On this episode of Repair Geek we find out if my Fluid Film application from last year stopped any rust. The short answer is yes... Fluid Film works. I also show you what the same truck from last year looks like after a fresh application of Fluid Film undercoating. I also am including my own truck in this test because, it is the make and model of truck as the one I recorded last year.

Haha , hey man I just fix cars just like you and that includes trying to find the best remedy for rust! I am buying the FF in 5 gallon pals now and offering it as a service to my customers. I am surprised to see how many folks would rather just let their car rust out instead of paying for the service every year. Oh well. I still spray mine at a minimum once a year.
@RepairGeek
@RepairGeek 5 лет назад
True, but your level of diagnostics is way beyond what I’ll ever have on this channel. Service information is too expensive for a guy fixing things on the side after work. I think the majority of the reason Ziebart is easier to justify for people is, it has a “nice” look to it and it’s apparent something has been done. With FF, unless you’re looking for it, you don’t notice it.
@SouthMainAuto
@SouthMainAuto 5 лет назад
No way man, don't sell yourself short! If you need information to fix a car add it to the bill. For example Honda Service Info: $20 a day FACTORY SERVICE INFO! GM is 3 days for $20, Ford $22 for 3 days and the list goes on. You can just buy as you need it and use it to fix the car. With all dealer level information. Just something to think about any how. Let me know and I will post a link for you to look at. I am sure it will end up in your spam folder though.

I've undercoated my truck once a year in October for years now with Fluid Film. Drilled doors and tailgate and fill it up as well. Even hit electrical connections. For example lightly coating the connections for any bulbs on the vehicle. I live in Northwest PA smack dab in the rust belt. It works great. Wouldn't use anything else.

Good to know!!! We have been using Fluid Film for probably 20 years, mainly for getting things broken loose.. we also use quite a bit when reassembling equipment. Absolutely LOVE the stuff!!!! We are in northwest Oregon, very little salt is used on our roads, but it's damp here most of the time, but we have used it to protect a few things... We've always used diesel on our fertilizer buggies and manure spreaders.... Might have to try some fluid Film on them.. Great video! Thanks!!

You can ‘season’ the exhaust similarly to how you season a cast iron pan. It works. Peanut oil is likely the cheapest product to use for it. A few applications are needed for building a nice coat

Isn't it easier to just take it apart and use high heat paint and bake it in the oven a few times? That way it is like protection for the grill it will never rust.

FF is great for INSIDE, doors, unibody channels, frames, rockers..etc. because it will stay on longer. Been using Husqvarna Summer grade Bar oil for over 36 years in northern Vermont and it will stay on external surfaces far longer than most other oils.

Going to have to look for this stuff. I’ve been using cans of WD40 Specialist “Spray & Stay Gel Lubricant” for this same thing. I’ve been spraying it on everything under the car every October since I bought it 5 years ago (new) So far, it seems to be working quite well for me here in PA. About the same results as you seem to have here in this video. I even have the same issue with it spinning off of the CV axles (FWD car) and similar areas seeming to look like they have been hosed off (I had been attributing it to my constant spraying the road debris off the car so often all winter long though) Whatever the brine chemical solution is that they use on the roads here in PA, it sucks. It eats everything! QUICK!

My Honda Civic stared rusting where the rear quarter panel meets the plastic bumper cover next to the wheel. I've been dosing the area with Fluid Film every two or three months. It certainly stopped it from rusting any further. If you own any Chrysler product here in the Northeast, especially the van, you definitely need to use this stuff.

Any exposed area like the front of the a arms you can always smear grease on it. The grease stays on fairly well and as long as you keep a fresh small layer on your good to go. I tend to wipe what’s left of the old off everytime I apply new.

Been using Fluid film up here in Massachusetts in my Plow truck (2009 F250) for 4 years. Good results and worth it if you want to resell it someday. Just have to keep up on it if you do plow. Wash away the salt and neutralize it and reapply a few times. If you do plow the front end/front diff/rear quarters/suspension to the back gets hit hard. Especially when you plow for a 20hr shift lol. So reapplying in major conditions is a must. May look to POR 15 in these areas and use FF as usual. Happy holidays!

Being in PA we know about rust, I am currently trying to see if waterproof grease will stop further rusting on already lightly rusted equipment around the house and farm like the frames of a lawn roller or disc that are out in weather 24/7. While a little messy to apply a light coat with a stiff brush makes fast work of it, might just have to try it on my truck frame and parts.

Awesome videos on Fluid Film - thank you! I've got a rusty Land Cruiser and it's past the point of saving, but I plan to replace it next year with a southern rust-free vehicle. What if you applied something like CRC or Amsoil MP HD to the painted surfaces first in the areas that catch the most road-wash, and then apply Fluid Film over the top once the that stuff cures? In theory, that should really help the front of the Diff, u-joints, CV's, etc. I'm never dealing with undercarriage rust again - it's exhausting.

Do you wash your wheel wells out in the winter and not worry about coating the frame in that spot as your washing it more often and it's visible or do you just touch up with a can ? I'm not washing the underside however more curious on your thoughts about the exposed frame in the wheel well locations thanks!

