Here is my long, overdue review of the Massdrop X Focal Elex. These are the most immersive and intimate headphones I have ever heard.
1. Worst editing job ever - can only get better with practice, lets hope :)
2. Focal Elex uses 3.5mm mono inputs not 2.5mm mono as stated in video

Really enjoy your reviews - the way you explain everything in context, and especially how you put every aspect of your review in to a relative, relatable perspective. Your take on the Hifiman HE4xx, and my experience with my pair was spot on, and the nuances so easily understood. Keep it up!👍

I apologize as I said the paperwork from Focal states 100 hrs of burn in, not accurate, Is not mentioned at all. I was thinking of another headphone. Sorry for the error.

Hi David Thanks for awesome video. Not so many reviews about Elex. Highly appreciated for help during my 3 months research. And as the result: Just got mine few hours ago!!!!!! My came without cable bag??? Bought directly from Massdrop. But my was delivered by three different couriers (inside US, from US to New Zealand, and inside New Zealand) and had done two customs clearance checks. I guess, may be it has been lost during customs inspections. For some people who asked compare with HD800S: Luckily, I have HD800S and other high level headphones. My personal preference: HD800S > DT1990 Pro > Elex >TH-00 Ebony > etc Have mentioned only dynamic drivers as the planars on the different category. You can see my setup on Massdrop website: under the ''Let's see yalls rigs'' category with my comments: .....'Christmas is coming. Time to find another good headphone. This is my study/bedroom setup. Now I understand what Zeos is talking about....... Even you can leave some comments there, I will try to answer to all. Regards, Kim

Just got the Focal Elex and I think they are my End Game headphone. Had the HIFIMAN Sundara which were great too... but the quality control issues scared me off so I returned them on Amazon. The only thing I don't love about the Elex are the cables are just too stiff and short. I think anyone who wants the next step up from the Sennheiser 6XX line... the Elex is probably your headphone. At least for my purposes. Music... FUN Gaming(not for Pro FPS players) and for TV/Movie watching. It's a Triple threat. Best under $1000 headphones. PS- I recently Sold the Elex. The clipping/distortion at higher volumes with Bass was a deal breaker. Drove me nuts. Actually solid them for more than I bought them for!! 😁

@JTB Awesomeness. I am glad you are enjoying the Elex. The cables are stiff and meh but useable, I recommend that you replace them with a Dyson Audio cable. End game level, I can see that for the sub 1k budget. I don't recall the brand of the digital fireplace but I got it at Sam's Club, works great.

Great review. What was your reference headphone for you to review the Focal Elex?

Thank you for the kind words. To be honest I don't recall as that was 2 years ago. My gear has changed so much since then. I do know that I didn't have the HD600 at that time. When I first started out on my channel I was searching for a reference point, my channel is a journey of my audiophile experiences. At this time of my journey I think I was using the Superlux HD681 Evo, Hifiman HE4xx, Monoprice Monolith M1060 and ADV Alpha as my normal everyday listens. Sorry I honestly don't remember.

I've been watching your channel on search for a good pair of studio headphones. But I'm confused, would you recommend a particular headset for mixing?

@isaias Castro I would not recommend the Focal Elex for mixing. I would recommend the Dan Clark Ether CX in a similar price point of the Focal Elex.

David how hard Is to drive off aune ! Does the aune volume knob get to 3/4 ? Thanks! Another great review! Thinking about getting elex but must make sure is the right one for me ! From your description of sound it appears like my Beyerdynamic T1 ( second gen ) which by far is my best sound headphone ! What do you think about durability?

The Elex are fairly easy to drive, especially with the Aune X7s. On SE the volume is around noon or 1300 for too loud and balanced the volume is 10:30 or 11:00 for loud volumes. Of course that varies with source and song. Durability isn't a concern for me, the Elex are built extremely well. Thank you for watching and thank you for the kind words.

T60 Argon or the Elex?

Haven't heard the Elex in a long time, probably 3 years or so. It's a decent performer but it's showing it's age. Sennheiser 660s2 would better choice now. But I've not done a side by side comparison.

I no longer own the Elex, sold them to purchase the Ananda. Going off memory, the Elex has fuller sound but not as natural, slight metallic timbre, aggressive upper mids, brighter treble, wider soundstage but not as accurate imaging. Please note that I've never had them side by side to compare.

DT1990 have a bit more sharp and precise highs, giving it a somewhat “crystalline” timbre for the highs. The bass on the DT1990 aren’t as good as Elex. If Elex was water, DT1990 would be ice. They are both very close to neutral, but do slightly different things.

I am sorry, I've not heard the HD600. I've only heard the HD700 and I would take the Elex over them everyday.

@@TheHonestAudiophile The HD700 is considered the worst headphone in the sennheiser hi-fi series though. I've tried A LOT of headphones and haven't yet found any that could compete with the HD600 and that includes the HD650 and HD660s. I might try out the Focal Elex sometime, but they're also in a complete different price category.
