Great video !!! It brings back a lot of memories of clamming in the south bay when I was younger , We used to walk the bay with a old truck inner tube with a cooler ,for the clams, and some hot sauce and horse radish !!!! eat , save some !!!!!. When we collected a bag full , used to sell them on the dock to the NYC restaurants . Used to fish for Fluke and Flounder, before the trawlers came into the picture .. My buddies family had a dock and house on the water and we would come back clean the fish and his mother had the deep fryer set up , man that was some good stuff !!!! I also used to walk the sand at Jones beach at night for stripers with a surf casting rig , fun time .. I have since moved away and I miss those good times . All the best , be safe ,be well ,bob k

Many in my family clammed off Long Island out of West Sayville. Next time check out Long Island Maritime Museum. I haven't been in several years, but it has had great clamming and oyster history there. Always had fun treading for clams. It allows you to get clams without added equipment. Plus tonging or raking not as possible in shallow water like that. Favorite for me is baked stuffed clams on half shell.

Some of my wife's family live to the west in Sayville. Yes that breach of Fire Island has definitely helped fishing in the Great South Bay. Really has helped flushing the bay out from the breach to the Inlet. From the drone video it looks like it grown quite a bit since the last time I saw a picture of it.

See you can feed yourselves and have fun on the water with minimal stuff, just like regular folks. Think about that to get other folks engaged into the outdoors that may have been intimidated by it or to just to be okay with minimal stuff. I mean the Azores fisherman still fish with hand lines in deep waters. I hope that remembering your friends from growing up and the ties you have was not because of stuff...gives you an opportunity to grow!

love your videos. but !!!! (theres always a butt) to open a clam properly , you don't slide the clam knife across and split the clam meat in half like that ... you got get that knife tip up and under that top shell, and release the meat from the top shell, then go under the clam meat and release it from the bottom shell with the knife tip , If you dont you see all the clam guts, (black stuff ) and its kinda gross. It should be like a clam bubble with the brine still in it .... i hope that you dont take that as critique its just how you open a clam .... thanks for your video entertainment really enjoy the show ....

Just know this: Brian is harvesting shellfish illegally since he is not a resident of the town. He did tell me His Grandpa was the mayor of Bellport for 20 years he told me though. Not sure how that matters?
@cgspies
@cgspies 2 года назад
Brookhaven Town (where they were) doesn't require a clamming permit for residents or non-residents to clam recreationally. You should "clam-up" and stay in your own lane there "Karen."
@ronsfishingadventure
@ronsfishingadventure 2 года назад
@@cgspies I just contacted the Brookhaven Bay Constable. You are incorrect in stating that non residents are allowed to harvest shellfish in our town waters. In addition the fact that you are employed by NY State Dept of Conservation and dont know this? So why dont you "clam up" and "read up" before defending Brians poaching of this resource.
@cgspies
@cgspies 2 года назад
@@ronsfishingadventure why does my reply keep disappearing?
@cgspies
@cgspies 2 года назад
@@ronsfishingadventure (I guess having a link in my reply was automatically deleting my reply, anyway...) You were told incorrectly by the bay constables. You're probably lying about that anyway, just to continue arguing. Read the Town code yourself: "§ 57-3Restrictions for nonresidents: A nonresident shall not gather, take or attempt to take, either on his own account or for his own benefit, the benefit of any other person or for sale, any shellfish from Town-owned land, EXCEPT AS SET FORTH IN § 57-5 OF THIS CHAPTER. § 57-5Exceptions to permit commercial required: A. A resident of the Town of Brookhaven may take no more than 100 bay scallops, soft clams, hard clams, or oysters or any combination thereof or 300 mussels from Town-owned land during each day of the open season, excluding Sunday, and in the manner hereinafter provided, for the sole purpose of consumption as food in his or her own household (noncommercial purposes) without obtaining a commercial shellfish permit, provided such shellfish are taken in conformance with Articles II and III of this chapter. (1) A resident of the Town of Brookhaven desiring to avail himself of the privileges hereinbefore stated shall display proof of residency in the Town of Brookhaven to any harbormaster, constable or peace officer upon request. Failure to do so shall be prima facie evidence that such person is not a resident of the Town of Brookhaven. (2) It shall be unlawful for any resident to take shellfish for noncommercial purposes with any device other than a hand-held rake having a head no wider than 14 inches measured perpendicular to the tynes and a straight handle not in excess of seven feet in length or by any means other than use of a resident's hands and feet. Possession or use of any device or aid other than as described above shall be presumptive evidence of an intent to harbor shellfish for commercial purposes." So, as per section 57-3, non-residents may recreationally take clams as per the same rules as residents under section 57-5. And what does my job w the state have anything to do with Brookhaven Town codes?
@ronsfishingadventure
@ronsfishingadventure 2 года назад
I messaged the bay constable . He told me your interpretation of the law is incorrect. I requested to speak with him on the phone to get an explanation so i can explain and understand it myself. I am not looking to conrinue to argue, soley looking to clarify what the law is. Once I talk to him I will update you.
