Jackhammer: Baitfish or Craw Profile?

I've caught them both ways. Powerfishing lends itself to the simple cast and retrieve of a baitfish profiled ‪@ZManFishingProducts‬ Jackhammer burned back at full speed. But what about a start and stop hopping craw? What's the right set of conditions for that presentation? I test out a 3/4 oz green Jackhammer with the Hella Craws and 3.5 inch BatWingZ as trailers.

Looks like you are having a lot of fun, Jeff! I just picked up a mini max for the heavily stained water that I frequent. I learned the hard way that not all bladed jigs are made equal. I lost three good fish in a creek on an "off brand" bladed jig which is what promoted me to buy a decent one after(the one I was using was plucked out of a bush, thanks bank angler!). Hooked up and fought with them for a bit but they all easily threw it off. I'm excited to see how the mini max performs compared to the failed one. Thanks for sharing your ideas and gear as always!

I’ve only used the mini max a few times. It seems like a good one to use for the craw hop presentation.

Love the bat wings

The smallmouth loved them today! Or maybe they hated them. Either way, they ate them!

I think smallmouth were born pissed off. Makes sense that the jackhammer really triggers them.

It pulls the out of the grass, up from the deep, and in from long distances, even when it’s muddy.

Fascinating tease of a video. I wouldn’t have thought to have gone that heavy, but it makes sense. Do you ever pair a dark minnow trailer with the green jackhammer? That’s my best combo

I go blue black Deizel minnow on the blue black jackhammer in muddy conditions.

Looks like the bat wings worked pretty good. The last fish was really nice. Can’t wait for the next one. Thanks for all the informative videos Jeff. The underwater with the jackhammer was great too. Thanks again

I do like the underwater footage. That second GoPro lives in there so I can always just quickly turn it on and get a few moments of that world below the surface.

Can definitely tell that is your new Batson rod, but is that the El Jefe? Maybe just your lighting conditions, but the anodizing looks lighter/brighter. Has it changed over time? Another great new combo to toy with.

The baitcaster in this video is an older St. Croix with the Bates “El Jefe”. The only Batson rods I have so far are spinning rods. That will change soon. Got a Judge blank on order!

Makes me wonder how much the lateral line plays into a predatory response. Maybe the thumping irritates them?
@TheLittleStuff
@TheLittleStuff 11 месяцев назад
It certainly hijacks their decision making process. Am I giving them too much credit?

@@TheLittleStuff I don't know what it feels like to have a lateral line, but with the senses I have I can understand being mad at something that's uncomfortable or painful.

Great video Jeff! My experience with the jackhammer is hit or miss? My river is a brook compared to the Susquehanna River, but in high muddy waters it is the only thing they want to eat. I guess it’s easy for them to hit the Jackhammer in low Visibility. Clear water I don’t do well and I have tried different presentations and different colors. I think my River gets so much pressure that they only will eat fineness baits. All my big fish have been on Ned rigs this spring and summer. I got to get over to the big river! Lol. Looking forward to the next episode 👍

George, try the green one with a craw trailer, and pause it on bottom. I do best with this tactic on reservoirs in deep water, but it works on rivers too. Yes, it’s a go-to in higher flow with muddy water.

Do you do anything to recolor the dark blade after it gets nicked up? If so, what do you do?
@TheLittleStuff
@TheLittleStuff 11 месяцев назад
I’ve powder painted blades before, but generally don’t worry about it. The flash is seldom a negative.

I think I’ve asked a similar question before but what type of line do you use for chatterbaits ?
@TheLittleStuff
@TheLittleStuff 8 месяцев назад
Currently I am throwing it on straight braid: 30 lb green PowerPro Super Slick 8.

I’m gonna try some Z man. I have done really well with a Rage blade and baby Rage craw. I wanna try those bat wings. Show em something different
@TheLittleStuff
@TheLittleStuff 11 месяцев назад
Baby Rage Craw is a good one. If you get the Bat WingZ, get both sizes. There are days when one out performs the other.

A timely video for me. I spent part of the afternoon assessing my spinnerbait/chatterbait box. Most of my chatterbaits are 3/8 oz and I split between creature baits and minnow bait trailers. I generally avoid elaztech because I worry that the lighter bait would be affected by the buoyancy. So I use zakos and I had put a bunch of smaller (3in) in my cart instead of the larger 4in. I also ordered some 1/2 oz size to pair with the larger zakos. My fear is that the larger trailers attenuate the lure and minimize its effectiveness.

I will throw the 7 inch scented jerk Shad on the 1/2 oz jackhammer. They eat it. I would eat it too. It looks alive in the water.

What shad species are in the susquehanna if you dont mind me asking?
@TheLittleStuff
@TheLittleStuff 11 месяцев назад
I don’t mind at all. But the truth is that I don’t know. They are silver, fast and on average about 8 to 10 inches long. It would take a well placed shot with a cast net to find out.
