Great fun Phil! I miss the bonito action we used to experience back in the 80s in King Harbor. Pound for pound bonito fight as hard as any fish in salt water…
I used to fish the breakwalls for bonita all the time when I was younger. Once I got swept off by a rogue wave. Lost two rods, my tackle box, my backpack, and when I was swimming to the surface, I realized I wasn't gonna make it unless I got my boots off, so I ripped my boots off and lost them. A boat came over and picked me up. Once I got in the boat, I got a standing ovation from the other fishermen on the breakwall. I took a bow.
Great content. Is there a size limit for Bonito in California? Thank you P.S. What type of hooks and size are those single hook replacement on the luck craft? Great Idea . Thank you again. Blessings and Happy Holidays.
Hi Alfredo. There is no size limit for Bonito. Here's the Department of Fish and Game rules for Bonito: (5) Pacific bonito: No more than 10 fillets of any length may be possessed. All bonito fillets possessed shall be considered a part of the allowable undersized tolerance of five bonito per day less than 24 inches fork length or weighing less than five pounds as provided in Section 28.32 of these regulations. I'm going to find out where to get the hooks, what the style hook is called, and what size for you. My friend is the one who introduced me to them. I will reply to you tomorrow with that info. Thank you for your support!👍
Hi Alfredo. Those single hook replacement are size 2. They're made specifically for that reason. Most larger tackle shops may have them. I got mine at The Longfin in Orange, CA.
Live bait hooks work too as long as you can get the eye through the split ring. I had a barracuda bend my treble and only had live bait hooks on me at the time, worked in a pinch and eventually limited out on bonitos on a party boat that day
