I covered over 17 miles on the Susquehanna the day I filmed this video, running and gunning flooded grass beds to catch smallmouth on ‪@ZManFishingProducts‬ Jackhammers and crankbaits.
Some of the footage was shot with the ‪@insta360‬ X3, which plays right into the top down Sharpie illustrations I did throughout this how-to fishing video.

Well, they do get you off the water faster if you are injured or if there is an incoming thunderstorm.

Yep. It can’t be product review videos all the time. I knew that ICAST would be a ton of product review videos, so I filmed a few instructional ones ahead of that trip.

Thanks Bradley. Know that the sides and downstream part of the grass beds become more important as things cool off in the fall.

I don’t do a standard intro for all episodes. Those clips are all from that video (as is usually the case). I figure that helps viewers preview.

Jeff I was out yesterday and saw many of your points you presented. Thanks for your time and effort doing these videos. My Torqeedo puts me in the places to fish now I just have to catch em. I need to throw the crank more. Hope to see ya on the water. I try to get out once a week.

@@TheLittleStuff it was the fattest smallmouth I’ve ever caught? I caught a post spawn 21-3/4 on May 29th that was lucky to weigh 4lb? There the best fish in freshwater! To catch.

Right on! The motor will help you explore more areas and stay hands free to get more casts in a day.

Thanks, this was really informative. Will really be applicable if it continues to rain like it has so far this summer.

When the river level drops, they position on the upstream part of the grass beds. But yes, the higher than average flow this summer has them pushed to the edges and downstream sides.

Love your videos Jeff. Always a lot of knowledge. I was gonna ask. How about a video on summertime river fishing. Where these fish tend to go. What their patterns are etc etc. was just thinking to myself there’s sooooo many videos on summertime fishing for largemouth in big lakes but you really can’t find anything on river fishing for smallies. Does the heat shut them down? Alot of questions I could ask. Fished my first tournament yesterday and got 38th out of 71 boats up in sunbury. Was happy with finishing in the middle of the pack for my first tournament. But also fished a body of water I never been at and learned a lot.
@TheLittleStuff
@TheLittleStuff 11 месяцев назад
When it’s low and clear, they like shade. They like creek mouths that trickle out cooler water. They go to whitewater and grass beds when they want to eat because that’s where the food is. They go deep to just chill. When the river rises…. Well that’s the video you just watched.
@garyhott9232
@garyhott9232 11 месяцев назад
Excellent explanation and illustrations of positioning in varying water levels. I've only fished the river once (back in late June) and found it's a very small casting window to where the fish are positioned against these grass beds. Do you find presenting a lure from downstream on these areas to be more productive or is it a mixed bag ? And do water levels play into this decision? Again, thank you for the time and effort put into each video!
@TheLittleStuff
@TheLittleStuff 11 месяцев назад
I almost always catch more fish coming up from behind them. If you think you know where they are, cast well beyond them, and angle the retrieval path towards them, coming with the current, tight to the cover, in this case grass bed edge. The tightness of the area they can be in loosens up as the river level drops. Some of that is how far away they can detect the lure’s presence. Some of it relates to how far they will swim to eat it. If there’s a ton of current, maybe they are less motivated to expend the energy to capture it.

Jeff, just curious. I’ve never seen you with an Xi3 on your plastics boats. I know you’re with Torqeedo but curious your thoughts on your decision to have a stern motor vs bow mount. I don’t have either but would think having spot lock is definitely an attractive feature.

Ask Jameson Redding. He is a river guy and has used both. His RU-vid channel is called The Roadtrip Angler.

I really need (want) a torqeedo with back issues. No peddling or paddling. What reels were you using? Thank you for the training videos you do Jeff. Your a treasure for new fishermen and experienced as well. You really don’t get the credit you deserve for all the work you put in making these great videos

The main spinning reel I used in this one is a Penn Slammer 4500. It’s heavy handed for smallmouth, but I wanted to just feel that new Rainshadow custom rod.

Question about the running and gunning. Can you cover the 17 miles you mentioned on a single battery or do you have to swap out at some point during the day? Thanks
@TheLittleStuff
@TheLittleStuff 11 месяцев назад
In that much current, as fast as I did it, I needed a second battery. It actually ended up being 20.7 miles.

You mentioned top water lures. What is your favorite? I like Heddon Torpedoes and Gaines Crippled Killers. Both are prop styles.
@TheLittleStuff
@TheLittleStuff 11 месяцев назад
My favorite isn’t very traditional- the 7 inch Scented Jerk Shad, retrieved nose up, straight back to the boat. I also love a Z-Man Billy GoatZ on a 3/0 Grip Pin EWG. It skips well and floats on the pause. For hard baits, I have a pair of videos on the HellraiZer coming out later today. Excellent hook up percentage. My favorite striped bass topwater is the Doc and Lil’ Doc. They are simple spook style plugs, but they have the right sonic thump to bring the fish up to eat!
