I've uncovered some clips from 2013's broadcast of Thanksgiving Live on Food Network, hosted by Ina Garten, Bobby Flay, and a sassy Giada De Laurentiis, and obnoxious Alton Brown. Even though the network buried this episode we still have enough to break down the gender politics on display durning this messy broadcast. As always, don't forget to like and subscribe! The casual picking on Giada reminds me of the way my sister and I were casually teased/picked on/bothered/harassed by the men in our family from a very young age. It was always framed in a “hey, this is all just joking harmless fun” kind of way, so if you finally got sick of it and asked for it to stop, you were the uptight overly sensitive one who needed to lighten up and learn to take a joke.

Gotta say, every goddamn culture has food. Everybody makes food, everybody eats it, every culture has dishes they're proud of. I don't know why Italian tv chefs are the only ones so fucking obnoxious about it. It's like they think Italians INVENTED food and no other culture ever has ever come up with any sort of recipe. I occasionally watch a Mexican and a New Orleans-sort-of-Cajun cooking show on PBS and they're just like "food is neat!" and then you'll get Lidia Bastianich on and she's like "this is the ITALIAN recipe I learned IN ITALY where food was INVENTED by Romulus and Remus and also my grandmother, I can cook because I'm Italian and Italians know how to cook, we're so great at it, here's a ravioli." It must have been a sizable wound, elevating her finger would slow the blood flow to her hand, the cold room would cause the vessels in her hand to constrict to slow the bleeding, and the sugar is to raise her blood sugar so she doesn't pass out as a precaution (that's why you have juice and cookies after donating blood!) I distinctly remember the end of the dream being like the end of the Thriller video. I have absolutely no idea what made me have this dream other than possibly burnout and exhaustion from midterms. I'm a man, and I've had both men and women in leadership positions at different jobs. And, from my experience - women are far superior in leadership positions, and some of the men have frankly been just flat out awful and abusive. I don't know why this is, but, I'm guessing part of it sadly is that women have a lot harder time getting promoted to leadership positions, so they have to really fight for it, and are generally gonna be more talented once they finally get there, it's a much tougher road ahead of women for sure on that front. I also just find that in general they have much less ego and care more about the team performing well as a unit, compared to some of the men I've worked for. So yeah. Let's do everything we can to give more women the chance to thrive and reach their full potential.

when you think about it, part of the 'cost of masculinity' is posturing a sense of power and control. A woman in leadership position would only have to pay that price to gain the respect of men who also value a leader who postures as strong. All other people are just relieved to have a leader who isn't interested in playing the BS game of waving their dick around imo Though, in some cases, women have to adopt the Stong Posturing in order to get accepted into a mostly Masc Man workplace, which at best gets them listened to and at worst has them labeled a bitch. Also (this doesn't need to be said to inform, just to highlight the topic), when a man is a bitch, it's because he's passive. When a woman is a bitch, its because shes assertive.

I love that "it's okay for an italian person to speak with an italian accent" is something it took us as americans like ten years to figure out. I'm not even being sarcastic. The process of a culture being brought to this country and slowly transforming into something totally unique and different from both parent cultures is quintessentially american. And then we try to tell people who actually come from the parent country that they're pronouncing these words wrong because, frankly, within the specific cultural niche of x+american they ARE pronouncing them wrong.
@SampfanCresta
@SampfanCresta 2 года назад
Italian words and dishes remain italian pronounced, however Americans screwed them up and changed them. Ofcourse every nation has the right to mispronounce italian words and food but let's not ever pretend the mispronouncation is right. Giada pronounced everything italian correctly.
@riri12566
@riri12566 2 года назад
@@SampfanCresta I hear you, it's unfair to say that Giada is wrong. She's from Italy and she's pronouncing it all like it would be said in Italy and that's not incorrect in the slightest. The thing is immigrants in the us have always created a new culture and to some extent a new way of speaking that's distinct from the parent culture. Like how Italians will say Italian-Americans pronounce Italian words and even their own names incorrectly or cook Italian food wrong or just aren't culturally Italian and Italian Americans don't like it because, at the end of the day, they aren't trying to be Italian. Italian American is its own culture. But also you're totally right that shading Giada for how she pronounces stuff is unfair. Like I said, it's okay for an Italian person to speak with an Italian accent. I just honestly really love how immigrants to the us have thrived even divorced from their parent cultures by creating their own culture and how that culture becomes a totally unique, inimitable way of life. It definitely makes Americans a bit defensive sometimes (and I hope I'm not coming across that way bc that's really not how I mean it) because people act like the unique immigrant culture doesn't count because it isn't all the way Italian or all the way American when in reality it matters just as much.

