I haven't read all the comments so this may be a repeat. Rust is very common on the inside of the tank. There used to be an old guy near me, 30 years ago, that ran a surplus store with a small section of used Coleman stoves. He gave me a tip to get the rust out of the tank. He said pour in about a hundred BB's in a dry tank then add 12 or so ounces of kerosene. Put the cap on and shake until you can't shake any more. Pour everything out, clean the BB's and repeat. Eventually the kerosene and BB's will come out fairly clean. Also, I notice you don't take your thumb off the pump hole while you pull the shaft out. My dad, and now I do the same, always uncovered that hole in the end of the pump shaft on the out stroke and covered it on the in stroke. You can get better pressure quicker. I'm still using the one we had when I was a kid waaaay back in the early 50's. Great video. Thanks

I was recently gifted this model, I've always had propane before but after getting it to work as good as yours I love it so much I want to light it for fun almost daily. I could never have imagined how much enjoyment I would get with a stove. I can hardly wait to take it camping.

I picked up a 424 for $3:50 on eBay. It leaked fuel and caught on fire. Burned my table to the ground. Everyone laughed Stove survived, burned the knob. Fixed the leak,good to go.

I just spent about an hour and a half tinkering with repairing the needle valve on a 425F and it is now burning beautifully - I think I paid $15 for it at the Flea Market so I'm pretty Stoked about that. A couple of tricks I discovered was: The needle being fully seated in the little swagged end is critical - put the Jet end on Last - it allows you to verify the needle is perfectly centered and gently twist the jet onto it. When I was placing the needle in from the back with the jet on I kept bending it or having trouble with its alignment in the Jet nozzle and would have to take it apart and do it again. Thanks for the Video! It definitely helped me fix my stove! 😀 👍

Coleman makes the best portable cooking stoves in my opinion.They are super easy to operate, an maintain.A lot of thier success is the basic design , it’s remained much the same over45yrs. If something works so great for many years, why change it? An you can still buy parts for them or find a trashed out one an use it for replacement parts. Coleman is the BEST!!!!!!

Best stove ever! I've got 2 of them. One is from the early '70s when I was a child. The other one I got at a garage sale for $15. I started casting bullets with one of these stoves. They get extremely hot. Whenever I go camping, the younger guys ( 21-26 year olds) are blown away by the fact that these stoves are not propane operated. I still have the fold away Coleman oven that you set on top. My ol' man made a lot of biscuits in that oven. Thanks for sharing!

I just picked up a 1966 Coleman 421 which looks like it has been sitting in a barn for 20 years. I found my .22 rifle cleaning rod fit the generator tube perfectly. I used brush, jag and patch and cleaned it up like new using WD40. I'm doing a full restoration on the unit. Your video is very helpful, thanks.

Nice video. I have model 425E (the one made before your model) that I have used for 50 years now. It's great. It's virtue is its simplicity. I've had to repaint it as it rusted, change its leather pump washer, and, of course, the generators (the long metal tube that goes across the primary burner) as they aged and got rusted or clogged up. I've always used Coleman fuel (white gasoline), but I've seen others using regular leaded or unleaded automotive gasoline in them in other countries where white gas was not available. I'm told you can take the generators apart and clean them out to get them going again if you have been using automotive gas. It's something those prepper people should keep in mind. The nearly identical newer model 424 is designed to also burn automotive gasoline as well with its improved generator (but it's not recommended). The generators are not interchangeable. I've tried. There are some safety issues as well. If you leave the flame on a very low simmer level, it can flame out since there is not enough heat to continue vaporizing the liquid fuel. And then the raw gasoline will pool in the bottom of the case. That is very unsafe. It has happened to me once. Also, as an experiment, I've run mine on kerosene. It works, but priming is very difficult, and if the valve is set too low, a flame-out is very likely. Also if you set the valve too high it will flare up as the fuel does not get properly vaporized. I expect something like charcoal lighter fluid would perform the same way. Gasoline (white or not) is much better. What I like about my 425 is one of those small and simple propane adapters I can keep stored in the case where one can use the small one-pound propane bottles that you can find just about anywhere in the US. They work pretty well. There is no need to buy another propane Coleman stove. Be safe.

