If she'd gone through Candy Cane Lane with a beloved relative or friend shortly before they passed, and she had all these wonderful memories of that person making the event magical and that's why she wants to go back every year, it'd be an actual plot line. Candy Cane Lane being over is like losing that last connection. The two leads could bond over that, over holidays without loved ones and the people who made them special again.
