What a lot of people are overlooking is how strong Tommy was even with the same day weigh in. Now imagine he was weighing in at welterweight a day and a half early to fight Floyd, jut like Floyd has done all his career ... Imagine that extra power !

Roger Mayweather was asked how Floyd would do against the likes of many legends (like SRL or Duran and etc…) and Roger responded similarly to all the hypotheticals with an answer that his nephew would either dominate or have a clear win. But even the great Roger Mayweather hesitated when asked how his nephew would do against Hearns. In fact, Roger didn’t even fully answer the question, he just left it with “that would’ve been a tricky one, yeah” It could’ve just been Roger’s slower processing at the time (I mean Roger was pretty old at this time) that didn’t let him finish his whole thought, and maybe he still believed Floyd Jr could do it, but this speaks volumes about how highly rated Hearns was in his book.

I can’t agree with that. He took fights with an undefeated Diego Corales (who was much bigger and favored to win), and with an undefeated Canelo who was 22 when Floyd was 37? Floyd took a number of difficult fights when he was well past his physical prime, even after he was forced to retire to rest his breaking down body after the Ricky Hatton fight. This false narrative of Floyd being afraid to fight anyone is a joke. If you knew Floyd, you’d know there is nothing inside of a ring that scares him. He’s more confident inside the ring than anywhere else. Hearns had physical gifts, but he had a suspect chin and wasn’t the hardest guy to hit. Hearns’ size is irrelevance if Floyd controls then distance. Floyd is playing chess, these other guys are playing checkers. The only other fighter I can think of who was, anywhere close to his ring IQ is Bernard Hopkins. The rest of these other great fighters were usually winning on account of their physical ability. But you can’t just beat Floyd with speed, power, and size.

Tommy's left hook to the body is the most under-appreciated punch in boxing history . He pulled left hooks to the body from way OUTSIDE . I've never seen anyone do it.
@SPIDERM0OSE
@SPIDERM0OSE 2 года назад
He had a fantastic left hand, very versatile. Left hook to body & head, lead uppercut too. Hooking off the jab or even just leading with the hook. They were all prepared for his Atom Bomb of a right hand so he had to develop a magic wand of a left hand to set that right hand up. His jab was so good its all that gets acknowledged but Tommy Hearns had probably the most sophisticated/effective lead hand in modern era boxing (since 1980) Only Roy Jones can argue.

I saw the Barkley fight(s) and you are absolutely right about Hearns' hook, either to the body or the head. He had Barkley hurt bad to the body.....besides busting up his face. I think that Barkley just had 'Hearns' number'... in any fight that they might have fought. @@eddielester3589 Sure, Hearn's had a suspect chin at times, but I don't think that Floyd had the power to even gain any respect from Hearns. My two favourite fighters of all time. Honestly a match up I've thought about a million times. As much as I love Floyd and I know he's seen almost every style and handled them all but I can't help but think that Hearns would be Floyd's kryptonite. I just don't see Floyd getting passed that length and power. I could go on and on and give a full breakdown but in short, if I had to put money on it, I'd go for Hearns.

This is one of my dream fights too. I always felt Hearns was his worst mythical opponent as he could pick him off with straight jabs and bombs at range. I have always said that there is no way Floyd Mayweather Jr could defeat Tommy Hearns. Rummy explained it perfect in this video. How is Mayweather even going to get to him. Tommy's jab would punish Mayweather and then the right hand comes and discombobulates Mayweather consistently if he can even survive one right hand. Remember no one has ever outboxed Tommy Hearns ever. Tommy Hearns has fought some of the best fighters of all time in those weight categories and he was never outboxed. Mayweather simply does not have the size the strength or the punching power to keep Tommy off of him. One way or another Tommy will win the fight most likely by KO!

- I think Pernell win against Duran at 135 even tho that sound crazy in unanimous decision styles make fights. Duran vs Chavez ? That’s an all time banger I don’t know who won maybe a committed Duran. - Prime Canelo beats Ward in a close fight maybe by split decision. - Sugar Ray won either by Knockout or decision against Floyd. Leonard was at his best at 147. We saw what he did to Benitez who was naturally bigger than Floyd and have kind of the same style especially at 147 by the only difference that Floyd might have throw more punches. - Prime Mike vs Lewis : Thats a tough one 😁. But I think if Lennox survive the first 5 round he might be able to pull it off in a close decision.

