@Noah-vj9vy

But there are still a bunch of applications that call for a spinning reel. I love frogging and jigging and fishing worms and moving baits on casting equipment, but I would never leave home without my finesse gear on spinning tackle!
@ronin0096

Dedications4U what is the difference in casting or reeling between the two? I've always used and nice Mitchell spining reel, and and don't know why that could put me at a disadvantage. Casting further? Maybe,

If your new to baitcasters like I am, watch this video more than once and use the tape trick for sure, I was ready to throw my rig till I tried with the tape. The tape trick will allow you to practice casting rather than spending so much time trying to respool the line. If you use the trick and your patient you will get better, I am not good at it yet but I know I can learn it now using Gene's tips. I was casting from my canoe yesterday with tape in place, then removed the tape and only had to deal with small backlash, I will get better.

I find all of your videos very helpful. I'm 73 years old and been fishing all my life fresh water and salt. I recently began devoting more time to fresh water because I feel it offers more challenges . One challenge being the bait casting reel. Your video makes it perfectly understandable. I do have one question. Do you or any subscriber know where to fish for mermaids? For me they have been very elusive. LOL

Gotta say, I've avoided baitcasters my entire life, I always ended up spending more time fixing bird nests than fishing. After watching this, I was able to spend a part of the afternoon working out all the issues I've always had with them. I'm by no means perfect but I can at least spend the day fishing and not fixing the spool. His beginner tackle video is outstanding as well.

Just got my first bait caster today! Literally went on amazon and got one of the cheapest they had. It’s a 6’6” Shakespeare Alpha medium action combo. Picked it up for $35. Your videos are definitely helping me learn to cast it! Set it up and practiced for about 30 minutes or so with only a couple minor back lashes. Really enjoy the videos! They’ve helped me tremendously.

The Spool Tension Control Knob is the single most important braking control of the three until you learn how to use your thumb...
@donsgotmoney
@donsgotmoney 6 лет назад
Gene, as far as removing the birdnest from over run, if you place your thumb on the spool while cranking the handle and applying medium pressure to the spool, make a couple of turns, then hit the spool release button and pull out the line, do this over a couple of times and you will master the birdnest. I have been using a baitcaster for 20 years and still manage to get overun, even with a magnetic brake.. Once I learned this simple trick of removing the backlash,,,it was even more enjoyable....Thanks for the tips!!

Went fishing with a baitcaster for the first time today, used this and your older vid as resource material. It went great. Only been fishing for a week (haven't fished since I was 12, which was 25 years ago). The garage sale spinning reel I had was driving me crazy, so the g/f and I picked up combos at Dick's. Pulled a decent largemouth and a steelhead in the first couple hours. And I only bird-nested it on 12 of my first 20 casts! Got to watch a bass tease my g/f the entire time. Would snatch up bugs only a few feet from her frog, or inhale and immediately spit it out (there's probably a technical term for this). Every time she wanted to leave it it would do a majestic leap out of the water to lure her back into fishing for him. HOLY CRAP the fish caught my girlfriend. Anyway, yours were good starter vids.

What I use to practice with is a rubber LJ bouncing Bettys and you can get them in different weights. The cost of buying them I consider a learning/practice tool so I am less likely to loose far more expensive baits in the trees later. And hey you can even bounce them off of things. I liked starting off with 3/4 oz got the hang of it then went to 1/2 and 1/4 oz.

I haven't really used my bait casters since that 4 hour ordeal I went through getting out a particularly nasty backlash on my reel with the braided line haha. I managed to get the backlash out after about an 45 minutes but when I was trying to reel back in the line had tangled up on itself and then I spent quite the bit of time un-knotting probably 100 yards of braid that I didn't want to waist and cut off

The best baitcaster video I've seen. You really broke it down. I went out and purchased one last year(and it wasn't cheap) and it is sitting in my garage. After this video I will do some practicing. Although you did loose me on the electrical tape part.

