The biggest thing I learned from Jordan was to buy meat on sale and cook based on what I already have. Before I always make a list on what we want to cook that week and shop once a week. Now I buy whatever is on sale and figure out a meal plan based on what I already have.

Living rural a big pantry is a huge help and almost a must with just about anything from food to cleaning to personal hygiene. Keeping it fairly basic and stocking what is used regularly and are favorites will insure everything gets used. Im sure I could go for a very long time just living off the pantry. Next year I will shoot for buying certain items in bulk and more longer term shelf stable items like freeze dried.

@@lisadavis1655 it's not a bad idea to freeze all or most grains. I personally don't and have only had an issue one time. But in the past I haven't stored more than a few months at a time. Now that I live in the mountains and with all going on with the world, I am looking at storing more. So I may start freezing it. I'm sure there are articles online that could guide you in proper freezing and storing techniques. And there are plenty of Homesteaders and preppers here on RU-vid thatay have that info. One tip: for the same reason why it might be best to have paper towels and not rags is why you want to have canned broth in long term storage and not bouillon paste. If you're in a situation where you don't have water you can cook your rice, beans, pasta, boxed meals, etc with broths.

Great tips!!! We have lived in Houston for the past 15 years and have seen several natural disasters. Having food storage is essential here. Besides that, job uncertainties and food shortages are happening. Be wise, but stock at least some. Jordan's right, water bottles don't last long term and reusing milk jugs is bad as they will leak, but 2 liter bottles won't! So freeze 2 Lt bottles and keep your freezer cold longer in power outages!

I am on the east coast, in the southeast. I have never seen a case lot sale. However, if you go to your local grocer and ask they will often give you a case discount. Don’t go at the peak times. Price turnover at the store happens on Tuesday evening or early Wednesday for the sales circular. Sometimes if you can get it at that time you can also get both week’s discounts.

Great tips. Could you please do a video on proper food storage. You mentioned airtight containers for flour, sugar, beans etc... Maybe a video on what container for them. How long they last in those containers, at what point do you use that flour and restock it, and can you open an airtight container to use flour from it and then how long does it last if your opening and shutting it? What all should you transfer to airtight containers, list of basic must haves, followed by what to get after the most important must haves. Dos and don'ts you've learned over time. For example, you mentioned powdered peanut butter over regular peanut butter.

If you can do a mix, that is best. Each has pluses and minuses - canned requires no water, great for when water is scarce however heavy to move. Dried can last 30 years when properly stored and they're also significantly lighter in case you need to schlep food to new location. Ideally longterm emergency storage should have a mix to account for varying potential issues.

If the average price of the pork loins you showed for example is $3.75 per pound for the last 3 weeks but this week it is a BOGO at $7.25 per pound, it’s not really a BOGO. Then we just write down what we need to buy on the shopping list.😉 We buy flour, sugar, salt, canned vegetables (corn, peas ...), pasta, biscuits in larger quantities (because there are 4 of us together) ... I don't like semi-finished products, but in case of emergency we have bags of cooked meat in the warehouse, which have a long shelf life.😊 I agree with you that homemade broth is the cheapest and most importantly the healthiest!🤗

Case lot sales are often found in Utah. Sometimes other places. The Mormon or Amish areas do them a few times a year. We have a small grocery store here in Southern Colorado that does it like once or twice a year. Also military bases do them but you have to be either active duty or a vet I believe. Certain areas of the country, sadly do not but you can look at canned goods. If it’s a lower unit price, say a can of green beans is normally $1 and they are on sale for 50cents this week. You best believe I’m picking up at least 10 cans. So that’s a way you can do a “case lot sale” without being an actual case lot.

@@chelseagarchar4338 Yes! You can ask them to bring you a case from the back to make carrying and storage easier. The main reason I do it when I’m buying that many units of something is because it will have the best expiration date. It pays to be flexible and creative when trying to save money. Thank you Jordan for all you do.

Just two weeks ago I bought a couple of flats of 6 oz clamshells of blackberries at our local grocery store's case lot sale. They ended up being about .63 per container which is phenomenal. I also got a lot of strawberries for a great price, too, and put them in the freezer for smoothies. I love case lot sales!

We keep a hurricane box for ready to eat canned and pouch food. Black beans and tomatoes is one of our go to combinations, as well as canned fruit (mandarin oranges, pears, applesauce). During one hurricane I lived off of peanut butter crackers, applesauce, and coconut water. We made oatmeal and coffee on the BBQ pit outside and my parents and brother ate tons of canned tuna. If you have salt, pepper, garlic powder, and sugar you can make pretty much everything taste good.