I have a 425 E, date on the tank is 7/71. Bought it new when we first started camping. That little stove has been, and still is, a workhorse over the years. Not only for camping. Often used it for backyard family reunions and such. Back in the mid-1970's, cooked on it for a month while it was sitting on my non-working electric kitchen stove (electrical contractor foul up). It's served us well when storms took down the grid over the years, as well. Today, it's on my to-do list, to make sure it's ready for the approaching ice storm season. Thanks for sharing some good advice. Like you, I also have the propane adapter. One more thing to add to your "425 kit" is a stick lighter, if you haven't already. Prefer them over using a Bic or kitchen matches to light the stove. Again, thumbs up.

Brother I am in love!...She is younger than me but still experienced...I'm a 67 model...lol. Yep that is what the problem was is the liquid black just needed removed...it gums up the jet and the orifice needle just couldn't cope with that amount of gum...so to speak. Too much oil in the pipe...lol. I'd say that you have the best deal in the universe next to free, and if it weren't for the shipping...well it would have been a complete steal! I love old Colemans and plan on getting my hands on one for fun and emergencies...the idea of unleaded fuel being used is really nice. Again I am watching this on the BIG SCREEN and I am just tickled to death...um I mean LIFE...lol.

I have the old Coleman stove my parents bought in 1951. It has a round, gold coloured tank that fills on the end. It still works great. I clean the dust & dead bugs out of it, fresh fuel, oil the leather gasket in the pump, & it works perfect every summer.

These stoves are for the most part indestructible :) I have had many that were incredibly beat up, filthy dirty and still worked just fine with some love and care just like you did here! I bet just a new gasket for the cap would work too. Those caps usually are brass and liek much of teh stove very rugged. For some reason these stoves hold a fondness I can't explain. :) I suppose just good memories using them camping etc growing up. Yours looked like it was working perfectly in the end. I guess you can use unleaded gasoline but I have never tried it. I will just stick with the coleman fuel... much cleaner. Subscribed to your channel!

You might trying taking apart the burners and cleaning them good. that will make them easier to burn. just take the screw out of the center and remove the plates. Carefully buff them on a wire wheel and resemble in the same order you took them apart. It helps noticeably, I have done this to 6 or 7 vintage Coleman stoves I own.

I have a couple of them. usually will pick them up a garage/estate sales for 5-10 dollars. For $20 you can get an adapter that will let these run on the little green propane canisters. You can run gasoline in them the way they are or for 35 pick up a new generator and valve for a dual fuel stove. They are great stoves. I get them for my kid so they will have a stove that can run on propane, gas , kerosene or Coleman fuel in cast SHTF.

I know this a long shot and old. I just received one of these stoves, 425F date code 6 83, can coleman gas or gasoline be run in stove a is, not sure what duel fuel means?
@bobsundquist2039
@bobsundquist2039 6 лет назад
Duel fuel by Coleman means it can run RUG (regular unleaded gasoline) or White gas. They are almost the same but the white gas does not have all the additives they put in auto gas. The duel fuel stoves from Coleman have a silver fuel tank. Get an adapter for the little green propane canisters for $20.00, they work well. If it is really cold or you are at altitude, propane does not always work. I have run RUG in a standard Coleman with no real issues. It can dirty the generator/valve from the additives. I clean it with Gumout and a 22 brush. Usually I just get an off brand of White gas at Walmart. It there is an emergency it is good to know RUG will work in it.

don't use unleaded gas,even in the duel fuel stoves/lanterns; its just to filled with additives and ethonal....the gas goes bad in WEEKS now instead of months, it will gum up your gear. buy the off-brand coleman type fuel trust me its worth it to save the cleaning hassles of jets, generatrors

These are simple machines when you said it doesn’t look like it has enough pressure it doesn’t so pump it up. When you mentioned that it didn’t look like it had enough fuel clean the fuel tube out. Like I said these are relatively simple if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck it’s probably a duck. If it looks like it’s running out of fuel it probably is, etc. etc. etc.

