Live Coverage: Fl v. Markeith Loyd Trial - Killing of Police Lt. Debra Clayton
The defendant shot and killed Police Lt. Debra Clayton on January 9, 2017, when she tried to bring him in on a warrant in the murder of his pregnant ex-girlfriend Sade Dixon. The manhunt intensified. Loyd went blind in his left eye from injuries sustained when he was finally arrested days later on January 17. Footage shows the arresting officers striking the defendant after he crawled out of a residence. The camera immediately zooms back and to the side of the incident.
The defendant claimed police brutality. Loyd was found guilty of murdering Dixon. He asserted at trial that he was the “victim” in all of this.
In any case, now it’s time for him to face possible responsibility for Clayton’s death. His defense has signaled that they’re going to argue that he was insane during the time of that shooting.
The state asserts that the arrest was proper and that the defendant got injured when “he refused to obey the commands of law enforcement” trying to arrest him, according to a March 4 filing obtained by Law&Crime. They oppose a defense demand to admit into evidence certain body cam, and some video from the interview room. Footage only shows things like Loyd complaining about the tightness of a handcuff, and “a self-serving hearsay statement by Defendant that he ‘was going to turn himself in anyway.'”

In fact, he used street language, didn't try to clean it up, didn't make excuses for cheating, ,,,womanizing but then expected her to be on the up/up...didn't blame her for stuff trying to deflect. Nope....he owned what he did/said. He was "street" and she was too. He was willing to take on fatherhood even though it wasn't his child. (Who does that??) I didn’t know that. Thank you for sharing! Sadly, the vast majority of Loyd’s thinking & rationales for his behavior are the result of his misunderstandings & misperceptions, along w/mental health issues. He definitely has a significant amount of paranoia & delusional thinking. But that doesn’t mean he’s legally insane, which is far different than merely having a mental illness. I do believe that he believes 100% of what he’s saying. That’s what makes him so dangerous.

You know what, as horrific as this case is on the surface, I'm not sure either. A few things....the way he tells his story...the little things that add up. The reality of how the news media lies. The fact that the police blinded him in one eye is a whole 'nuther' story. But little things how he tells the story. The only thing I get he should be charged with is the death of the police officer, he didn't have to shoot her several times. The girlfriend and brother story...sometimes it's a "street thing" some wouldn't understand. That's why you have women packing guns...that's how they live. It's "that life". Unfortunately whether or not he's telling the truth isn't as much the issue as it is their deaths are a direct cause of his actions. I don't see premeditation yet (I've not watched it all) but on Sade's part, she went back in the house to get the gun. He kept his on him since being robbed twice. It's unfortunate all round........

I.E- he was getting food to feed a homeless guy and talking about his close relationship with God (which having that is wonderful if that is your choice). You know how people say "oh they are such a Saint!" Only other example I haven't heard yet is him teaching underprivileged children and teaching them to read or something. 😳
