i think you went out the right way...... there a short tunnel,then out in the intracoastal, a brief paddle south, and reenter the trail.... to go all the way down to the south end....... we're going this Sat....... looking for high/low tide info.... :)

Great paddle! I live in Florida and kayak a lot, mostly in rivers. I did the Caladesi Island paddle once, but I went to the opposite side to spend the day at the beach. I'm planning on doing it again in the fall to paddle the mangroves you paddled. Very helpful with the maps you included. 👍

Just found your page. I’m a native of the area too, born in Clearwater in 1960. Oh, the changes! If I’d gotten into kayaking I likely would not have fled to NC in ‘95. I used to sail my hobie cat in that bay. Love your vids & insightful narration. You’ve got this down! No nonsense. Henry’s homestead has been erased by at least 3 hurricanes. The coast was inhabited by the Calusa, Tocobaga, & Timucua at various periods with the Tocobaga there when DeSoto landed. It’d be very interesting to see you do a trip to Mound Key further south where their capital village & mound complex is located.

It would be neat to do a video on the specific Indians that inhabited that area of Florida while paddling through their old stomping grounds. I need to look into where Mound Key is located. I was just here. Bad thing is the kayak rental place opens late (10am). Took a long time to get to the marina. I was afraid it was taking too long and decided to go back! Made it a day of swimming instead. Next time I'll plan better.

be very careful if you get out on Caldesi Island. it has an extremely high population of diamondback rattlesnakes. (to control the rat population) if you plan on taking that long kayak 'trail' you better make sure you bring 100% DEET bug repellent and a pair of lopping shears also, those 'trails' are the result of an ill-conceived plan by the state to drain the mangroves in order to control the mosquito population. it's an ecological disaster of epic proportions that we are still struggling with today. They were created in the 50's so there's no way that someone who lived there in the 1880's would have been able to travel those same kayak trails.

As a kid, I remember hiking the trails of the island and coming across a massive rattlesnake stretched across the trail.

Thanks for the awesome video! Been looking for new paddles since moving to the area. We don't have touring kayaks, rather fishing kayaks (Perception Pescador). Do you think it would be any more difficult with this type of kayak? Thanks!

Do you have the Pescador 10 or 12’ models? Those are great boats. The 12 footers would handle most any conditions and would be easier to paddle over larger distances like this. 10’ would work fine as well, but your speed will be a little slower. Your maneuverability would be great in the mangroves with the 10 footer. Just make sure the weather and currents coming through your pass are in your favor. Safe adventuring!

@@KayakCliff We have the 10ft boats. We've taken the boats through the mangroves off Lido Key and out Blind Pass in Siesta and they seemed to do alright. Checking weather and tides for tomorrow! Thanks!

@@lostinstarsx Awesome, have fun!!! Make sure you have plenty of cell phone battery. It's handy to be able to look at your maps app to see exactly where you are in the mangroves and which direction you are going. There are many channels to explore and this will help you not get lost. Have fun!!!

How fun! If you were going to go back on any mangrove trails, you definitely want to do it on a high tide or a rising tide. There are some great tide table apps that you can download and plug in your specific location for the most accurate information.

Would you recommend this to inexperienced kayakers? We are heading there in 3 weeks and would love to kayak to Caladesi. How long does it takes to cross the water and how deep is the water from the route you took?

Thank you for the comments on the question! There is some open water to cover which includes a channel running out to the Gulf. Depending on tides, there can be current going in or coming out, so you need to account for that. It is not a bad paddle, just need to get comfortable with your kayak before you head over in that direction. It’s about 1.5- 2 miles out to the marina at the island and the beginning of the kayak trails. Just get comfortable with your paddle stroke and the feel of the kayak first, then enjoy the trip. Also, make sure to always wear your life jacket!

This is my favorite mount that I use now. Make sure you tether it to your kayak with a safety line, just in case.....

As long as weather and tide conditions are great, try it out. There is a great place to rent kayaks on the Dunedin causeway. Make sure to go with some friends as there is strength in numbers as far as fun and safety is concerned. Have fun and let me know how you like it!!!

Absolutely, I have fully transitioned over to five different inflatable kayaks from SeaEagle. Their boats are amazing! I try to limit my use of it. If I can cover up comfortably, I would rather do that. There are some good all natural sunscreens, I try to stay away from the traditional ones.

ali ASMR Thanks for your comment! It just means that you’re not allowed to take shells that have animals living in them. At least I am pretty sure that is the law in Texas. It is in Florida, where I am from originally.
