Ford 4x4 F250 popping sound when turning solved, Hub Ball Joint Locking Hub

I have been trying to track down this popping noise coming from my front drivers side tire area for about a year. I had looked at everything thing and could not solve the problem. I looked at the sway bar, track bar, ball joints, hubs, body mounts, etc.... It only made the noise when I made right hand turns and going over bumps. The problem was a stuck passenger side locking hub. Even though the hub was unlocked the tire and 4 wheel drive was enabled on that tire. This kind of killed two birds with one stone. Since my tire was still locked its was spinning the front differential and driveshaft. This in turn made my truck feel sluggish. I thought there was something wrong with my engine because I thought I was loosing power somewhere. I was ready to buy new hubs and seals and replace everything. I'm glad I decided to jack up the truck and check to see if a tires were locked. This weekend I have to take my locking hubs and inspect, clean and grease. Thanks for the post! My 2017 f250 had the same problem and it was starting to piss me off. I couldn’t find where the popping was coming from and you just saved me a lot of time and money. Appreciate it!!!!

Thank you for posting this - and it was so simply. I had looked several times at my 4x4 setting, but I missed the fact the hubs were in the Locked position. Unlocked them and "clicking" and turning resistance went away. Thanks.

Same thing happened on my 2010 F250 Super Duty. It’s all gotta come apart (hubs), clean, inspect, replace and broken or badly worn parts, grease, reinstall and operate manually a few times, then operate with vacuum. Should take care of anyone that has this problem. I’m fortunate, my brother and nephew are both Ford techs.

So I discovered a popping noise when turning yesterday. Heart sunk thinking of having to rebuild the front end of the truck. Googled it to see and your video was the first to pop up. Just saved me a trip to the shop. Kids had flipped the hubs into locked.

Had same problem... just went out and checked.. both hubs were locked in from the trans shop when i picked it up...

So I just watched this and fixed my issue with same thing in a 2017 F250. The right hub was in the locked position, but the left was in auto. I've had this truck for 3 months and thought something is wrong. So I turned the right hub to auto and, boom, no more knocking. So was I technically in 3 wheel drive the whole time?

I had a sound coming from a wheel. I had some rims and a lift installed on my truck. The noise was a clicking sound and it would go to sound like a metal rubbing the faster the truck went. I ended up putting new u joints on the 4x4 bcus they were shot and it continued. Then brakes then rotors. Even calipers. The sound continued nothing changed... I took it to another shop and they found that the lugs that we’re installed from a rims dealer put some that were too short and we’re bottoming out on the studs before seating the rim.. the rims were loose and it was causing the constant clicking and rubbing.

My Ford auto locking hubs were not unlocking in the auto setting. After taking them apart, there are plastic tabs with a molded lip at the end. I found that they were the cause of the problem. The plastic would get brittle and one or two broke, causing it to stay locked. I have also seen people put too much grease in the hubs, which can cause malfunctions.

Having the same issue.. I changed shocks and sway bar end links and sway bar bushings. I watched your video and am interested. I'm not real sure what your resolution was. Can ya help a brother out? Great video.
