It's 10 years though, not a few months. PTSD is obviously a real and serious thing, but he didn't say it wasn't real or serious. He just said it's unrealistic for the character in the movie to behave and dream like that for a decade while still retaining every detail over that whole time period. The script could have been better if they put more thought into the motivations behind the main character instead of relying on a repeated dream sequence.

Fun fact there were plenty of darker scenes in this movie, but unfortunately got cut out of the movie because of movie ratings like, for instance, there was apparently going to be a scene where Vanessa as a child, would look at a dark room and hear screams of children as you can faintly see William Afton killing them

I think this movie was definitely meant to purposefully leave heaps of possibilities and doors open for the second film. My biggest wish for the second film is that they dive into the 80s more with William afton (and show more of his relationship with vanessa) if it’s a sequal (which it most likely will be) they could definitely use heaps of flashbacks.

Great review as always, but one critique is that we actually do know what happened to garret. He was killed by afton. That's it. Like not in a way that tied him to any of the animatronics, but apparently just as a murder in general. We know this because when we see the photo of Vanessa as a kid, she's holding garrets plane, presumably given to her by William as a gift. Then, when he's being attacked by afton, he says that he will kill him like he killed his brother.

Also, it would make more sense for Garret to be in the puppet animatronic and Mike's dad to represent Henry as that's the only way Aston would target garret people hate on the fan movie for one reasonable reason it wasn't a horror movie as it wasn't supposed to be it was a movie for the fans and most other things they say just make them sound dumb even though with other movies and TV shows they sound like they know what they are talking about

@@kadenhorrocks7182 Yeah, there are a few puzzle pieces to link what we already know in the games with what we see in the movie. Such as Garret being THE first one to get killed, particularly in an incident involving a car (Just like Charlotte), or the credits of the movie having 2 references to FNaF 2, the Puppet's music box, alongside the distorted voice spelling out words letter by letter. Specifically "Come find me", as if that message is directed towards not just the audience, but also Mike. At the very least, it's confirmed that Garret died, and *maybe* those hints are just red herrings to point the viewers in the wrong direction.

I'm pretty sure that the scene with the hand reaching out of the animatronic's mouth is a reference to multiple fan-made creepy-pasta videos, most notably "audio_recognition.mp4 [FNaF/VHS]" which still gives me chills every time I revisit it. It's a great concept when it's the ghostly-pale hand of a murder victim who believes that they can still be rescued, but when it's a fleshy hand belonging to a giggling child with murderous intent... yeah, I agree that it's corny.

@@user-ve3zs4nv8h That's fair, the kids could have conflicting feelings that cause them to lash out violently or crave sadistic entertainment even if they're ultimately victims. As you said, the suits could also have personalities that combined with theirs. When I said "believe they can be rescued", I more so meant that they hated hurting people and wanted to be saved from their curse; that they were reaching their hands out as one would if they were trapped under rubble after an earthquake. I also tend to view them as spirits who grew up in animatronic suits rather than being perpetually adolescent. Generally speaking, I've always enjoyed the more tragic implications of the FNAF story more than it's horror and thrills, and even though I haven't seen the movie it seems that Scott and Blumhouse didn't want to go in that direction; probably because it would be depressing.

I saw the fnaf movie with my son and we really enjoyed it. An R-rating could have made it creepier or more intense but I understand they were targeting younger teens as well as longtime fans; it didn't ruin the experience for me and an okay PG horror movie gives me something I can actually watch with my kids... that's the most important thing in my opinion. Also a few counter points I thought I'd bring up: 1. What Mike was doing is loosely based on the concept of lucid dreaming, where you can control and interact with your dreams in a very deliberate way. I have done this on a few occasions, and they say you can train yourself to become better at it over time. So it's really not that far fetched, nor is it unreasonable to think that a desperate person would cling to any hope they could. 2. I don't understand why people seem to think trauma just magically disappears over the course of a few years or even decades. I know people who had just 1 horrible experience and it has lasted a lifetime of pain. I know it's just a movie, but I think our perception of how people deal with trauma and the timeline for recovery is incredibly skewed. My uncle drank and did drugs until it claimed his life, and it was all because he lost his older brother when they were young. 3. Why wouldn't Afton know the last name of his first victim? It probably made news coverage and clearly there is some connection between the families even if they don't spell it out blatantly (I assume Mike's dad worked with Afton and it will be a plot point of the 2nd movie). 4. Age gaps between siblings isn't that uncommon, my brother and I are 12 years apart and my wife's sister is almost 13 years older than her. My parents are in their 50's now and my bro is in his early 20s, so the gap between Mike's sister and him isn't really all that unbelievable. Especially if you consider the idea that his parents may have had another child in an attempt to try and fill the void of his brother, happens more than you think. 5. That cupcake was hilarious!

