Well here's something you certainly don't see every day, a 1984 Ford Bronco II and interestingly enough it happens to have a 2.8 Cologne V6 under the hood! So, as the story goes when this truck came to us it refused to start and would not stay started once it would was running. Time to dive under the hood and under this maligned small Ford SUV to see what's what!
Let's all agree on something and it's a basic part of getting any internal combustion engine running, there are 3 things you need. These are Air, Fuel, and Spark if one of those components is missing, you're not going to make fire and without fire you aren't going to make power. With a little diagnosis the issue is tracked down and so begins to the battle to fix it. Unfortunately these Cologne V6s and their German engineers didn't do us many favors with these motors and you'll see Rich really really not enjoying the experience of getting this little truck to fire up again.
At the end of the day, we won, and another odd ball little 80s machine is back on the road. With the reintroduction of the smaller modern Bronco and Bronco Sport by Ford recently, will these little beasts see a growth in popularity? Or will their reputation keep them forever banished from the Cool Kids table? Either way this one is running and on to it's next step!
Lucore Automotive is a small independent American small business located just outside Columbus Ohio. While we are a full service shop that maintains and repairs countless daily drivers we are also well known for our work on classics, race cars, and collector cars.

My dad had one… exact same year model. Hired a shade tree mechanic to help fix a firing problem and after a week of throwing crazy amount of parts and money at it they finally fixed it with a new cap … the first one they bought was bad from the factory! My dad was pissed. I was only 8 at the time but I do remember the amount of cussing and throwing tools! 😂

That was a part of working on these and many old monsters, no diagnostic information so many guesses and throwing of tools :) Hate to say it though but the "bad new part" thing is still VERY much an issue!

I just bought a 1985 super solid Eddie Bauer 4x4, manual trans Bronco 2 a couple weeks ago. Love it! Had to set the choke, they had it fully open and the idle set way up to try and keep it running when it was cold and it idled at 2000 rpm when it warmed up. Choke set, warm idle dropped to about 800 rpm, and it runs like a champ. Have the rear brakes torn apart to replace bad parking brake cables and found leaky wheel cylinders so new shoes, drums and wheel cylinders are going in. Previous owner put new calipers, rotors pads and brake lines on the front. The B2 was repainted in the original emerald green with tan lower trim 4 years ago and looks good. My 19 F150 may never get driven again!

Howdy Gordy! any tips on setting the choke? im in your same boat just bought a 85' Eddie Bauer manual trans. I think the idle is set too low right now. once it warms up it won't idle but runs good in gear.

That shiny Edelbrock air cleaner probably adds five HP by itself. Add a couple of stickers in the back window and you're well on your way to 200 HP! A shiny skull shift knob will also increase HP in the Bronco II. And don't worry, you're always entertaining whether you mean to or not.

Do Carb'd motors even run anymore without a chrome air cleaner lid? Wasn't that a mandated changed in the 90s? ;) It WOULD be kind of fun and interesting to build something powerful out of one of these things ... if only it weren't for that whole ending up on it's roof thing. As much of a pain in the butt as it is to replace it, when mine goes ( 154k miles currently ) I'll have to drop the tank & find a rollover gasket that doesn't come with a aftermarket pump for my old truck. What fun, what joy that will be. Until part 2.

Lol point very well taken! Just cause we are building one doesn't necessarily mean we 100% love it. We are doing it this way because it "makes sense" not because we really really want to. It WILL be cool and unique though... God we hope so at least!
@jasonwood7340
@jasonwood7340 2 года назад
@@LucoreAuto I'm in the process of reassembling my 2.8. It had a bent push rod (probably due to a stuck lifter) and decided to disassemble and reseal since it leaks from... everywhere. I had thought about putting a cam in it and a couple other upgrades (like DuraSpark) but... I think I'll go with cheap parts and save the $$$ for a different engine swap, will probably be cheaper. I enjoyed the couple of videos of yours I watched, keep it up :)
@zetamale7952
@zetamale7952 Год назад
Those 2.8 & 2.9 engines are gutless but they don't quit running. My 89 sat for 3 years. Put a battery in it. Started right up. It sits in the pole barn slowly being worked on to replace my 2014 escape. The escapes have bad transmissions right off the showroom floor. Engines are powerful but not the best. I won't own another ford newer than a 1995. They don't make good vehicles any more. I'm a life long ford guy.

The heads are cracked. Why do I say that? Back in the 90's when I had a automotive machine shop EVERY set that came in was. Usually around the valve springs letting water get in the oil. Not all of them leaked but they all seemed to be cracked. There was such a demand for them that a stock replacement aftermarket head was made.

Those Bronco 2"s had a tendency for rollovers, if you had to jerk the wheel to avoid sudden accidents, and then over compensate on steering going back.
@LucoreAuto
@LucoreAuto 2 года назад
Indeed, one of their more popular party tricks. They laid the growth of the small SUV / crossover world we live in now though so... maybe they had some measure of success? Despite the, you know, horrible driving characteristics
@TheCoreyd1086
@TheCoreyd1086 2 года назад
Absolutely. 1984 the Ford Bronco II was considered the 5th worst car ever made. The suspension was off so yes even the slightest turn could cause you to roll over. Many people were injured or killed. Ford tried to blame aggressive drivers but ended up paying out over 2.5 million to settle lawsuits
@carlomagnotm
@carlomagnotm Год назад
@@TheCoreyd1086 there was also a ford blame on Firestone tires they also used to put in their cars, the delayering rubber factor wasnt a thing back then were many ppl used to fill their tires with amonia based sealant as well, that leaded to many possible reasons of the roll overs also with the explorer model besides the complete stabilization bars in both ends ,maybe the TTB front suspension wasnt the best idea for this B2 model but its a lovely car under 70kph