I dont really like this hypothetical match up. Floyd had a great career, at the end of his career at 147 but he was really at his physical best when he was younger at lighter weights. People tend to forget how dominant Floyd was at the beginning of his career at light weight. He was knocking guys out and stopping fighters. He became the defensive genius and going the distance when he moved up and was fighting bigger guys. Matching with hearts at 147 for a hypothetical fight is not the best idea. How about a hypothetical fight with Duran at light weight.

As the late great Emanuel Steward (who was Thomas Hearns's trainer) put it, throughout his entire career, Hearns never had much problems with "boxers" who want to get it done technically/tactically. Floyd is a brilliant boxer, but his style is simply too measured, almost to the point of being too "inactive" to win enough rounds against Hearns. However, if this hypothetical matchup happens, I bet Floyd would include some kind of clause in the contract (especially when it comes to the weight) to make it more favorable for him.

Mayweather vs Hearns is an intriguing question. Floyd's ring IQ is 2nd to none, but "The Hitman" could get you outta there quick if he connected, and that could happen at any time during a 12 rounder. About the closest we came to seeing that kind of match up, was when there was talk of Mayweather fighting Paul "The Punisher" Williams, who at 6' 1", was still fighting at welterweight (and was going through the division like a buzz saw). My understanding is that Floyd wanted no part of "The Punisher."

This is pretty much the way I’ve always seen a fight between these two. Leonard got Hearns’ respect when he hit him in the 6th but he then gambled and turned stalker, he went on the offence. I don’t think Floyd would be able to hurt Hearns as badly as Ray did because he didn’t have the same power but the big difference is that he wouldn’t gamble and stalk Hearns. Mayweather was conservative by nature he wasn’t a gambler. When he struggled in the first Castillo and Maidana fights he wasn’t willing to gamble to turn things around. Those are fights that he lost in my opinion, especially the Castillo one.

Castillo I agree with. That was one of those fights that could go either way it was so close. Now Maidana I don't agree with. I remember thinking Floyd had some trouble but I think he adjusted enough and got it done in the end. Now with Hearns, I think Floyd finally might have seen his match THOUGH Hearns did not have a good chin and people highly under rate Floyd's power. I think Floyd could have hurt him enough IF he could adjust to the Hearns.

Thomas Hearns should win this either by clear decision or stoppage. Yes he was KOed during his ring career but by bigger power punchers than Floyd Mayweather Jr. And Floyd Mayweather Jr doesn't have enough punching power to take Thomas Hearns out here. Also if Floyd Mayweather Jr was getting hit by power punches from Shane Mosley and staggered. Thomas Hearns will also find the target too and he hits with considerably more force than Shane Mosley . Thomas Hearns also has too many physical advantages in a matchup between himself and Floyd Mayweather Jr. And Floyd Mayweather Jr can't win with just an occasional few accurate counters in such a matchup. He would have to open up far more than he usually does which would also present more chances for Thomas Hearns to land with both jabs and power punches. And people underestimate Thomas Hearns speed the reason he gave even Ray Leonard major issues in their fights was because he was also fast with his hand speed. Floyd Mayweather Jr will be on the back foot and defence here unable to launch enough of his own effective attacks. Thomas Hearns has too much for Floyd Mayweather Jr overall in this matchup.

Just a fantastic essay on this dream match up. You really covered a lot of permutations at both weights (154 and 147). An absolute pleasure to watch. Out of the Big 4 of Hagler, Hearns, Leonard and Duran it is the Hearns match up that may offer Floyd his best chance of victory. The Hagler fight would have to be at a catchweight, but if they weigh in the day before Mayweather may just outweigh Hagler at the fight's start. He cannot hurt Hagler. He cannot hurt Duran. He can maybe really frustrate Duran. In the Mayweather Leonard dream match up Leonard just has that intangible of willing himself to win. He suffered a detached retina in the first Hearns fight, took a ferocious beating and still walked away victorious. Ray would take way less damage against Mayweather, and he would hurt Floyd too. You did mention about Mayweather's underrated chin. This is something I have only recently noticed in his fights. He does get hit hard in some fights, but his powers of recovery are fast and he knows strategically how to weather the storm. These clips you show here just demonstrate how quick Floyd was in throwing the right punch at the right time to score. But in all four of these match ups he is going to get hit more than he did in any other fight.