This was crazy I was hyped for the movie but it's just low tier to mid at best. Definitely over hyped. Knowhere as good as it could have been. Makes me wonder if she's gonna become e vanny and take over for afton at the end of trilogy or she is gonna be in coma till 3rd movie and come save the day. I hope they add to her character and make her interesting if they keep her. Gonna need more actual horror in the next ones. My thoughts exactly. Honestly 99% of my criticisms of the film disappear if Vanessa's character just... wasn't in it. The actress was great, she was cast perfectly - its just that the character genuinely served no purpose but to be a generic female lead who somehow knows all the exposition and does the whole horror trope "You gotta get out of here but I'm not gonna tell you why because spooky!" She didn't singlehandedly wreck the film for me, still enjoyed it, but it would have improved massively without that extra character is all I'm saying.

Why is Vanessa, a character that is in game 8, in the first movie? They portray Mike as a stupid, violent, unhinged loser. They portray Vanessa as a bossy miss-know-it-all (Aka a Mary Sue). She has to show up and explain everything because Mike (and the audience) can't figure anything out for themselves. Only Vanessa is smart...she knows the backstory of the pizzeria and how to control the animatronics. It's very annoying and she should not even be in the first movie as in the actual games she is a very minor character that doesn't come in until way later.

To explain a bit better for the people in this reply section, this lore is completely different than the games. Similar to spider man and there being multiple universes. As for Vanessa, she’s a stand in for the Afton kids. They’re trying to keep the story simple by combining characters. As for her being a “marry sue” um… no??? She literally gets stabbed lol. She’s an established character in the games and serves an actual purpose in the movie. She’s used to her father’s shit and is basically used to people like Mike but when she meets him and his family she actually wants to help but can’t because her dad will LITERALLY kill her.💀so she drops hints to him.

Yeah. I wish they catered towards the older FNAF fans who grew up with the games and had just made a gore-fest hard horror movie. Removing the FNAF aspect of the movie, I would classify it as a horror entrance, which is mainly for kids just getting into the horror genre. It was cute, and I think I liked it a bit more than Elvis, but overall I agree with him that it was mid, and agreed with all the things he said were stupid about the movie. Anyway, if I could change one thing about the movie, keeping it PG13, then I'd just take out the dream part of it. Something about seeing the dead kids faces and having them speak casually ruined the mood. That or I'd blur their faces, dehumanizing them in sense and in turn making them moreso connected to their animatic selves, plus it would have been creepy.
@NCozy
@NCozy 6 месяцев назад
I don't think gore is what the movie needed tbh. I think the movie could've easily been scarier even without it, but I don't think they were even trying to be. A lot of that is just the inconsistent tone, I don't mind the fort scene but a scene like that should be in the beginning of the movie when the stakes are low and not when we've already seen them kill people. They never tried to play into the claustrophobia or the setting for the horror. There's a scene where they trash the place and I was thinking to myself ok they're upping the stakes now he has to survive in the pizzeria but there's broken glass everywhere and it's all messed up but he cleans it up immediately and the scene right after completely deescalated any tension they built up to that point.

I don't think the criticism of Mike still being grief stricken was all that fair, he explains in the movie that he also lost his parents because they couldn't get over the grief. He has a difficult time supporting himself and his sister because he basically has no family left except his crazy aunt. I don't think this movie was perfect or anything but for what it was I thought they did a good job. This movie is way more entertaining than most horror movies coming out today, and better written. The set was great, the animatronics were practical, and I honestly thought Josh Hutcherson did a great job, he really sold his character well and his passion made me like Mike a lot more than I think I would have if someone else took the reins. The plot has its issues but I was really drawn in by Mike as a character and I think the movie would've been way better if it focused on him more. The fort scene was stupid and Vanessa made no sense but I don't think these parts of the the movie made it unbearable to watch. I think that the movie would've felt way more solid if it didn't try to pander so much to children, like I was 11 when the first game came out and I never really figured that the robots were really INTELLIGENT y'know, like possessed sure but I figured that they just acted violently because they were in a more base form, like unintelligent robots with unbridled rage or something. These robots though lose all their mystery and intrigue when they build that stupid fort, and after that scene this movie loses all of its steam and just goes down hill. If this movie had more serious moments like more character development for Mike and his sister, and moments that were similar to the games with cryptic storytelling I think it could've been a great movie, but I think my mental rating is like a 65 -70 (I kind of liked it sue me). Should've been rated R but that would never happen.

