Flying an Ultralight into Rain!

The weather was beautiful this cold March day, with temperatures in the 30's. As I took off from Lebanon I was keeping an eye on some dark black and gray rain clouds to the south close to my final destination. I was hoping i wouldn't get wet, but the rain snuck up on me anyway as I made my way home. I destroyed my wingtip GoPro Hero 5 Session camera in the process. It won't even power up now. RIP little GoPro!

The thought of getting caught in heavy rain in a light plane with an enclosed cockpit is something I use to get to sleep at night. Great video as usual, glad you are back!

That is a huge amount of up trim. Maybe adjust the angle of incidence of the horizontal stab ?

The sun rays look like that because of perspective. The same as how railroad tracks seem to narrow as they get further away.

I plan on buying or building one in the next few years. Have my eye on a Legal Eagle Xl to start b/c I know VW engines, a little about wood and think (pray) I can learn to braze well enough for the frame. Now I just need somewhere to build it besides my apartment! Although...

Really amazing! I'm thinking: Do you remember the skywalker time? we flown a lot of hour looking an LCD, and now we fly for real! Now you are owner and pilot of one amazing UML (it's look awesome, maybe a little bit tight?) and me are a glider pilot. To be honest I'm thinking to buy someting like that having engine. But the FPV? have you stopped? Often, in the bad weather season I fly. BTW compliments captain 😋👍

Yes my friend, we have come a long way for sure. I have not flown my trusty Skywalker in several years. Probably not since like 2014 or 2015? It's been sitting in it's transport crate ever since my first flight in my Hurricane. Every time I do think about taking the Skywalker up again, instead I decide to fly my ultralight, because it is so much more fun! I used to love watching that little LCD screen, and try to fly far, like maybe 4 miles or so. These days I take off in my ultralight, and I fly as far as I want, sometimes 150 miles in one day! I fly as high as I want, and I can still fly low if I want to, skimming over fields at 5ft off the ground. There is simply no comparison. Once you stop flying FPV and fly the real ones, there is no turning back. It's like trading in your Matchbox cars for a real Camaro or a Jeep or something. Nobody plays with toy cars once they get their first real vehicle.

mmatt - yeah I had to remove the waterproof cover in order to run power to it constantly. So it was unprotected on every flight including this one.

Any chance you can dry it out in a bowl of rice for a few days...? Sometimes that gets it running again.

Wish I lived in an area where Part 103 cross country was a reality, I've done it HG and PPL but if not for our class Bravo I'd have skipped the PPL.

The aircraft is a bit nose heavy, but that will be solved when I mount my 20lb BRS ballistic chute behind the gas tank. I should have it in a few weeks.

By 30s i imagine you could mean Celsius? Obviously if it was in the 30s, Fahrenheit, one wouldn't attempt to play with ice. Edit: post script- 30s is a range that is huge in Celsius. 10 degrees in Celsius is easy to think of as around 20 degrees of Fahrenheit. But that only is an easy guesstimate trick for above 32 of either metering.

your 2 cycle engine is going to quit running one day as you circle your friend. Hope you have enough room to land on his roof. It gets real quiet fast when that engine quits and you only have the sound of the wind gliding back to earth.

No requirements in the USA. A 12 year old kid can fly one with zero training if he wants to, and if he has a death wish, but he would be legal.

Yeah, My LYNX has the ability that I can play music while I am flying. However, I probably will never do that. Just seems a little foolish. I am more interested in paying attention to how my engine is sounding, if it is picking up ice, etc. I will probably never listen to music while flying. Maybe, but probably not.
