While I knew that New York Minute was a record breaking flop upon release in 2004, I had completely forgot that it was basically 90 minutes of racial stereotypes strung together by a rather annoying plot. It's not hard to see why this was the last film that Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen were featured in together. As always, don't forget to like and subscribe! Fun fact: my dad was undergoing months of surgery/chemo at a hospital that happened to be very close to set while this movie was filmed. He only found this out because one day he snuck out, IV pole in tow, and started wandering the streets before he saw the Olsens and realized he’d walked right into filming. I haven’t analyzed every single frame of this movie but given the production track record I fully would not be surprised if at some point you see an emaciated man hauling an IV pole down the street in the background

I feel so bad for the Olsen twins... The way they were exploited and their entire childhood was taken away from them is disgusting. Now that Britney is free, and people are paying more attention to the way the media treated Lindsay Lohan and other pop stars, I hope someone makes a documentary about them and exposes the people around them, because they really failed the twins.

@spooniejusticewarrior
@spooniejusticewarrior 2 года назад
@@Hiiiiiiiiieeee honestly, "enabling" does more good than "tough love", at least to an extent. We need to decriminalize drugs, have better, evidence based treatment programs (not 12 steps, but MAT and therapy), and we need to have safe use sites. Places that have done this has seen a major drop in overdoses and overall addiction. People are more likely to seek treatment when they are treated as human beings with a medical problem than as criminals who are the scum of the earth. Addiction is often causes by mental illness and trauma. If "enabling" someone's addiction gets them through the day, they might go seek treatment the next day. But currently our system and society heavily stigmatizes addiction, so it's really hard for them to be motivated to get help.

I went without lunch before to buy a homeless man whatever he wanted for lunch, he wasn't asking for money but food or art supplies. I figured that I know where my next meal is but he doesn't so I got him enough so he can make 2 meals out of it. That is so true about just giving homeless people money for the love of god! Got a kind of a crazy story and I’m sure people will have their opinions but just to further prove your point.. we had a homeless man named Tim who was an addict living by us. He always sat and asked for change a block away from our house bc it was right by a busy on ramp. We grew pretty fond of him over the years and would always stop and give him spare money, change and yes sometimes food. One winter my brother broke his arm pretty bad in a ski accident. He had to get pins and all this crazy stuff done to his arm to fix it. He got a script for like 120 strong pain pills. My brother wasn’t down for taking them bc we have plenty of family members who struggle with addiction. So he just gave them to Tim. Which I didn’t think was the best idea! Especially when weeks went by after that and we didn’t see him! But!! Like two months later my brother ran into him downtown and asked where the heck hed been?! He told my brother that getting that script was just what he needed to feel good enough for enough days straight that he was able to wait in line and make appointments to get his social security straightened out, temporarily emergency housing, and other services . He was then waiting for a bed in a rehab center. It’s amazing what you can get done when you don’t wake up feeling like you are dying!! Imagine having to deal with that. We haven’t seen him in years, but we really hope he’s doing well and think about him often.

It's a vicious cycle that can be nearly impossible to get out of.

Yeah, it’s risky to accept food from a random person, or for anyone (especially women) to accept a drink from a random person at a bar/party. If offering food to a homeless person / someone on the street, it should be pre-packaged and fully sealed (water/juice bottle, granola bars, lunchables, etc). I remember watching this as a kid at the theater. I'd let the bad Asian rep slide since I was used to seeing us as either mystics or gang members onscreen, but I remember cringing and whispering "ew" to myself when Trey(sp?) walked into the room and asked "Is it my birthday?" Like he visibly appears much older than the twins, and the fact that he had the (disgustingly common) fantasy of getting to get it on with twins was so gross. Thinking about twin, and just siblings in general, fantasies still weirds me out for any and all genders to this very day. Like incest is not wincest as fun as the rhyme is, y'all :/

Tbh I do think there’s something alluring to kids about the plotline of being abducted in a movie. It allows them to play with the idea of being independent away from their parents and introduces a little bit of fear but also a little bit of confidence because the kids in the movie are capable of getting up to crazy antics and accomplishing things that are basically miracles without the help of adults. I’ve noticed that a lot of kids display fantasies that involve being orphaned or kidnapped and a lot of kids stories have those plot elements as well. Running away is a common one as well. I would guess it’s because the fantasy allows kids to feel that independence and manageable fear but return to their parents at the end, or fantasize about getting adopted by some kind of cool found family, like Harry Potter and the Weasleys/Hogwarts in general. Kids can act out normal frustrations with their parents in that kind of fantasy play, too, when they pretend they don’t have parents/have new, cool parents, which is also why I think so many kids movies have the plot of “I wish my parents were different! Wait actually my parents were great the way they were!” Anyway, I’m just kinda guessing. And no, I don’t have any psychological explanations for why the characters get undressed so much in this movie. That’s probably just a Hollywood predator thing.