Regarding the films story and themes, Scott played a major part in the films story development. The books also don’t match the games (exactly), but themes and characters carry over in different ways in this franchise than in most. Scott sometimes gives a 1-to-1 character a completely different name or design based on how he wants his message conveyed, so it not following the video games 1 for 1 is pretty on point for how the story has been told in this series.

My biggest wishes for Fnaf would have been if they leaned into more of the slasher elements of the movie. Of the whole movie, we get 2 sequences (both incredibly short) of the animatronics and Afton actually posing a threat. The sequences where they were just messing around with the animatronics felt quite dumb and the dream sequences were useless. I wish Matthew Lillard was given more room to shine. He's a great actor with long and early ties to horror in Scream and Scoobie Doo. After I learned that the Ghostface and Springtrap now share the same actors, it made me want a Scream-like chase sequence near the end where Michael and William actually duke it out, nodding to the Fnaf franchise with plenty of jumpscares, and towards Scream with more than just him wiping the knife, maybe add a couple of classic Stu quotes to bring a bit of comedic relief to the chase sequence
@octodaddy877
@octodaddy877 6 месяцев назад
True, but there's a potential issue with that: The animatronics can't show themselves to be a threat too early otherwise Mike (and any other reasonable person) would quit the job immediately, unlike in the games where the player coming back each night doesn't have to be logically explained. However, I agree that there should have been more sequences with the animatronics being creepy and threatening. I loved the sequence with the vandals. FNAF always thrived more on atmosphere and creepiness than jumpscares (the jumpscares tended to be just a punishment following a tense moment), which I think that sequence demonstrated perfectly. Perhaps they could have extended the last night in the pizzeria to include more hiding from the animatronics and stuff like that. I think there are a lot of scenes that ended up getting cut (I find it hard to believe they didn't even TRY including a Toreador March or Freddy laugh moment) so maybe that has something to do with it.
@jskywalker58
@jskywalker58 6 месяцев назад
as a fan i found the film kind of disappointing its mainly because of the source material changes, we don't get to see mike in the office trying to defend himself from the animatronics and the office itself doesn't even resemble the one from the game. also while not outright comfirmed, its heavily implied in the games that mike and michael are the same person and it really makes me wonder why the movie didn't went with that, it would have given mike a bigger connection to both freddy's and the antagonist. the animatronics lack the threatening and creepy presence they have in the games and before anyone uses the "there possessed by kids excuse" in case you forgotten there possessed by kids in the games too but that didn't stop them from being scary, i didn't really like that they become so friendly early on it really took away the suspense, that fort building scene felt like an unintentional middle finger to anyone who was hoping this was gonna be a genuine horror film. and vanessa is afton's daughter? yeah okay i guess were just gonna ignore his 3 actual children from the games. some might think this is nitpicking but this is just how i feel if you like it that perfectly fine but personally this isn't what i wanted from a fnaf film, it lacks the scary tone of the games and feels more like a horror comedy, though i guess that should have been expected since after 4th game the franchises started to tone tone down the creepiness most likely out of fear of scaring away the younger fans i honestly prefer some of the fanmade fnaf films over this cause while not perfect i feel like they did a better job capturing the tone of the games.

I agree with you. Let me give you an analogy...if you look at Star Wars...they gave us 2 whole movies just telling Anakin's story...so by the time he is locked into the Darth Vader suit it's really emotional because we knew who Anakin was...and now we see him become the villain Darth Vader... it's actually the most intense scene in Star Wars. In the FNAF movie we meet a career counselor and then they spend the rest of the movie on other things and people...then career counselor gets locked in the suit. The majority of the first movie should have told Afton's story and laid out the basics of him, Henry, their families and the death of kids in the pizza place. For those who are not FNAF fans...they know nothing of Afton by the time he is locked into the suit. Terrible story telling when you compare it to the brilliance of George Lucas. And Afton is their villain...they decided to just skip over his story for characters we don't care about...Vanessa, the aunt for example. That's very frustrating that they didn't want to spend any time on their most important character.