It's great to see someone on here with a channel, who truly studies and loves boxing. Great analysis. We have ENOUGH Floyd groupies out there. Don't get me wrong, Floyd is truly brilliant, one of the best defensive boxers of all time and maybe the best boxer [ boxer, not fighter ] of the last 20 years and could be the last of the old school technicians. I absolutely agree with you mate and actually I do respect the fact that you conceded that, yeah, Floyd could have a chance, because you can never really say never when it comes to boxing. ESPECIALLY when you are talking about the true greats. There are many who think Floyd would have no chance. I think this is slightly unfair on fair , but only slightly, cos Floyd never REALLY pushed himself. He didnt engage in hardly many 50-50 fights at all, let alone attempt the impossible, like challenging Golovkin or Hopkins. Even against Hatton, he had a word with Joe cortez before, to stop him getting near him. It's a shame, because we could have seen another or even two more gears from him. THEN we could talk about in the same league as the Sugar Rays, Ali and Henry Armstrong. Hearns at welterweight at the time, could have ONLY been defeated by Leonard. The biggest problem for Floyd, as the gentleman says, is that Hearns was a master boxer. It's irrelevant on TWO levels, because not only did they fight in different times.. even if they did.. There is NO WAY that Floyd would have signed to fight Hearns... and oh my days.. at Light middle.. forget about that to.

Rummy you couldn't have done a better job.You put the weight factors in perfectly 👏. I think the only way Mayweather gets Hearns is when things go Hearns's way he can get cocky and get careless by doing so.For example when Hearns hooks that left to the body he doesn't bring his left back up to block the counter.This is how Barkley was able to knock him out in the first fight. He did so also in dropping him twice in the second fight.Though Mayweather was a Boxer puncher in the lower weights ,he didn't carry that same explosiveness when he fought at the higher weights.Hearns carried the same power as he moved up.He never lost it.

Great matchup and analysis. The way Rummy's Corner breaks down fights and fighters is the best on RU-vid. Yes, Hearns had a great...great left hook to the body and the way he hooks off the jab is another good tool in his arsenal. But....sometimes, after throwing a combination, Hearns will stop and admire his work. Gil Clancy mentioned that fact while announcing one of his fights. Mayweather was a great fighter but, even with his great defensive skills, had a hard time with fighters who threw more than 2 or 3 punches at a time and, high work-rate boxers. Hearns, with his quickness, reach and boxing ability to match Mayweather's, would win a decision. E solo la mia opinione. Grazie.

Hearns would win because he had the jab, right hand behind it and most of all Emmanuel Steward was his trainer. I see no scenario that at either 147 or 154 Mayweather would beat Hearns. Hell Mayweather would not have beaten Sugar Ray Leonard or a prime De la Hoya or a prime Sugar Shane Mosley. Mosley was 38 when he fought Mayweather. Imagine Mosley at 30 years old. De La Hoya was 34 when they fought. Imagine a young De La Hoya. Floyd's record would be 48-2 if he fought those two guys in his prime. Mayweather is still an all time great.

One factor I think a lot of people ignore when it comes to this matchup at 147 is the inexperience of Hearns. When Hearns lost to Leonard he was only 22 years old. Floyd would be 29-30. Dead in his peak. Experience is why Hearns lost to Leonard. He hadn't gone many rounds late. Hearns had no idea of how to hold. Hearns had a bad tendency to drop his hands when he punched which left him exposed to counters. That's how SRL was able to hurt him. With a counter punch that Hearns didn't see. Hearns had only been a pro for 4 or 5 years. Floyd would have been 10-11. Even Leonard himself wasn't that experienced. He was just more experienced than Hearns. He dealt with adversity that Hearns hadn't seen yet. I think Floyd's experience would play a major factor.

Excellent analysis. For the longest I have seen it the same way. At 147 against the Hearns that fought Leonard, Hearns would outpoint Mayweather and take the win. I believe Mayweather could survive to the final bell due to his superb defensive skills, as did Benitez. Leonard at 147 was stronger than Mayweather and the only way to beat Hearns would be to KO him, as we saw with Leonard and Hagler. Hearns height, movement, and ability to use the powerful fast jab to score and stay out of reach would be too much for Mayweather and he would not be able to counter effectively enough to consistently outscore Hearns. Mayweather still stood a chance but the odds would have been in favor of Hearns.

in almost very big fight people would bet on against Floyd, they couldn't see him winning and most of his fights he won easily, very few people gave him a true challenge. Hearns, Leonard, Hagler, Benitez, Pryor, Duran, among other legends of the 80's were true warriors however Floyd is one as well he is just more modern but as time goes by he will fit into the legendary category as well. The man was just too smart, Hearns was stronger than him, Leonard was faster, Hagler was more technically sound, Duran was more aggressive however none of them were able to adapt and adjust to and every fight the same way Floyd did, he was just phenomenal at that. For some reason he is always underestimated. Maybe because of his money persona or because of his overly defensive style but he was a genius in the ring plus he was a good technician, had good speed, though he lacked power however was vey precise and had stamina for years. We'll never know if he had a good chin because it wasn't really tested all that much. But there hasn't been a boxing genius like him able to adapt to any fighter and make adjustments mid fight even against faster, stronger, or better overall boxers he would just get their number. I don't believe he was unbeatable, we jut never saw it, his chin was never truly tested how much punishment he would be able to take before binging him down or out no one really got that close for us to make an educated assumption, and we'll never know however for all the yeas remembering people betting against Floyd and then him winning almost easily I wouldn't count him out or diminished his chances against any boxer even against the fab 4.