No one should ever be given power over strangers. That is always a dangerous situation. Because you don't know each other, there's no trust, and often no empathy, just whatever the person in power is feeling at the time. Even when they're "good" and do stuff to help others, that's still just because they felt like it in the moment and they could have chosen not to. When my mom was being stalked by a creepy ex, she told the local patrol officer and he blamed her and started being aggressive towards her and harassing her. When the ex broke into our house and wrote "whore" on the wall, the cop did nothing and we were forced to leave the state, but the ex followed us and hit my aunt with a car. He went back to the original state and reported my mom to that same officer, who then did some digging and found out my mom didn't report to the welfare office one week. She was put in jail for the weekend and it was on her record for 21 years, which made it harder for her to rent, get a job, or do anything that had a background check. Anyone who wants power over strangers is a disgusting person and shouldn't be trusted. My mom's current boyfriend used to be a cop and he even agrees that it's a corrupting power. You can choose to just not pull someone over because they're cute ~ or yknow, you could just pull someone over because they're a person of color. I really hate it when people bring up cops like they're this force for good and safety. They are literally just there to attack and abduct civilians for the government. That is it.

It’s so refreshing to hear someone with the same stance on the whole “I’ll buy someone food but I’m not giving them cash” when they encounter a a homeless person. It just always seemed way too sanctimonious to me like you’re somehow superior for giving someone in need something they probably didn’t ask for. If I’m giving someone that’s in need something I’m going to give them what they’re asking for, it’s not my job to judge their life or what they’ll do with that money. Truthfully it’s your money and you have every right to say no, but like you said, it’s tragic but if someone is an addict and that’s why they’re on the street, it doesn’t make it less sad. I feel like there is more than likely something in their life that was so tragic they probably started self medicating then lost everything to the addiction because America is basically the worst country to be in when it comes to effective treatment for addicts that doesn’t cost 10s of thousands of dollars or more. I just feel like if I’m going to give someone something it’s going to be a few bucks like they’re asking. You know, maybe they need the money for a shelter that night, maybe they need food later, maybe they want cigarettes because that’s the only thing that they get any enjoyment out of, or really maybe they’ll die if they don’t have a drink or something (since withdrawal from alcohol can literally kill you), I’m not about to judge someone’s life that I know nothing about, and if I have the money I’m going to try to help. If you don’t want to don’t do anything, no one is obligated to give their money to anyone asking, but don’t be judgemental about it.

Your take on giving the homeless guy money was so good. It brought tears to my eyes. So many people completely misunderstand addiction and are harsh and judgmental. You're a beautiful soul.

A lot of the time people don't really know how addiction works. After long use, you're body will develop a physical need. It's not just a want or strong desire, but something that you could legitimately die without. I work in a rehab center and have seen several people be hospitalized seizures due to a lack of alcohol. For an addict it can almost feel like going without food or water, and addictions set in quick. It's nice to see that Nick is using his platform to talk about it. A lot of people I know look down on drug addicts without ever knowing anything about addiction and the first step is education.

The disrespect of non-white people and cultures is almost impressive. They didn't even have an Indigenous character to stereotype, but they still managed to wedge in some appropriation by hanging some kitchy dreamcatcher from the the rearview mirror of that RV. wow, such masterful filmmaking!

I misread that as “non-white people and creatures” and had to do a double take. 😂

Not sure if you saw the Indian gas station stereotype scene? Every single god damn movie has to have this and somehow no one seems to acknowledge this apart from the harmful portrayals of Asians and Black people in this stupid shitty movie

I didn't watch this film as a kid but I'm pretty sure that seeing MK & A running around in towels would have just made me feel really stressed and horrified for them. Those shots definitely weren't in there for the child audience! Also all the dog throwing would have upset me so much!

Odd note but the type of dog that is I believe is Chinese crusted or crested kind of giving me a theme of Asian racism in this movie …

Yus, I love watching you roast early 2000s films, it gives me a great flashback to my childhood era while also allowing me to reanalysis toxic stereotypes and issues the media used in films that I never noticed as a kid

The scene where the guy sneakily stuffs the chip in Roxy’s purse is filmed in Toronto. I recognized the GO train instantly, as I see them every single day.

The way you explained drug addiction was spot on. You REALLY understand, many people doesn't. And you explained it so clearly, because that's really how it goes, you need the drugs even to get the basic thing done, like getting food, as you said. Thank you for this, maybe it helped someone to understand better about addiction. 🖤