Both walking corpses (you could easily leave out the scooping though), he wants to find him and end all they've caused. Not to mention the Henry speech. But when the first movie is just "Ghost children can't remember own murder for some reason and a random drawing on a wall dictates ther complete obedience", it leaves some red flags for the story as a whole.

If you're looking for an actual horror fnaf experience, check out the fnaf vhs videos, they're terrifying. So something of note, Mike Schmitt in the games is actually Mike going back to the pizzerias in an attempt to free his brother's spirit (his intentions is still highly debated). Another thing, the families are inversed. So in the games and books The Afton family has three kids and the Emilys (Afton's business' partner) have one. In the movie Afton has 1 child and the Emilys have three. That's why Mike isn't exactly the same Mike from the games. It wasn't Freddy took Abby to the restaurant, it was Golden Freddy who can teleport for...reasons. The reason Garret isn't in the movie is because he'll most likely be in the next movie. The only dead child associated with a car is the puppet, who also was revealed in the second game. IMO Vanessa and the child custody stuff was lame or just badly handled, but the movie was fun.

I think the original point of the movie was pure fanservice and maybe rebooting the story of the series. Fnaf jumpscares became not scary a long time ago so nobody expected it to be scary and the series was known for it's dark lore rather than gore. Purely for the fans rather than being a good film (also the development hell for the movie). I definitely agree with you with your story criticisms tho.

If I could change anything about the movie I would say a couple more jumpscares, be a little bit more horror, but for the fort building scene it shows that the animatronics aren't mindless killing machines, just twisted souls that never really had a chance at living their lives. Would it have been better without it? Possibly but it shoes the nature of them not being killing machines.

The main reason this movie doesn't follow the games is due to Scott's decision to make it easier for people who've never played a FNAF game to get into it. That way they didn't feel like they were missing much from not playing the games. It's easier to view the movie as a different canon from the FNAF games. Similar to how the books are a different canon than the games. Though I loved the movie, I would've liked more scares. A rated R FNAF would've been great.

The lore part - I think that everyone involved with the story production and Scott himself as well agreed that the movies should exist in their own seperate timeline to the games and books so they only keep some of the more major plot points and characters. As far as the protagonist being Mike, I disagree with the notion that he is "just the fnaf 1 security guard" as even in the actual lore it's implied that Mike Schmidt was possibly Michael Afton. In case of the movies though there are clear hints dropped that Mike isn't just a random security guard given a backstory, but he could possibly be a son of Henry Emily as the events that transpire are very similar to the books, which this movie used as inspiration. William kills Henry's child, who by some small hints dropped in the movie could be the puppet, Henry's relationship goes into turmoil, his wife dies (in the movie I guess she leaves) Henry goes insane with grief, creating a sentient doll animatronic who in this case could possibly be Abby as it would explain her seeing the spirits of the children as she herself is a manifestation of remnant and how she was born while supposedly Henry's marriage was falling apart. The only character I would outwardly question would be Vanessa being William's daughter but it could possibly explain events of Help Wanted and SB further down the movie timeline.

Pretty much the only criticism of yours that I 100% agree with and yelled "THANK YOU!" at my screen over was "Vanessa sucks but the film wants us to think she's a morally good person for some reason." Vanessa genuinely didn't even need to be in the film. As a character she just doesn't quite fit, and the majority of annoying chatacter tropes (character who knows all the lore about the monster for no reason, character who wont tell you why the heck its dangerous but instead insists on being vague and spooky instead of actually helpful, etc) were used on her. She's a weird hybrid of "exposition giver" and "idk we need a female lead" and just ends up feeling out of place and bringing the flow of the story to a grind. Even presenting her as more morally grey like her actual game counterpart would have justified her character a little more (sequel stuff, maybe) but as she is right now, I just can't stand the "I am 100% capable of helping but I just don't because something something daddy issues." No shade to the actress though, she did a great job and was perfectly cast to mimic the in game Vanessa. Just think the character was utilized poorly

Every actor in the movie did a great job...the movie has no bad acting in it. They did their jobs. The problem is in the writing of the story and editing if they removed stuff fans would have loved to give us the boring stuff and building the fort which was just dumb. Vanessa first appears in Security Breach which I believe is game 8. She doesn't belong in the first movie and maybe could have shown up in the third movie. Definitely put in there to be the bossy "Mary Sue"...

