I was going to post this exact comment. I'm glad you beat me to it! I was brought up with my Mum listening to Rumours era stuff and as an adult only musical journey I got into blues and blues rock which naturally took me to Peter. I overlooked this era for a long time. That's what I love about music, it's a journey of constant discovery.
Probably not true, but she never let the bad ones out. And that's the secret to great songwriting - you write the bad ones, and they teach you how to write the good ones.
Mista McVie ,,, what an underrated bass player … Absolutely brilliant.. You can clearly hear him and Mic hold this entire band together with such a perfectly solid backbone … 👌
Bob Welch is so underated to his contributions to the mega band, he's the bridge from their bluesy style to their commercial success, and this song is amazing!
Not the immediate bridge. Danny was. Kirwan produced twice as many songs as Bob during their time together. That doesn't include Danny's songs from the Kiln House time period. None of his numbers were of the blues variety either. Your post is another example of why Bob is the most overrated of all the guitarists that played for FM.
I saw Bob Welch years ago with my namesake, Graham Bell in a band called Rebo (I think) They were both incredible . Are there any recordings out there ?
Welch actually does a fairly credible job (on Green Manalishi) of approximating a Peter Green solo, at least at the beginning. He's playing the verse all wrong though...
The Peter Green era Mac is my favorite but I appreciate all of the later versions. Kirwan and C. McVie were great and Jeremy Spencer doesn't get enough credit for being one of the best slide guitarists of his era.
Would not be surprised if many that watched this were wondering why they were covering a Santana song 😀. Green's time was unknown to me since there was not much coverage of the band on the radio where I lived. The progressive station WGOE I used to listen to later covered his time with he band with an occasional playing of Black Magic Woman Some of the 60's cuts they covered on a Sunday a.m. show where they went deep into the blues and such. Never came close with Kirwan and I first saw them with Welch opening for Deep Purple. it amazes me that the incarnations post-Green and pre-BN produced such great albums given the coming and goings. Much credit must go to Christine, John and Mick. 😎
@@mrcigartruth3832 One should pull up BLACK MAGIC WOMAN by the Mick Fleetwood Blues Band with Rick Vito on guitar and vocals, LIVE. Yea, Santana has two dozen players and a lot of distortion on guitar. But this makes Santana sound hoo huumm....
Bob Weston - lead guitar, backing vocals Bob Welch - rhythm guitar, vocals Christine McVie - keyboards, vocals John McVie - bass guitar Mick Fleetwood - drums (Doug Graves on second keyboard, I think)
Yeah. Short-lived player from the Heroes Are Hard to Find album, supposedly to fill in the loss to Bob Weston. Only shorter-lived member during that era was Dave Walker, who played on two songs on Penguin (and played on the supporting tour) after leaving Savoy Brown.
I saw pre-Stevie Fleetwood Mac at Painter's Mill Theater-in-the-Round near Baltimore, Maryland in 1971. They opened for Black Sabbath. Fleetwood Mac didn't have a PA. It was an all instrumental jam highlighting Christine's keyboard abilities.
Can we please acknowledge how gorgeous Christine McVie is here? Despite Bob Welch looking like a poodle wearing safety goggles in front of a giant Lite Brite set.
Me, too. The Welch/Kirwan era was when I discovered Fleetwood Mac. This era with "the 2 Bobs", and Mystery to Me is my favorite. I like Welch so much, I followed him into Paris and bought those two albums, heavier than FM, but really fine work.
Mick and Mac always attracted talented music makers. So, every incarnation was good. Although they went too pop after "Tusk" for my taste, they still made quality records.
My favorite era of The Mac ! I cut my teeth on these records.. Kiln House, Future Games, Bare Trees, Penguin and Mystery To Me ! After Danny melted down and left the band.. Bob Welch carried the band, and so unfair that he wasn't inducted along with Peter, Jeremy, Danny, Christine, John and Mick was the reason Bob was left out !