I just did a one year reapplication of fluid film on my 2017 ram 1500 pick up. I originally used fluid film when I bought it new in September 2017, I took five days taking my time to rust proof the truck because, in Pennsylvania, they use salt on the roads in the winter. So applying fluid film is actually an attempt to protect my vehicle from salt corrosion. My last truck was the 2008 GMC Canyon pick up four-wheel-drive. I read the owners manual when I bought the truck, and in the manual, they stated that if I undercoat that vehicle, I would void parts of my #Warranty. I thought about that and figured that that must be good, because General Motors has a lot of confidence in there corrosion protection under the vehicle. So I didn’t under coat .. In Pennsylvania you have to have your vehicle safety inspected every year. The last time I had that truck inspected, the mechanic I take it to told me, it’s a crime what is happening under this truck..this frame especially in the rear is not going to last too much longer. I only had 42,000 miles on that truck, and the heaviest thing I ever carried in it was a washing machine and once I carried a picnic table kit. That’s it. It was basically my personal transportation, it was not a work vehicle. On that GMC that I kept for nine years, I lost the brakes due to corrosion two times because the lines were rotted, and the fuel pump plumbing corroded while I was on a trip, and that cost me $1100 to have the vehicle towed and the fuel pump replaced because corrosion rotted it. That’s when I decided to buy a new vehicle and I was going to undercoat it no matter what the owners manual said. So when I bought my ram 1500 Big Horn 2017, like I said, I took my time and took five days to undercoat it. I pulled the headlights and tail lights for access, I took the tail gate access panel off so I could Completely spray the inside of the tailgate.. I took the spare tire down, I pulled all the wheels and covered the discs with plastic bags, I took the plastic inner liners out, I pulled all the plugs along the rocker panels. I bought special tools for going way up inside the door posts and the frame around the windshield all the way up to the roof.I gently pride up the rubber mats on top of the chrome bumpers and saturated under those mounts with fluid film because the bumpers on my GMC were rotting under those mats. I pulled the runningboards off because I believe they were a dealer add on, so I wanted to be sure that the hardware for the runningboards where they attach to the frame was coated with fluid film and then reassembled... I used about six of the spray cans of fluid film, and half of the 1 gallon can of fluid film I bought on eBay. I also bought the spray gun on eBay , and I bought the 4 foot long plastic flexible tube that attaches to the spray cans. That has a jet in the end that forces the fluid film to spray a 360° pattern . I also made my own tools out of rubber hoses for reaching inside tough to reach places. So when I climbed under my trunk now a year later, for a tuneup on the fluid film application. I am Happy to say there was very little to complain about under there on my truck. They were a few little spots on the U joints that I missed last year that had very little rust, and a little bit on the rear axle housing were the brake calipers blocked the spray of fluids on last year. I didn’t want to get any on my brake pads or on discs so I was very stingy with the fluidfilm in those areas last year. Even though everything looked great, I still re-coated The frame the insides of the bumpers, the driveshafts, the drivers, just everything that I did last year, making sure I got way up inside those rear fenders because of all makes of trucks I see rusted, it seems that the Dodge trucks rust the fastest if they’re not undercoated.. when I see a rusty ram truck sitting somewhere, I look to see where it rusts,on all four wheel arches, the bottoms of the doors, the rocker panels, the tailgate, When they finally start throwing salt this season, I am again going to do what I did last year, and that is, I sprayed the Chrome bumpers with fluid film for winter salt seasoning, and left it on there all winter. My truck has chrome mag factory wheels, and I sprayed all of the lug nuts with fluid film also and left it on. As well as on the wheels I spent 4 hours applying 3 spray cans and about a quarter of the gallon that I used half of last year on my truck this year. After seeing the results or year later, I am confident that fluid film will protect my truck again this year. I plan on keeping this truck for a long time, because I’m retired, and I bought this truck is a gift to myself. I have never been without a truck since I was 17 years old. The longest I ever had a truck was the one that I had before the GMC. It was a 1978 Ford Econoline van. I sprayed that truck with New 20 W 50 motor oil, and not used motor oil which has acid in it. I only applied that oil one time when the truck was new, and that truck lasted me 31 years until 2008 when I bought the GMC Anybody considering undercoating there vehicle, fluid film is great stuff. Buy some spray cans and by that Long tube attachment for the spray cans on eBay, I think I paid $14 for it. And buy a gallon can and the spraygun on eBay, I think the paired together cost $70. The cans of fluid film they sell at Lowe’s for $9.99 a can. Fluid film is not that messy, it’s not dangerous to your skin. It’s actually good as a leather conditioner according to the label, I tried on a leather belts and a pair of shoes, it works fine. It’s not hard to clean up after you get it on you. The reason I mentioned that it’s not dangerous to your skin, is because I used a product called POR15 Attempting to save my GMC from rusting more than it was,which is a black paint rust protectioncoating. The warning labels on that product are pretty scary. I completely covered my hands and arms with long sleeve shirts and I were goggles. But I still got some on my wrists because I was applying it with a paintbrush. I ended up going to two different doctors because I got that on my skin. My skin looked like I had a severe case of poison ivy, it was called folliculitis. That stuff does not come off your skin. I used lacquer thinner, mineral spirits, kerosene, it doesn’t come off. So I would not recommend using that. Another reason for not using any type of paint that you have to apply with paint brushes, you can’t get it to flow into the cracks and crevices that water will flow carrying salt..To get complete protection and coverage you have to use something that is a liquid and never hardens. That’s fluid film