Very nice buy. Always a gamble but you did well. I was given an old 2 burner coleman stove. 416 or something like that. Had to convert it to butane. To expensive for a new tank, value, regulator, this and that. Bought a butane setup and never looked back. And NO LIQUID FUEL!!!! Just those green bottles that I easily refill. My stove is pretty beat up and looks like shit but will fire up every time. Make sure to clean REAL GOOD that U shaped tube the fuel nozzle fits in. And down the tube to the 2nd burner. Bugs love building webs and nests in those spaces. Ya did real good on yours. I have a Coleman 275 lantern (turd) with a bad shrader value. Cant get it out and turning into a real pain. Hate to trash it because of a cheap shrader value? Oh well. Anyway, good video brother. Peace from Texas

@jiujitsu2000
@jiujitsu2000 7 лет назад
True! It's that design that makes it work so good. The fuel goes over the burner and gets converted into a gas. Thank you! Merry Christmas!

Bought one at a garage sale for $7 a a couple of years ago. Looked like it had been used once. Also have a single and a three burner and several Coleman lanterns.

I have a new 424, never been able to get it to stay lit (tried three different times). Yellow pulsating flame is the only option. Will take the tube apart... But my dad's old decades-old one still works fine.

I asked my mom for the 425 we had for longer I could remember. She told me she tossed it in a truck for the dump.. Obviously I dug it out. Was leaves and stuff but still tried to throw it away!

Carburetor cleaner will clean the jet very nicely. I have the same model stove. Found a gallon of 30 year old Coleman fuel and it burns just fine!

The colder they are the harder they are to light. Also helps to preheat the genny to vaporize the fuel.

Update, I loved my 425f during my camping trip last month. I do have a question for you sir. I cannot get it to simmer. If I turn the knob down just before all the way off it starves and flames out. Anything higher and it's stronger than a simmer. Any ideas? I have a new generator. I have not messed with the check valve though it seems to be fine. I have not removed the threaded assembly with the small tube located in the tank. Any thoughts?

Hey maybe you can verify my concerns with an old model 4m 2 burner with gold coloured round tank. Its probably from the 50's.The filler is on the end of the tank. When last used i filled it completely full with the tank standing upright so really no room for air. When lit it leaked gas continuously out the needle orifice and would not go to a nice blue flame. I believe that due to being far too full what should be vapour coming out the upper hole in the valve is liquid. Does that sound like a reasonable analysis?

I cleaned my old stove myself and the flame has improved quite a bit, however there is continuous flame as well at the junction of the tube and the master burner body. I made sure the end was very tight and still it did not fix it. Any suggestions?

Hi Jiujitsu 2000 Just got like new Vintage Coleman Camping Stove ~ 425F My issue with it is that the pump will not pressurize.Took it apart it the seal looks good.Pump will nut push in fully to pressurize when thumb over the hole It's like I didn't turn it counter clock wise.Any suggestions wood be greatly appreciated,

Sounds like you have a closed check valve it's not allowing the air to go through. I would suggest taking the pump out and spraying some carburetor cleaner down and towards the bottom so they can get to the check valve. Let it set for a day and if you have compressed air blow air down there make sure you have eye protection. Most of the time that fixes the problem

The tank on mine doesn’t seem to pressure. Could this be a pump issue? I took it apart just as you did.

I put some crown camp fuel through mine from walmart. It's super sooty. I'm going to try coleman fuel hopefully that runs cleaner.
@antidecepticon
@antidecepticon 5 лет назад
Naptha, I hear unleaded gasoline and others. if the generator is hot any fuel will go except for alcohol. you will need to clean the carbon out , which requires full disassembly.