Love Bob Welch And Christine McVie !! Hypotized And Sentalmental Lady !! Love Christines Beautiful Angelic Voice ❤️🙏 🌸🌷💐🌺🍀🌼🏵️💚💚💙💛❤️🙏🙏💚🩵💙💛❤️ Forever Beautiful Sweet Humble Loving Christine McVie Beautiful Humble Loving Songbird ❤️🙏 God Bless
This was, in hindsight (always 20/20 as you know) a point when Fleetwood Mac had to reach back deep into the basic thing that made them 'get on with it', as Christine McVie said. They had just lost Bob Weston on lead guitar, and Bob Welch was having to pick up a lot of it. "Black Magic Woman" takes me back to Peter Green and both his absence and presence here. The whole history of this band is a great trip into the unfolding of a musical tapestry through time of an important Band that tells that recurrent story.
Yes- I think personally this was the band's apex- perhaps because I cannot listen to nickie without ONLY HEARing HER LITTLE NASAL THING. Like a crack of light which my OCD prevents me from sleeping. A little crack ruins my whole night
@@davidhackett1694 my fault: Bob Welch...not Wetton. Welch suffered continuously after a failed surgery on his spine; he feared he would become a massive burden on his beloved wife as his body disintegrated under him. In 2012, he took his own life.
I really loved all the incarnations of this band with all its current and former members. They were incredible how they adapted and overcame all obstacles to their continued existence. They don’t get enough credit for how well they played with each other in every era. The true fans know.
Wow, my favorite iteration of FM by far. The sound here doesn't quite do justice to how magnificent these songs are, so do check out the album versions!
Bob Welch is just too much! He was and is an incredible musical talent. I've been listening to this ever since it happened. The real music 🎶 🕉 Thank you Fleetwood Mac ✨️ 🙏 All incarnations are divine.
WHOAH!! BW putting down a lead at 13 mins or so- MAGNIFICENT- really- QUALITY NOTES , CHORDS, and tone.. But again, I SUFFER FOR HIM as he , like a pianist needing a page turner BW needed a "slide my glasses up babe"
A very faithful rendition of the mighty Peter Green's "Green Manalishi" Bob Weston did a great job of coming into the fold, and Dave Walker's ( Savoy Brown ) The Derelict" off of Penguin is always a favorite of mine !
I just Loved the way Christine always seemed to fit in the group no matter how many guys there were.. she was always the only Girl but seemed to love it! I must admit though, Chris was a Beautiful, Talented and welcomed addition and would be to any band.. FM was very lucky to have her
@straycatttt2766 Yeah; but it was never the plan to have Stevie Nick's join.. Originally Mick Fleetwoid only wanted Lindsay but he wouldn't commit unless his girlfriend (Stevie) was also hired.. the band really didn't Need Stevie, because they already had a Great Singer, Musician in Christine McVie.. That's the way in my opinion itshould have stayed. Stevie was cute but she really couldn't sing and I just didn't care for the Dark vibes within most of her songs. With Christine, the band had everything. Chris could Sing, write, play the Piano, organ ,guitar, accordion plus she was a Beautiful person inside and out.. She was very Intelligent and Articulate , Talented and Beautiful and to me she was the better of the two.. The only reason I ever l ever paid much attention to the band was only because of Chris. I so admired her and feel so bad that she is no longer with us May she RIP
They remind me of Journey. Back in the early 70's Journey was kind of a psychedelic hard rock band. Then they became a total pop band later with their lead singers.
Oh yeah - the Bob Welch years were great_ I rank their 1973 album 'Mystery to me' as one of the top 5 All Time Fleetwood Mac albums, and this track 'Miles Away' has a great Bassline_ very difficult to play that groove at that speed for that long_ The Bass just drives this song so well
Mick & Mac made the right move! 1973 it was all about 🎸 But they're Album sales were down. They were going to lose they're Record deal. Bringing in Buckingham & Nicks saved the Band!
