Mr. Martin. I started on Scott's channel and seen your gator and found out you started a channel. Love it my to favorite fisherman to watch,
also a question for you about braid actually 2. 1st how often should I change braid? 2nd what's your recommendation on backing mono or floro what size?
+Albert Harris I know I'm not Roland, but as far as backing is concerned, save your money and buy the cheapest mono you can. If you're trying to save the most amount of money on braid having similar diameter line can help, if not it really doesn't matter. This is of course pertaining to freshwater fishing and not salt.
When I was young and mostly a catfish, brim and crappie fisherman, my dad always told me to use lite strength line so when I got hung up I could just point my rod where I was hung up, pull straight back and break the line. I could catch a 20lb channel cat on 6lbs test with the drag set right. Made for a long fight landing one like this on lite line. Now I try to bass fish some and I understand using 65lb braid to rip through reeds and light grass. But what do you do if you get hung on an underwater log, rocks or something braid won’t rip through? Will the plugs come loose a lot of times, break, or can you do damage to your reel trying to pull loose?
Roland, you recently advised me to make my fluoro leaders 2 feet long, yet in this video, youi twice mentioned that leaders should be 7-8' long - so please expound upon this. THANK YOU!
Hey Roland, you are my favorite fishing legend & hero for as long as I can remember. You got me using the polymer knot 30 years ago and still using it today. I've recently been using double uni knot and watching your instructions tying it made it easy... I always used a barrel swivel in the past, but it won't pass through the guides. I was just using the uni knot, braid to leader, then a bit of superglue and it works like a dream through the guides! Thank you for all the years of entertainment and a life time of great knowledge to the sport. Is there any chance you'll be adding links to the items in future videos? Specifically the bass pro casting reel at the beginning with the 8:1 ratio? I want to get into the casting reels using braid, but I want to minimize backlash to zero. I used them in the past with mono & backlashes were a problem.
Ok y'all let's take a vote here... who's got the most extreme nut huggers? Roland Martin or Tommy Biffle? May he with the shortest shorts win! LOL! And... GO!
Listening to Roland Martin, reinforces technics. End result is I have more confidence. Afterall if it's good enough for him, it's definitely good enough for me.
My setups are pretty much identical. The only rods I don't have braid on is my shallow/medium crank bait setup and my light worm, jig rod for weightless and finesse bait casting stuff. I go with flouro on those.
Thanks. I use both knots. What line do you use for jig fishing?? Been using 50lb braid tieing a Flurocarbon liter of co-polymer liter. I used to go straight braid an I really can't tell any difference in the Okla lakes I fish.
Great to see you with your own RU-vid channel. I think you will enjoy sharing your vast knowledge over time. For myself personally I use a triple surgeon knot for braid to fluro but to each their own. Hopefully in the future you will include your fellow Fishing Legends in some of your videos. Referring to Bill and Jimmy Thanks Roland for sharing.
I don't use the double uni knot for leaders anymore. It was the first knot I learned as far as tying a leader to braided line but I found that the finished knot was a little big and that made it have difficulty passing through casting rod guides at times, especially if you want to use a longer leader where the junction knot is back into the spool. It's not so bad if you use a shorter leader where the knot itself ends up in within the guides of the rod when you've got the lure reeled up to make a cast. That's why I made the switch and started tying the *Alberto* knot pretty much 100% of the time. It's basically a modified or improved albright knot. On almost all of my casting rods because my frogging or punching rods, I will use a fluorocarbon leader of varying length. I just like having that sensitivity of braid on my moving baits like spinnerbaits, square bills, flukes & swimbaits, and I can just tie on a leader to whatever length I want and still not have to worry about fish being line shy. The alberto knot is great because of how small and compact it is when finished. It's definitely smaller than the double uni knot, but it's also great because it will not slip at all which means you can trim the tag ends completely flush with the knot AND the knot is just as strong as the double uni knot, possibly even stronger. It's a truly great knot. The double uni knot will get the job done too though. Nothing wrong with it. There's plenty of knots you can use for tying a leader. You can tie a uni knot on one side, and an improved clinch on the other as well. You can tie a blood knot. Or you can learn how to tie the FG knot, which is a much more advanced knot but probably the best main line to leader knot out there. It's just much more involved to tie.
Hey Roland, can you make a Florida tip video with all the colors, baits, and tactics that you use throughout the different seasons. I fish the Kissimmee chain and would appreciate any advice.
Thank you mr. martin ive followed your instructions since i was a kid receiving a Roland martin tackle box with lures watched you on tv every sat morning instead of cartoons i would never be the fisherman i am today thank you sir
