10:10 interesting point of fact; that plot device is actually called the ‘Worf Effect’ A character or faction is hyped up to the audience who are told how powerful or dangerous they are, and then a new character (either an antagonist or future ally/protagonist ) is introduced who immediately wrecks them thereby showing how threatening they are It follows the concept of ‘Tell Don’t Show’. In StarTrek we are told constantly about how badass Worf is. All these deeds and battles and titles given to him. Previous achievements and accomplishments. How he fought against impossible odds and won. But we are never shown any of these in the show. And anytime he does fight we see him lose or his victory if any are explained away by for plot reasons. A cinematic paper tiger.

For a novel, how about a generation perspective from a family. From implementation of the genestealer virus and you see how the human mind degrades over the generation.

Well I'd like to think that there are some Tyranids that have semi-individuality, like Old One-eye, it would be nice if we saw either why the Tyranids are coming from their perspective, whether it truly is just to eat everything or is there more at play? A thought, I had is that maybe the Tyranids are running from other Tyranids, just think, if the Tyranids come from Galaxy F, they then go to Galaxy C, and D, they eat everything and evolve completely differently. They then meet again but have become completely different organisms, so they had to flee from the other superior form of Tyranids that consumed better biomass in the other Galaxy they went too

You mentioning Worf effect just reminds me they had an episode where he literally almost died because some cheese head forgot to probably strap in their barrels below deck.

Rule of thumb; short of updating every faction? Give every faction their own 'Brutal Kunnin' book doesn't even have to be common but make it common enough that people can point to it and say "yes, that's my faction"

I probably should just type it out on the original video, but it was a while ago and I was too lazy/busy then. While I get where he's coming from, and agree especially about the models, I don't feel there's a lot one can do with the Tyranids that doesn't involve just wiping the majority of them out. They work as an enemy, a threat, a source of horror. A faction, not so much. He also skimmed over the fact that even though the Tyranids suffer "loss after loss", most of those losses only come after a string of victories on their end, where one more victory for them means effectively eliminating a faction/force outright. He also forgot certain Tyranid special characters like the Doom of Malantai (though he does mention it in a later video.) Games Workshop all but wrote themselves into a corner with the implication of this huge hive fleet just outside the galaxy as well, cause it means if that's true, then the setting ends with the Tyranids eventually eating everyone except the Necrons, anyone who can get into the Webway in time, and then maybe some Forge Worlds and worlds hidden away in warp storms. The only way I could see them besting that is if every other faction puts aside their differences and gets everything together specifically to deal with this threat alone (which wouldn't realistically happen in this universe, and people would complain about it happening), or one or more of the factions pulling out something so powerful to deal with the Tyranids that it would beg the question of how they aren't taking over the galaxy at that point. Or something like Sisko's speech to the Prophets, except now to the Chaos Gods, and they somehow super Great Rift the Tyranids out of the galaxy, which again is something they (probably) can't do.

I would love a Halo 3 ODST style book. Have a planet be completely overrun by the Tyrannids with nearly all escape completely cut off or actively leaving, with the story focusing on a small group of elite gaurdsmen who managed to survive the initial battles and are now trying to navigate a city ovcerun by the bugs and escape. Have first person accounts about the horrors of what they see, bodies being devoured in the open or dragged into ships to go Emperor knows where, with some still alive and screaming for help. The gaurdsmen want to help but are completely unable to as they sneak through destroyed buildings and ruined streets covered in gore, blood, corpses, and ammunition cases. Of course they wouldn’t fight much, but that’s hardly a bad thing. Have them face off against some small swarms towards the end which triggers the hivemind and forces them to flee for their lives because they have finally been seen and if they don’t get to their escape soon, they won’t be able to escape. Finally have individual members of this squad/group get killed along the way, give them all personalities, backstories, and things that get us attached to them and make it clear it doesn’t matter how much we may like a character, in the end they are just as likely to be eaten as the others. With as minimum plot armor as possible to show the true hopelessness, fear, and sheer dread of an unwinable situation where the few who do escape forever changed.

Obliterating a barley defended plant of chumps isn’t a victory for the Nids… it’s lunch. What Pancreas is saying is they never win real battles against the other factions, no one is saying they don’t kill a bunch of people first, they do, but when those people are nobodies on some random, unnamed backwater mud ball in the middle of bum f**k nowhere, it doesn’t matter on a grand scale. This is a galaxy where the Imperium will happily sacrifice hundreds of thousands of guardsmen to stop a single threat or set an entire populated planet on fire to kill one person who MIGHT be there, a few plants going dark in the background is neither significant nor is it unique to the Nids.

My biggest problem with nids is how humanoid they look, despite having all the potential of being pretty much the only "not just weird-colored and proportioned humans" faction in the game. I mean they even have swords and guns when they could have bladed and other weapon limbs. (And I understand that this is first of all due to the need for models that are able to hold a variety of weapons. But Schwarmführer having just four kinda normal-looking sabres is just stupid. In this regard I think sc zergs have outpaced the nids.

@@OldManReacts and here's a controversial opinion, given the guard and the Tau's play style, they are a bit too similar to it, relying on firepower instead of Melee I mean, yes the Tau have better guns and tanks, but they still play with distance more than anything, like how the guard are using overwhelming firepower to win their battles I know this is controversial, and I don't play Warhammer, but this is something I couldn't help but notice, making the Tau, basically an alien guardsman regiment

The writing has a major problem..... to much "op abilites".... in a logical setting (LOL) Tyranides would win by using Genestealers alone. "Tyranides can do this and that and infiltrade and psycic more potant than eldar.... shadows in the warp and this and that and and and." So.... they outnumber everyone, infiltrate like no other (Alpha Legion aside), can block of ANY communication and reinforcement (shadow in the warp) and work as one PERFERT organism on the battlefield. If so yeah, Chaos is NOT the major problem in the universe. By far not. So..... if you must write a story about how other races fight them... you can't write it.... you must nerfing Tyranides to make it a fair fight. Edit: what i am saying is, Tyranids like any other faction needs a weakspot so the stong points have meaning. No more LOL Genesteal on like every plant because Tyranids scary. Make it a rare and unique treat.
@Sorain1
@Sorain1 Год назад
To a degree every faction has that same writing problem. Tyanids and Necrons get it the worst, but Dark Eldar, Chaos, Admech, even the Imperium (or any given sub-faction at least) throws up massive issues. The two factions that suffer this the least are the Eldar (You are constantly told their issues.) and Orks (Again, their issues are up front.) yet even then, it is still there.
