Oh Kirsty, love how you have so many different crafts on the go. I think that's brilliant. You have such a passion to learn. Love the Christmas cross stitch, I'm sure it's worth all your effort. Regarding your knitting, I have always been told that if I have too few stitches, which seems to be your problem, then use a size larger needle. Likewise, if I have too many stitches, then use a size smaller. I know that I am a very slack knitter and so I always use a size smaller, which usually works out. Very difficult as everyone has different tension. Good luck. The Jane Austen quilt will be stunning. Happy stitching.

Thank you for watching 😊 I still have to ffo the Christmas cross stitch, my least favourite part, so it could be a few Christmas’s before they are used 😂😂 I have indeed gone up a needle size and that has helped thank you, so much to learn when you try a new craft.

I have knitted since I was a child but going back to it this last couple of years it has changed so much 😂 I have been trying to knit socks for the last year 😅 got to the heel and stopped 😂 Happy knitting 😊
@craftingkirsty
@craftingkirsty Год назад
Thank you for watching , there is so much to wrap your head around with knitting, yarn weights, what you should mix with what , at least knitting and purling are reasonably simple 😂😂. I found the heel made sense after watching Kay- the crazy sock lady on RU-vid, you could see it being constructed and it was just a light bulb moment for me.

Hi Kirsty. First time watching your video and I loved it. I do all the same crafts as you so found everything so interesting. My knitting is not great. When I first got married (nearly 40 years ago!) I decided to knit my hubby a jumper in moss stitch. Bearing in mind, Keith is a 6’2’ farmer so it was quite an undertaking. Needless to say the arms were different lengths, the neck was too tight and it was way too long. Since then I have only knitted baby blankets! But I now have two little grandchildren so decided to start again. First attempt not great but second one is coming along. I love your quilting - absolute perfect piecing. Thank you for a great video.

Hi Susan , thanks for watching. I am pleased to hear you are a multi crafter too 😊 I am sure your husbands jumper was great 😂😂 I am torn on knitting for children , small projects ✅ but they soon grow out of them 😫. I am very pleased with how the quilt turned out, pre cut blocks really helped with the piecing ( I still consider it cheating, but would definitely do it again !) I will be using your voucher soon 😉

Wow! Your finished quilt top is fabulous! Love it. Glad to see you that you finished Merry Christmas - it was such a testing project for you. Bobby Dazzler was how my Dad used to describe other people’s babies and toddlers 😁. I’m no help for your knitting but you are really branching out - good for you. Hope it’s a good harvest for you this year. Happy crafting.

Thank you for a lovely video as always. Congratulations on your two finished cross stitches. The Merry Christmas chart has always caught my eye as something that would look brilliant stitched up and finished. Looking forward to seeing both those finishes FFO'd. Your Lady Tulip quilt is looking amazing and the Jane Austen quilt looks such a tricky design to figure out but no doubt be amazing too! I picked up knitting a few years ago, socks (using magic loop on circular needles) and blankets are my favourite thing. Thankfully never worry about gauge for either of those things, but I think you go bigger needle if getting more stitches that you need to reduce the stiches and smaller needles if not getting enough so that you can create more. I have knitted one blanket with those Stylecraft Heathers and currently working on a second blanket with it now, but lovely to knit with. The crochet blanket is looking brilliant, what a load of crafting you have got done 😀

@craftingkirsty Год назад
Thank you, and sorry for not replying sooner. The Merry Christmas chart is great but be warned the pudding is reasonably confetti heavy! I am now just starting my Jane Austin quilt for the 3rd time, I will eventually be happy with my colour placement 🙄. I am definitely a magic loop girl , love it! I do enjoy making blankets particularly crocheting them .

Hi Kirsty, I’ve just paused your video to answer your knitting question regarding the gauge and you being slightly off. I personally would go down a needle size, you will get a difference when you eventually block it but I would get nearer the gauge size you want as well
@Needleworkonthego
@Needleworkonthego Год назад
Enjoyed your variety of projects!My experience has been to knit the full swatch then block as I would the finished garment. Let it dry completely before measuring your gauge. Also the gauge can be different if using straight or circulars…the mysteries of getting gauge can be a challenge!!! Sometimes I win and some I don’t😉 don’t give up on the DPNs after a few pairs of mittens and socks it gets less fiddly and you conquer the ladders! You are doing great! Enjoy your summer!

Love your projects! I have been learning to crochet, but haven't spent much time on it because I always seem to want to stitch instead. I am learning from a You Tube tutorial and since I don't spend enough time at it have to keep rewatching to remember what I'm doing. I've completed one dishcloth and started another. Haven't tried reading a pattern yet. Love your blanket. Can't help with the knitting. I tried that awhile back and gave up. Crochet is going better than knitting did. Take care.