@atlfisherman3413 7 лет назад
Ok, I watched the taping part again. It looks like you are saying the stickiness of the tape will stick to the line and help when casting. I will try that too now.
@MrTegidTathal
@MrTegidTathal 7 лет назад
No, he's taping the line down below one good cast so that if you birdsnest, it can't be half way down the reel. He's basically making only one cast worth of line (plus the 4 arm lengths of slack) as usable line each cast. If you fish with a leader, you shouldn't have to move it. If you don't use a leader, you'll have to move it as you trim down the line for new lures (you should have some slack. You'll know when to adjust it because the tape will stop your cast mid-flight.

So far I only had one big backlash on mono that went back to the tape on the spool, I had to cut it out. I spooled on 50 yards of braid and only have had one more big backlash, But I was able to just reel up my line and go home, at home(with the frustration passed) I was able to easily pick it out again. Use tape, cast heavier lures, don't try to cast far but smooth, cast across or with the wind, and all works well.

+megahertz XV I have better luck when it is brade 40 or 50 lb but fluorocarbon works to. The trick I have found is not to pull it till the backlash is tight keep it lose. Also a small crochet needle works well. And when all else fails get the clippers and learn how to tie a blood knot or double uni.
@williambutler4965
@williambutler4965 7 лет назад
I agree with the braid, but more in the fact that when you get a bad backlash on braid, you will not get it out. Great video! I have a request for a video. Post one showing some ways to get a really bad backlash out. I've had some good ones in the past and that would help a lot of people trying baitcasters out for their first time.I've used baitcasters for a while now and I still backlash after changing to heavier or lighter lures, forgetting to readjust my knobs.

One simple rule of a baitcasting reel. If your reel is backlashing during the cast adjust your magnetic or centrifugal brake. If its backlashing when your bait hits the water adjust your spool tension and use your thumb like Gene said.

Have you considered doing an advanced bait caster video that focuses on hand, wrist, arm and body positioning/movements. Traditional casting and side casting ? How its different than how you cast a spinning rod ? How have the new braking systems changed your technique ? Thanks for considering.

I still would rather fly fish over any other type. But I'm excited to get into bait casting! Thanks for the informative video!

I completely understand. I grew up with a fly rod in my hand.

Gene, would you say more about putting electrical tape on the spool of the reel to prevent major backlash. Thanks Zane

hey Gene, great vid but still confused about one thing -- what effect does lure weight have on setting your brakes, if any? As of now, I just set them in relation to wind speed and the spool tension/cast control knob, but does casting a heavier lure in general mean a higher brake setting than a lighter lure or vice versa?

Can you do a detailed video on skipping with a baitcaster? Like what your settings are and what you do with your thumb?

Can you do a video on when braid, mono, fluoro, has a place and time to be used? Reason being many videos seen only talk really about why but not truly when atleast in my opinion. But I want to use primarily braid for 90%-95% except for when using my spinning reels for ultra light fishing due to confidence reasons.

i enjoy my abu silver max and lew's medium heavy lightweight rod, fishing with that combo makes me feel like a pro. however when it's dark and i'm fishing damn near blind, i always fall back on my spinners. i'll get one of those fancy 13 fishing concept reels in the next year though. gotta master my 50 dollar abu first. been using 15 lb fluoro with good results after i burned though some 12 lb mono learning how to cast.

I usually add a bit more spool control ( magnets or pins) at night. It'll limit your distance a bit but you aren't usually going to be chucking for the horizon at night and it'll help keep bird nests away.

Coincidentally, casting with nicer reels is a lot easier than learning to cast with cheaper, lower quality reels like the Abu Garcia SilverMaxx (I had one too, it's not terrible but.....). The Daiwa Zillion TWS is on sale from $299 to $180 right now, it's one of my favorite reels and just picked up another 3 last week (one in each gear ratio). Daiwa's T-Wing System (TWS) makes casting an absolute dream
