Live Coverage: Fl v. Markeith Loyd Trial - Killing of Police Lt. Debra Clayton
Happening in Court:
The defendant shot and killed Police Lt. Debra Clayton on January 9, 2017, when she tried to bring him in on a warrant in the murder of his pregnant ex-girlfriend Sade Dixon. The manhunt intensified. Loyd went blind in his left eye from injuries sustained when he was finally arrested days later on January 17. Footage shows the arresting officers striking the defendant after he crawled out of a residence. The camera immediately zooms back and to the side of the incident.
The defendant claimed police brutality. Loyd was found guilty of murdering Dixon. He asserted at trial that he was the “victim” in all of this.
In any case, now it’s time for him to face possible responsibility for Clayton’s death. His defense has signaled that they’re going to argue that he was insane during the time of that shooting.
The state asserts that the arrest was proper and that the defendant got injured when “he refused to obey the commands of law enforcement” trying to arrest him, according to a March 4 filing obtained by Law&Crime. They oppose a defense demand to admit into evidence certain body cam, and some video from the interview room. Footage only shows things like Loyd complaining about the tightness of a handcuff, and “a self-serving hearsay statement by Defendant that he ‘was going to turn himself in anyway.'”

This judge and his attorney have given him more chances and more consideration than anybody I've ever seen. He's had tantrum after tantrum and this judge has let him try to get it out of his system. Any other judge wouldn't have been as patient as she's been with him and NO she doesn't have to be. Like he sad he thinks he's smarter than all of them and he's mad because it wasn't said word for word like HE WANTED IT TOLD. HE'S MAD BECAUSE HE SAYS HE SHOT A POLICE OFFICER IN SELF DEFENSE AFTER HE WAS ON THE RUN AND WAS A WANTED MAN!

Even though he already has 5 life sentences and will never get out, this is a death penalty case. If he is convicted and sentenced to death, he is housed alone and will never have physical contact with anyone ever again except guards until his execution. Everything they do is alone and even visitations will be non contact until he dies! It's torture, that's why he's fighting so hard. If he is sentenced to just life, he can be out with other inmates and socialize or manipulate people. They can take classes, work and make money! Death row is total isolation basically. Hope he gets death.

Well that would make sense IF what he was complaining about focused on the only single charge that matters-the 1st degree murder of Lt. Clayton. That’s the only death penalty eligible crime. This is really heartbreaking. And read my entire comment before attacking me. I’m Looking at a human being who was a little child and those who were supposed to love him, ruined him. He can’t even talk. Yes, he committed heinous crimes and needs to get the death penalty, but this is the perfect picture of what happens when children are raised with hate. wow i did not think he would go off during this round but he did lmao markeith is a character...but to be honest i think mr loyd is just tryna manipulate...i really do believe that the guy he carjacked really did say "are you serious" the police in Orlando always have had an issue with taking down statements word for word....its just a glitch that his lawyer did try to use to create some reasonable doubt during the questioning, it just didn't work. It probably did work on the female witness earlier but not the Antwan guy.

They’ll probably add a few hundred more years to his current sentence of life in prison without parole. James Holmes got 3,000 more years added to his.