@craftingkirsty Год назад
Thanks for watching 😊 for me crochet is all about the blankets ! I can’t read crochet well enough to do much more than that. I also can’t remember which tutorial I learnt from so can never remember whether I crochet on American or English 🙄 so pretty much every blanket I have to find a tutorial 😂😂

Kirsty...enjoyed all your crafts...in trying to get guage...your swatch should be blocked before you measure your guage...I then take the measurements when the swatch is dry..I use Clover wooden needles...the metal points caused nerve damage in my fingers...I have made adjustments to my cast on stitches if I need more stitches to increase the width or adjust the length by additional rows of the sweater using the original stitches per inch to make the actual guage needed for width and adding or subtracting for the length with the yarn...best wishes ❤❤

Thank you for watching and for the advice😊 Sadly I am still at the stage if .. um I want to cast something on now! I only just have the patience to swatch for it let alone block it as well!! One of these days I will get feed up of my finished projects not fitting and learn my lesson and swatch, wash and block !! 😂
@cococreates26
@cococreates26 Год назад
Quick note about guage swatching, you need to knit a square bigger than the 4" to get a measurement, since the edges can distort your numbers. So for a 4" swatch you'd want to knit a minimum 6" square (or 6" across and 4" high so you can measure at least 4" × 2"). Also most guage measurements are taken after washing+blocking, so that will alter your guage too. Not sure if that will help balance out the guage for that chunky wool? If you are matching one and not the other, then I'd try and get your stitches to match, and then just knit less rows on your garment. That is easier than trying to add stitches to a pattern. You can also knit a different size so the garment matches your guage rather than trying to get your guage to match the garment. But that takes a little maths (let me know if you want the sums). Hope that helps? Xx
@craftingkirsty
@craftingkirsty Год назад
You are a superstar, I did indeed go back and knit a bigger swatch with the called for needles and they are all good 🥳🥳🥳 Thank you so much 😊 I knew it was more important to get the stitches than rows to match but I was a long way out stitch wise.

Great catch up! I've been going to try knitting socks for the last few years but I haven't plucked up the courage yet! I'm much more comfortable crocheting. I've done a few of Lucy's blankets but not that one - yours is looking good. Take care.

Thank you for watching 😊 I think knitting socks is all about the right tutorial for you. The Crazy Sock Lady has lots on all different needles etc, and they are very clear. I love crocheting but I think it’s blankets for me for crochet rather than clothing. This is the third blanket by Attic 24 that I am doing, I love her patterns and colours.

Can't give you any advice on the knitting at all. I'm about as "expert" as you. Glad you found a sock method that you're preferring. I'm with you though I'm not sure I'm going to be a great sock knitter. It's a lot of effort for something you put on your feet. I'm not a big fan of wearing things on my feet. I'm so glad the wool was such a good colour match - I expect to see your Bobby Dazzler outfit at Stitch London in October. You cross stitch finishes are fab too.- and I for one am jolly glad that you've finally finished that Merry Christmas! Great to catch up.

Hi Kirsty! Your WIPs are looking so great! I absolutely love the quilt hanging behind you, well done. Would you recommend laser cut quilts to a beginner? Thanks for a lovely update! Happy stitching! -Leah Noel
@craftingkirsty
@craftingkirsty Год назад
Thank you for watching 😊 laser cut quilts would be good for a second quilt attempt as cutting exactly is one of the most important parts of piecing a quilt, so having perfect laser cut pieces takes a lot of the hard work out and makes the piecing a lot more even. However some of those blocks were reasonably fiddly and as a beginner I remember making a lot of piecing mistakes, wrong sides together, stitching down the wrong edge etc. There is no wiggle room if you piece it wrong, trim it and then realise your mistake 🙄 The Fat Quarter Shop have a fantastic beginners quilt pattern and tutorial playlist that would be perfect to start with.

Wanted to respond ref knitting gauge, and can see others have already said something! I would do a bit of a bigger swatch, and exercise patience to wash and gently block. Stretch it too much, and remember every time you wear it it will shrink back again! Ask me how I know… Option 1 Go up a needle size to get the stitch count closer to gauge, so 4mm up to 5mm for eg. Check the row gauge and if v wide of target - think about decreasing the rows you work (if you can easily) Option 2 If you like the texture of the swatch - do all the maths to increase the stitch count And I only knit socks with magic loop. DPNs make me feel like I don’t have enough hands, and the tiny sock needles are just too small.
@craftingkirsty
@craftingkirsty Год назад
Thank you for watching 😊 I have indeed made bigger swatches and the gauge is all good 🙄😂😂😂 I am currently working on the Home Camisole pattern and really enjoying it. I will say I don’t think option 2 is ever going to be an option for me , Maths and I do not get on 🤪 I dread to think what shape and size I would end up with 😂😂 I don’t understand why people are so ..snobbish ..? about magic loop , I love it . Thank you for taking the time to message your advice, knitting really is a foreign language to me atm .