You are overestimating Floyd technical ability compared to other all time greats. He's not the only one with boxing iq and skill, Hearns had one of the best jabs ever, great footwork, he knew how to control distance and with deadly fast hands. It's just not the best match up for Floyd, Hearns would have a 5 or 6 inch reach advantage and he would make full use of it, Floyd can't counter a guy he can't reach. I've heard people sayin "but he beat Corrales he would do the same with Hearns", that's just ignorant, Corrales has nothing to do with Hearns

This is just a bad stylistic match-up for Floyd with Hit Man having an incredible jab, a huge height and reach advantage along with a Hydrogen Bomb of a right hand. Hearn's weakness was obviously his chin so unless Floyd could catch him and exploit his chin, Tommy could simply stay on the outside, jab and out-box Money all night perhaps finishing him in the later rounds. I don't see Floyd out-boxing either Hearns or Ray Leonard.

That’s exactly how I see it. Hearns UD or late KO. Floyd’s massive reach and height and natural size disadvantages are just to much to overcome. He squeaked by a past his prime Oscar and was nearly KO’d by a washed up Mosley. Oscar and mosley are small welters coming up from 130. Hearns beat beneitez was beating leonard and beat Benitez. Also crushed Duran. Benitez was as good as floyd and a natural welter. Floyd doesn’t punch as hard as learned and doesn’t have his height or reach or combination punching. Floyd only ups his punch rate when the other guy slows down. Look at Hearns like Oscar on steroids. When floyd gets hit hard anywhere he goes into defensive mode. Then he is left sitting on the end of Hearns freaky jab. Floyd was timid of Oscar’s power. He would be more scared of Hearns even greater power.

Thank you so much for making it known that Oscar and Mosley was well past there primes when he fought them. He also barely beat Oscar. When Oscar stopped jabbing I knew he was going to lose that fight. Also Mosley just stopped throwing punches after round 2. Mayweather loses too both of them in their primes. Mayweather fought a lot of legendary fighters that were no longer in there primes. Those are straight facts

Great, great video. My boxing coach told me years and years ago that a good, well-educated jab will nullify a puncher, boxer or speed-demon. With Hearn's fast jab, I believe he would either box Mayweather, or, using the jab, set up that right-hand and end the bout before the final bell. Again, grazie, paisan, for the videos. Keep up the good work. I actually thought that Mayweather's uncle Roger threw better combinations than Floyd did.

Floyd out boxes him at 147 and we have to take in account how smart Floyd was outside the ring. He made Canelo cut weight. He would’ve never fought Hearns at 154.

The only way to beat Hearns is to go to war with him. Hearns was capable of outboxing Leonard in both fights. I don't see Mayweather going to war with him and Hearns jab will keep Mayweather in check if he tries to go to the distance. Hearns is a matchup nightmare for Floyd.

One thing is for sure, if Mayweather got caught with a right hand by Hearns similar to the one he got caught with by Mosely, he would not be 'making adjustments'.

People don't give Floyd's chin credit. He had a great chin he didn't avoid every single punch, but when he got tagged he would recover the very next round and come out smoking. Tommy is a Legend no doubt about it but I am going with Mayweather on this one💯👊🏾🔥🔥🔥🔥

No matter what weight they fight at, Hearns gets Mayweather outta there inside of 5 rounds. Floyd would not be able to get inside at all and even if he did, he can't hurt Tommy! In fact, Hearns would hospitalize Floyd due to severe trauma and possibly end Floyd's career!!

Mayweather would wait for Hearns to turn 40, then he'd accept the fight, claiming that he wanted the fight 12 years earlier.

That is one way. But what if Hearns declines? I don’t know, Foreman after all after age 40 was still championship level to a certain extent. Its like if Michael Spinx fought a Mike Tyson at 1996.

This is not even a match. Hearns was 6'2 against Mayweather's 5'7/8 and he had a jab and right cross that could KO any Welterweight of an era. Furthermore, Hearns had exceptional boxing skills and a reach that was incredible even at Lightheavyweight. Hearns all day!!!