I went to all the trouble rust proofing my ram because the sticker price on it was almost $50,000.07 of the guys I work with have driven nothing but ram 1500‘s for years. They swear by them. I myself am not a Chrysler van, having had a 68 Dodge Charger just like the one in the movie bullet . That was a pile of crap. I swore I’d never buy another Chrysler product. And I didn’t for almost 50 years. But I gave fords a try, when I learned that the new F1 50 has to have the cab removed for any service to the engine and transmission, I would never go for that. And I had a GMC, when I saw how ridiculous it was to try to change the front brake rotors on my 2008 Canyon, and you have to pull the motor to change the timing chain? Really??? So I did my homework, and climbed under the new Chevy/GMC trucks, and climbed under the Dodge ram, there’s quite a difference. Some of the brand new Chevy Silverado I was under were already rusting brand new on the lot under there. And as I pointed out in my long long story about fluid film I put on my ram 1500, and how I wish I had known how fast GMC Chevy trucks rust, I wish I had used fluid film on that, even though the owners manual said I would void the warranty if I did. I keep my trucks for many years. I kept my canyon for only nine years, because of the rust, it only had 42,000 miles on it when I had to get rid of it. But the truck I had before that I kept for 31 years. It was a Ford Econ align E1 50, six cylinder with a three on the tree manual shift. It was a stripped down box. I swore I would never buy a stripped-down truck again. So when I bought the ram, it is loaded, Including heated steering wheel and seats which I have never had. Besides, I liked the dual exhaust on the ram 1500 HEMI

Rams are very nice trucks and in my opinion they rust the least. Ford and ram both paint an undercoat on there trucks chevy/GMC only dip there frames in wax therefore they rust much quicker. I own a 2006 ram 3500 that is In excellent shape and I'm in rust belt Utah. 222000 miles on the odometer. Fluid film is great stuff

I'm wondering if this stuff is needed more if you are driving a truck versus car, or more so if your vehicle does not live in a garage when not driving. My 98 Dodge Grand Caravan held up good (Chicago Salty Winters) until 2016 (230k) Was garage kept. Wash & wax summers & try to spray salt off under van during winter warm ups. Underside of 98 Volvo has no rust or deterioration at all. (Unheated garage)

Hey, man. Thank you very much for sharing this undercoat product info and updates. My concern is that I am not expert in this car industry. I wish to do the spay myself, just wondering if there are any updates on 1. which parts of the vehicle you would recommend to focus more on, 2. what are the dos and do-nots... thank you again.

how would one expect it to stay on after washing the under carriage in an automatic car wash? I would think for winter driving, it will be washed quiet a few times during the season. Don't know how many washes before the fluid film is gone.

I spray around 70 psi or so. You may need to warm up the FF in a bucket of hot water if you are not getting a good spray out of it. Just put the lid on one of the bottles that goes on the gun and drop it in some hot water for 5 min or so. Thanks for watching.

Quick question if you apply fluid film before winter should you pressure wash undercarriage once a week as well or would the fluid film just wash off ? Do you wash undercarriage if fluid film is applied ? or is it good enough with just the film ? So my main question is do you wash undercarriage with fluid film applied ?

I know a trick for the exhaust. Spray it with Armor All. It will burn off, and you have to keep doing it. But it will soak in and prevent rust. I have a 21 year old muffler that I did this on a 2 cycle engine. It is bronze color now, but no rust! A friend told about this because they always put Armor All on their company truck tires. They needed some fender work done and the body shop raised hell about it because the fender would not hold paint because it had soaked into the metal.

Spray it right over existing rust.

Excellent video. Boston, MA Usually I rinse the undercarriage of my car with a garden hose after a snow storm to get the salt off - But if I spray my vehicle with Fluid Film I wonder if I should stop this? I ordered a 6 can spray can kit with a chassis tube adapter since I do not have a super nice compressor & lift like you do.

@@awilliam1 I bought a compressor & now spray Woolswax (thicker than Fluidfilm) on the undercarriage & fluid film on the inside of the body panels. It works awesome - Zero rust. I wash the undercarriage in May & in the heat of August reapply a fresh coat. I figure for 4 hours labor/year I will prevent rust & keep my car for 5 to 10 years longer maybe more.

2 gallon pump up sprayer from Ace and used hydraulic, transmission, linseed, tung oil, thread cutting oil, 140 gear oil. Heavy on the linseed. Use your mad scientist skills. Great to have around for all lube and rust prevention issues. Looks/smells like fluid film has a linseed oil base.

Chevy truck were known to rust very quickly at the belly without any aftermarket rustproofing. Especially the 2010 and older. While the manufacturer owner manual says it not recommended and will void the warranty.