Very insightful comments. I agree. It’s odd that, for example, Italian Americans don’t pronounce the “o” in Prosciutto but..all vowels are pretty much pronounced in Italian. Italian Americans clip the last vowel of nearly every Italian word for some reason I haven’t yet figured out 🧐
@user-br6kk9oo7p
@user-br6kk9oo7p 2 года назад
Except she is not pronouncing all of them "right" (or at least in a natural way) either: she is pronouncing them exactly as someone who was born in Italy but grew up in the US. Case in point: fettucinI instead of fettucinE. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, but the fact that she (at least judging from this clip) acts like an authority on authentically Italian pronunciation is ridiculous. Americans of Italian descent have a very interesting history and rich cultural and culinary traditions which are valid and iconic in their own right, even though they are entirely different from their Italian counterparts: people like Lady Gaga for example should promote that specifically Italian-American culture, instead of "I am Italian", which they are not.

Alton Brown performed at the community center where my mom was in charge of special events (aka she was the one who thought of trying to get him there and organized everything surrounding the food festival he was the entertainment for). We lived right outside of DC and the community center was in a very affluent area and got millions in donations every year, so it had an actual theatre, green room, lighting booth, etc. It wasn't the fanciest place he'd ever been but it's a really nice community center. Anyway, he was picked up by one of my mom's staff in a limo and treated really well because honestly everyone was a huge fan! But the whole time he was just needlessly rude to everyone and kept talking shit about the location being beneath him and treating my mom and her staff like they were idiots. He refused to (or tried to refuse? It's been like 11 years and I wasn't there lol) do a meet and greet for cookbook signings because he wanted to get out of the "hellhole" he'd been booked in. I was a massive Good Eats fan and my mom's experience totally soured my enthusiasm for all things Alton Brown. Now I see him and his offbeat humor and it's just so clear that he's an asshole lol

The main issue is that Alton started off very condesening and sarcastic and Giada just gave it back to him. Yet, people will most likely go after her since she's a woman. She may be annoying to some but at least she's not blatantly rude like Alton was to everyone the whole time.

This was so stressful 😭 There's no way I'd be able to watch the whole thing through. It's amazing that Alton and Giada had careers after this, their behavior seems amateurish

Right? This level of awkward confrontation makes me super uncomfy.

I love this but Alton Brown is DEFINITELY not known as the “nice guy chef”. He is notoriously sassy and pretentious 😂

I really hope you'll do more of these on bizarre Food Network shows! The Thanksgiving and Christmas ones are always a trip 😂

Omg I am thrilled to pieces that you’re talking about this. I first heard about Thanksgiving Live from the Page 7 podcast, and it remains to be one of the most unhinged pieces of media I’ve ever seen.

I had almost forgotten about this and as soon as Nick started recapping it I was like “Wait - this is that thing MJ was obsessed with on Page 7!” I’m glad to encounter another Page 7 fan out in the wild. ❤️

I don’t see my toxic family for thanksgiving anymore so I’m gonna rewatch this to feel the familiar tension. Festive~

I honestly think that Alton and Giada were both incredibly drunk. That by the time it was time to eat they were GONE. And honestly I’d probably get drunk too if they forced me to work on thanksgiving lol