And I have been buying extra medicines as well, like pain relievers and vitamins and extra drink packets like Gatorade. A lot of shelf stable things. Buying now and putting things back for bulk supplies is smart thinking. And if nothing does happen then you have extra to give to food banks later. I'm in the UK and out kitchens are so small we can't have a back stock. I maybe have 3 tins of bakes beans, 2 chopped tomatoes and that's about it lol. Though i don't know why I would ever need to stock up. In my 32 years the water or electric has never went off for more than an hour maybe twice and if the world was ending I would just off myself anyway cos I don't wanna live through that 😂

I'm in the UK and live in a 25m² studio, with no storage cupboards but I've managed to store a surprising amount. Condense what you have in the kitchen by stacking and using various kinds of racks, then put up shelves and use additional spaces such as on top of cupboards, under the bed or behind the sofa etc. You can find space if you need to. It's not about the world ending, it's just sensible given the current supply disruption and inflation. (The past doesn't predict the future. Look up normalcy bias.) It's also makes cooking easier and more enjoyable as you can be more spontaneous.

The point of storing chicken broth is so that you don’t have to use your water stores to cook with in an emergency situation. I love better than boullion too! It’s cheaper than canned broth and the flavor is ✨chefs kiss✨BUTTT-that being said- Water can go very quickly and it’s hard to store enough for more than a few weeks at a time. If you can store canned broth it can really help when you’re trying to stretch your water stores for an unknown length of time.

This was an excellent video! If I may input a couple things that have saved my family a lot monthly.... #1 The toilet paper POM BRAND at Sam's Club has proven to save my family a ton of money. The rolls last a little longer then others. We have saved about $40 a month just by switching to POM toilet paper. #2 For everyday paper towel useage I bought those huge bundles of wash clothes from Wal-Mart like 4 huge bundles and we use those to clean the house and just Lau red them with together. I save over $100 a month just by using bulk wash clothes instead of paper towels. We stock up on paper towels but rarely use them and save them for emergencies where we don't want to use the "cleaning wash clothes".

Did you know you can freeze potato chips? A family friend knew a guy who worked for a chip company and he told her to put bags right in the freezer and if you have chips at cook outs and you don't want them to get stale because of being out in the heat, roll the bag up and place in. Your cooler ( not in the water) and they still stay fresh and if you have left over chips and don't think you will eat them right away ,place them in a freezer bag and they will be fresh. Believe me freezing BBQ chips are the bomb!! The chips don't freeze solid they are just really cold when you get them out. I have been doing this for years and it really works.Just FYI!

Always check expiration dates to make sure you can use it all in that amount of time and also know availability at your local stores. My local Walmart has been low on basics like green beans so if its about the same price and right in front of you BUY IT! Some things might be out by the time you get to Walmart

This is a great video! I didn’t think about peanut butter going rancid. One thing you DON’T want to keep on hand is Velveeta. No, it’s not nutritious, but a lot of people do use it. It has a shelf life of 6 months. After that, it starts looking pretty bad. We’ve tried canned chicken, beef, and pork at Costco and they are all really good. One thing to consider, regarding dried beans. If you are in a situation where water is scarce, you DON’T want to have to be cooking dried beans and using your precious water, because they take a lot of water. You could cook and can ahead of time, but if you’re in a situation where you need to flee your home, for whatever reason, you don’t want to be hauling glass jars of food around. They can break. 😢 So, keep some canned beans on hand, in case you are in a situation where you need to flee.

What Walmart seems to be in the US, Aldi is in Germany (low pricepoint). Aldi is the best store here, imo. The one and only downside is, that they have more of a smaller selection. So they don't have everything. We always buy the main part of our groceries there, and only go to the "big ones" for two or three "special" items.

I write the "best by" dates on my items that don't have a super long shelf life (basically anything that's not in a can) so that I can easily see at a glance what I need to use up soon. I store flour in 5 gallon buckets with a lid and write the best by date in wet erase markers (not dry erase) on the outside of the bucket so I can make sure I'm rotating that properly and using the oldest first too.

Hey Jordan! I'm hoping this is at every Walmart, but I just discovered you can buy a case of veggies online! They're not available for pickup, but you can get them shipped to your house.