4:27 Remember, the entirety of the script for this movie was either created or signed off on by Scott. Since you didn't play any games past 4 or read any of the books/novels, you might not know it, but Scott has created alternate timelines and continuities for pretty much every new medium. The 3D games (help wanted through ruin)? Different continuity (at least slightly). The novels? Completely different timeline. The goosebumps-style books? Almost all of the short stories are not directly canon, set in a world where names/events are different, but still related to the original story. So the movie having a different story from the games is par for the course for Scott.

I very much enjoyed this movie. The one part that drove me nuts is what happened with the Aunt’s body after they stopped Afton???? She’s just chilling on the floor in his house when they get back. Like, someone is going to look for her and the last place she was known to be is Mike’s house, a man who is known to hate her and is trying to keep custody of his sister. He would be suspect #1. I wish they had instead wrote it as she was knocked out, and when she woke up the next morning they just told her she ate something bad and passed out or something. They kind of just gloss over her death in the scene at the end where they’re eating breakfast lol
@catelynh1020
@catelynh1020 6 месяцев назад
I wouldn't be surprised if golden freddy moved her body and cleaned up (we know the cleanup can be pretty good based off them only leaving a little blood after killing multiple people) when he disappeared from beside abby. And abby was totally willing to have her out of their lives, so lied to mike that she left early which is why she got the cab to come visit him. Mike would have called and left an angry voicemail since she wouldn't pick up, kind of like how he called the babysitter multiple times not knowing she was dead, then gone on with their lives thinking she maybe gave up trying to get abby. A missing persons report wouldn't happen for a bit since it was telegraphed that she likely lives alone and has only been seen with people she pays to have around her, so there's no one to immediately call out her disappearance.

So one thing about the movie I think you glossed over is the part about how Mike has the same dream every night and you claimed that it isn't realistic because nobody has the same dream every night. But in the beginning it shows him reading a book about the practice of dreamscaping and shows him listening to forest sounds. He talks to the cop lady about how he uses "familiar sounds" and sleeping pills to help him get to the same dream every night. Those are called dream anchors and also some people use totems. Familiar items and sounds to make the brain more aware and have more control of the dream and it has very real science behind it. As someone who used to practice lucid dreaming I could have any dream I wanted any night I wanted as I was in full control. I did it for years. Your critiques of the mocie are mostly valid, ive never played FNAF and thought the movie was pretty average. It was decent, worth a watch.. but I just wanted to point out that the one particular critique you had about the dream sequences was inaccurate.

I absolutely can say that they were killed because they were wrecking things. Just like in real life with your home when someone walks into your house and start wrecking things you respond immediately which is what happened with the group. However, the security guard was more like an uninvited house guest who won’t leave. You’ll try to get him out non-violently but if he keeps coming back or won’t leave you’ll eventually escalate things.

I remember watching this in theatres and the majority of the audience were actually teenagers and they surprisingly knew a lot about the lore and were completely geeking out at all the Easter eggs and references. (Kept murmuring to each other when they noticed them.) I was quite shocked never would've thought so many teenagers would've gotten into a game that came out like 9 years ago. It was quite enjoyable seeing how into it they were more than me actually and I've been following the games and lore since it first dropped. They went crazy when they say Matpats cameo but didn't know who Cory was 😅 and even shouted out" WAS THAT THE BITE OF 87 "when Mike's babysitter was chomped by Freddy

My daughter and I watched this together and we both were like “Why didn’t they just stick to the lore?” I mean they could flush it out more. Maybe go back in time when they first created the Pizza joint and then the bite of 87 happened and how it changed Afton. I mean at least it would have been a much better film than this. And yes rated R because they can’t do as much at pg 13. I guess maybe the smaller kids couldn’t see it but it would be a much better horror film that way or at least make it creepier if they are going to keep it pg 13. Just my take

I am not a huge fan, I took my friend to the cinema to watch it together and we pleasantly enjoyed it, my only complaint was that it felt like they played it a bit too safe on the gore and the scares, like holy shit did they hold back on everything which could have worked in this films favor. All in all, I'm just glad that it didn't become a trainwreck.