@@jfo3000 I think the extra knobs were for the middle P90 so it could be used on its on and have its own Tone and volume Control . With most 3 humbucker customs you have no separate volume or tone control for thw middle pickup. When you flip the switch to the middle position you get the bridge and middle pickup together and the bridge volume and tone controls are shared with the middle and bridge pickups so you can't adjust one without adjusting the other . 3 humbucker customs wired the standard way are a waste of their potential Jimmy Page had his 1960 custom rewired in very early 1970 so he could add 2 extra pickup selector switches which Gave him 7 different pickup combinations plus a coil split for the bridge pickup . Sadly right after having the mods done the guitar was stolen and the person who stole it removed all the mods so the guitar could not be identified
So great here. I saw them in Tucson - early 70's. Peter Green who. Founded Seatrain. What lineups performances. We won't see shows like this again! Ever
Bob Welch was an underrated guitarist (listen to him on the Heroes Are Hard To Find lp), as well as an accomplished songwriter. He should get extra credit for being able to make a Les Paul through a Marshall stack sound like an L5 through a Polytone.
@@spaceghost8995 A Gibson L5 is a large archtop guitar. Early models (1922- 1951) were acoustics. The first electric L5 was introduced in 1951. Polytone amps are clean sounding solid state combos. This was a common pairing for jazz guitarists.
The lyrics on the first song were pretty bad. "Deep thoughts" about Hare Krishnas and Andy Warhol. Not as bad as Danny Kirwan's lyrics, but that's a pretty low bar.
I liked this line up , their sound was polished.. Saw FM not long after this between 75- 80 a number of times.. One particular show at 'Winterland' was amazing , they seemed to tour a lot back then..
The "Future Games to "Heroes Are Hard to Find' period in Fleetwood Mac's discography is definitely worth anybody who is a fan of this band to check out. Great, great music made in this time period by the Mac. I do however prefer my "Green Manalishi" done by Judas Priest.
Fleetwood Mac morphed so many time in their history, they are one of the most interesting bands in looking back at all the lineups and how they influenced its many changes of direction since the 60s
Christine is really Great. Very Jazz & Blues influenced - And Creative. After Stevie & Lindsay joined the band, she used that to create a New Sound! She just loved to play❤
@@MichaelMidgetthe sure was skilled and love them both. How was he more skilled than LB? Not saying you’re wrong. Just wondering how you are measuring their relative levels of skill.
This is so cool ! There are 3 Peter Green songs on the 1974 edition! Green Manalishi Rattlesnake Shake (only audio though - it's clearly from Don Kirshner's Rock Concert though) and Black Magic Woman! (and Doug Graves' organ is an especially great accompaniment here - I'm not familiar with him and I;m a huge fan of all FM iterations) Thank you for posting this!
@@adriang9342 Let it be known that Danny continued to play after getting sacked. It really wasn't until the mid to late seventies that things went downhill fast. There were internal issues with FM that played a major role role in his demise as well. No doubt he was unstable at the time, but not to the point where it affected the music he was putting out.
Weston's solo intro to Christine's "Believe Me" is just pure soul and gold. One of his finest moments on one of Christine's underrated tracks. glorious.
I saw them in Houston around that time on the bill with Jefferson Starship. Bob Welch kicked major ass. Went out the next day and bought a number of Fleetwood Mac AlbumsWhen a short while later, the "new" lineup showed up we were really disappointed.
The Peter Green era is the original. Hits. The live recordings are good of what I’ve seen. The Bob Welch era had a couple of hits. But the live recordings are all poor sound quality. The next era Lindsey,Stevie,Christine, John and Mick blew up . Mega hits. All three main generations produced hits. That is fantastic.
This’s the era that I was introduced to Fleetwood Mac(& Weather Report!). Led me back to Peter Green era & that was IT!! Dug Bob Welch & never realized Whatta badass Bob Weston was til now
This era was the best off-stage: Weston gets kicked out for tom-cattin' around with Mick's wife Jennie, Layla's sister, and then Mick cancels the whole tour. Meanwhile, Layla is shacked up with Ronnie Woods while she's trying to decide if she should go with Eric. And to top it off, George doesn't care because he's Maureen Starr's backdoor man. It's all true, Ladies and Gentleman!
@stormbringercoming8105 There other drugs too though, they probably dabbled in most of them. Not to mention alcohol, the REAL gateway drug, has destroyed counless relationships, families and lives. Yet legal. All you need is alcohol to totally f_(k up your life.
Qué lástima que ya no se encontraba Danny Kirwan. De por sí es difícil encontrar conciertos completos en video del antiguo Fleetwood Mac, y ahora que aparece uno, ya no figura ninguno de sus primeros guitarristas líderes.
