Live Coverage: Fl v. Markeith Loyd Trial - Killing of Police Lt. Debra Clayton
Happening in Court:
JURORS REQUES THE FOLLOWING READBACKS:
AS IT RELATES TO COUNT 1 (1st degree murder Lt. Clayton)
(1st degree murder Lt. Clayton)
* Walmart employee Monica Pridgeon - exactly what she saw and where she was positioned when the shooting happened.
* Sgt. Pete Cadiz (lead detective) - trajectory path of Lt. Clayton
* Det. Shane Overfield
* Karen Livengood (Lead CSI)
* Markeith Loyd
* Walmart employee Julia Johnson - That she believed Clayton shot first, her timeline.
* Dr. Joshua Stephany (M.E.) - which shot disabled Clayton from moving.
AS IT RELATES TO COUNT 2 (Attempted 1st degree murder for shooting at Capt. Joe Carter):
* Markeith Loyd - Specifically interaction/encounter with Carter.
* Capt. Joe Carter - specifically position of the car in the parking lot , how he and the car were positioned. Exact interaction/encounter with Markeith Loyd.
* Karen Livengood - CSI
The defendant shot and killed Police Lt. Debra Clayton on January 9, 2017, when she tried to bring him in on a warrant in the murder of his pregnant ex-girlfriend Sade Dixon. The manhunt intensified. Loyd went blind in his left eye from injuries sustained when he was finally arrested days later on January 17. Footage shows the arresting officers striking the defendant after he crawled out of a residence. The camera immediately zooms back and to the side of the incident.
The defendant claimed police brutality. Loyd was found guilty of murdering Dixon. He asserted at trial that he was the “victim” in all of this.
In any case, now it’s time for him to face possible responsibility for Clayton’s death. His defense has signaled that they’re going to argue that he was insane during the time of that shooting.
The state asserts that the arrest was proper and that the defendant got injured when “he refused to obey the commands of law enforcement” trying to arrest him, according to a March 4 filing obtained by Law&Crime. They oppose a defense demand to admit into evidence certain body cam, and some video from the interview room. Footage only shows things like Loyd complaining about the tightness of a handcuff, and “a self-serving hearsay statement by Defendant that he ‘was going to turn himself in anyway.'”

I have no, zero, compassion for this cold blooded killer. It is my hope this jury gives him a date with the needle. It's not fair that if he is executed, he will go out easier than the three he shot and killed. If he gets another life term for killing Lt Debra Clayton I can take solace knowing that even though he thinks he will be hailed a hero for killing a police officer, the reality is most prisoners hate a child killer and dispense their own kind of justice for him being one. So long Markeitha!

Some of you all don't seem to know this man's history. He is already in prison and was before this trial occurred..he was found guilty and sentenced to LWOP for killing his gf Sade Dixon who was pregnant with his son in 2016 or 17 can't remember but I know trial was a couple years ago. ANYWAYS....when he was on the run for her murder was when he killed Lt. Clayton. This is also testified to in this trial about him being wanted. Not sure why so many people saying "he won't do well in prison " or "hope he likes prison" ummm....he already has been there for several years.... 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️🧐

Somewhat true. However, the average wait is 15ish years. In 2013 Florida inacted a law to speed up the process that incompasses many things. One of which is to sanction and fine lawyers who are found to be ineffective counsel. It's unclear at this time as to how much speedier the process will be. At least on death row he would be able to hurt only other inmates who are also monsters and COs at Starke are used to dealing with the worst of the worst.

I actually feel for him. I wish he would have had a better life. More chance and opportunity. Better role models and that he would have been loved. I can imagine the deck of cards he was dealt. I also feel sadness for the victims of these horrible acts. I feel that he really has some mental health issues and truly believes that "the system" is out to get him and that the cops would have killed him. He really feels justified because of these issues. I wish there was rehabilitation for him. But unfortunately, there won't be for the victims and now, it's too late for him. So many losses in this story.. no wins.

I 100% agree with everything you said. Yes, we all know what Loyd did was terrible, and of course he should be off the streets permanently, however, it doesn't change the fact that his life and upbringing was really poor and a bad deck of cards he was dealt. No, it doesn't make it right what he did, but his life was not the same as say a person that was raised in a good, healthy home. When I was a kid growing up, my parents always taught me right from wrong, and taught me it's wrong to steal, it's wrong to hurt others, it's wrong to engage in illegal activity etc etc etc, so at a young age, I already knew right from wrong, but that was because of my parents and my upbringing. If I had parents that were horrible and never taught me right from wrong, who knows maybe I would be in prison today.

I don't understand exactly what is a "Death Penalty Worthy Crime?". For example, here where I live in Ohio, we have the Death Penalty, and this man back in 1999 right here in the town that I live in, murdered 3 teenage girls plus a bible study teacher, so that is 4 total people, and he was given life with no chance of parole, not the Death Penalty. He also strangled another inmate to death while in prison, so that makes his kill count 5 people, but just 2 years after killing that inmate, he killed himself in his prison cell, I believe he hung himself. His name was Lawrence Michael Hensley. But my point is, he killed all those people, and was never given death.

I watched the interrogation video of him and something felt off , I dont trust the police even here in the UK , when you see their attitude to never being wrong or admitting they made a mistake they will lie through their teeth , I dont doubt there are many hundreds of people serving time that were stitched up by police and their petty revenge , so seeing the interrogation a couple of years ago I did wonder if something was going on. However you take into account the reason why the police woman was stopping him and you realise this guy is already guilty of being quick to shoot to kill , so when she told him to stop he knew full well his time was up as a free man , if the police wanted him dead they would have killed him , so this paranoid idea he has is in his head, as a member of the public you have no rights to pull a gun on a cop regardless of what you think might happen , too many witnesses of colour were honest enough to back the policewoman that he killed, we know the issue of people and colour not trusting the police and I believe that they wouldn't back up the police if it wasn't the truth , there are too many people who saw him draw his weapon immediately, this isn't the wild west. The man is an arrogant cold blooded killer using past deaths at the hands of the police to save himself from jail. I'm actually surprised the judge allowed him as much time to talk after the verdict , his time for talk was to tell the truth but he continues to lie. He needs to be gagged now , im sure the two women he murdered families are sick of hearing his voice.
