Ford Ecosport an overlooked gem | full review 2019 

My Mum has had this car for 3 years now, same colour, wheels, spec, transmission and engine and she absolutely loves it. She said that she will have this car ‘til the day she dies. At first I was like “ok, bit dramatic Mum” lol, but after my car broke down and she lent me hers to use for a month I totally get it. On paper this car sounds stupid, but when living with it it makes total sense. What it is essentially is a Ford Fiesta estate on stilts. Plus the boot thing is nonsense, my mother lives in a terrace street with parallel parking and has never had and issues, the boot door has a resting mid-point where you can open the boot partially and still get your body between the gap. Also I’d admit, it still looks good, it’s been years now and it dosent look cheap or nasty, it’s also never let her down reliability-wise and although not the most fuel efficient car in the market it’s good for the journeys she makes. I noticed when I borrowed it that it was fine around town, but take it on the motorway it will use more fuel than you’d expect it to. Ultimately I would recommend this car, and would definitely buy one myself if I were looking for a car in this class.

Idk why people hate on this car so much im 15 and turning 16 in april and I need a car to learn how to drive, the ecosport seems like a great cute reliable car for a first time/ beginner driver

Ive seen a lot of reviews on this vehicle and I must say yours is the most honest and the only one that mentions that there is storage space under the boot floor, & simultaneously you addressed the" eco" "echo" problem quite well. Taste and preference is a matter of opinion, even a flying carpet that uses zero fuel and has zero emmisions, that can carry the whole family will have its critics. You're probably correct in that it's targeted toward the younger, maybe female crowd... I'm a woman in my 20's and I've been fangirling over this car since it hit the market. First time I saw one I sat and stared a bit. I currently have a Fiesta and would like to get an EcoSport when my Fiesta's transmission blows, unless another tiny SUV hits the market by then. I want the functionality of an SUV as a small-family, multipurpose vehicle, while keeping it petite since I'm petite. Big SUVs are too intimidating to me. My Fiesta is narrow and easy to park but I wish I was higher up.

i recently bought this car and i must say its perfect for me i love it , i live in the country side and ive had no issues with it. The only thing i would improve is the engine size but apart from that. it looks good it drives good

I'm in America and I just traded a 2019 Ford Fiesta in for a Ford EcoSport S model. I've driven the EcoSport SE model and found it quite nice, comfortable and easy on the pocket. But, you made some great points that I wish I had been able to bare in mind. Overall though, I'm sure it will be a great vehicle for my needs here in America. Thanks for your video.

Been driving the Ecosport Trend Ultimate now for about 2 1/2 years. Still love the car. Does best on long distance, when driving around 100 km. per hour in 6th gear. Getting about 16 km. per liter then. In the city about 8 km. per liter. We drive it as a pleasure car (2 persons) and are very pleased. The big door at the back is no problem for us, don't know why people keep complaining about it, but OK, taste is not something one can discuss. We had a great deal on this (then) new car in 2019 and hope to drive a couple of hears more.

I have 191 ecosport 1.5 diesel, absolute brilliant car lovely quality nice styling,easy to park, the only caveat is the boot but it's fine after a week of getting used to it. Would definitely recommend

Ford must be delighted to hear that their EcoSport has equivalent quality to a Dacia Duster at less than half the price. But a great review, Bob, and I love the laidback style.

I've had this car since 2019, and I love it. Wouldn't change it and won't be getting rid of it. Loads of space, comfortable and great value for money.

Bob fairy honest comments. I own one and really like it, does what I need it to do - can drive it over flooded, pot hole country roads with ease. The boot is flat so no bump or well to have to lift things over. Managed to get elderly relatives in AND out without a problem also get 3 over six foot tall passengers in. Sorry not able to do that in a Puma!

I just got a 2020 ecosport in Ohio and I absolutely love it. Such a good price for all of that plus 4wd and a sunroof. I got the 2 liter engine tho

I'm looking to get one of these ST Line ones myself. I'm in my 50s with an elderly mum so the height will be handy. The only thing I worry about a tad is I have a 32 mile each way commute along motorways. I am hoping I will be happy with it. I am going for the automatic as well. I had a Nissan Cube some years back with the fridge style boot door and I liked it. You could sit on the back easily and load dogs in and out much better too. Those bleating about it need to remember it has 5 doors so you can always sling your shopping in the back seat if needs be if you get caught out, but I never did with the Cube. Cheers for the review. I think I'll like it. I have a Peugeot 1007 right now and WILL miss my electric doors, though 😲

I have a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. I'm not sure they sell that model in Ireland, bob. It's the sister car to the kia Optima you reviewed a while back. I'm looking forward to the new Ford Bronco next year!

Currently on my 2nd Hyundai i40, for my next car I would get either another i40 as I am just so extremely happy with these cars, or a Volkswagen Passat or a Volkswagen Arteon

I agree haven driven the ford and the seat, the seat wins hands down for me, far more economical and better equipment. And an enjoyable drive.

Hey Bob, just saw and enjoyed your review of the EcoSport. To answer your question about whether I plan to buy an electric car. Answer: NO. Not that I would not like to, but mainly they are just too expensive right now (at least here in the US where I am), charging them is problematic, i.e. you need a charging or filling station that supports electric vehicles, and lastly there is no government incentive , i.e. tax break, to consumers to purchase an electric vehicle. Auto makers get incentives and tax breaks as part of their commitment to creating more fuel efficient vehicles but the consumer is still left paying for it. However, I just purchased a 2019 EcoSport and I just love it. I did not find some of the issues that some reviews said about it, for example, hampered visibility in the driver seat because of the A-Columns. I have absolutely no issue with seeing things in the EcoSport. The only thing, so far, I wish was different is the rear cargo door. As you mention, it opens from the side, and aside from water getting in if it's raining, if you don't have sufficient clearance behind you, access could be an difficult if you can reposition the vehicle. In any case, enjoyed your video.

Good informative review, thanks. I drive a FF 1.6, about 8yrs old. Would like to buy a car (compact suv ?!) for a bit more height in front & back, plus a bit more ooomph, if that isn’t a contradiction. Probably the height is important - the ease of getting in and out plus the better lines of sight. //. Elec car : Not in next 2yrs. Would like to but currently live in a 3rd floor flat so charging at home would be impractical. And the cheaper ones don’t seem to have th3 range (yet).

When it’s cold and rainy.....that will be everyday then in Ireland! Lol

Would rather go for a Suzuki Vitara any day of the week, same price will get you a well specced SZT, the 1.0 boosterjet engine is not compromised in any way whatsoever, even on motorways.

Bob, if you get a chance to reply. My parents are elderly & have a Dacia sandero stepway. They are looking for a small car with high seats for easy entry/exit. Also auto gearbox. They couldn't care less about performance/ fuel economy etc. Just want a decent reliable car. Do you think the eco sport would fit the bill?

NO#BOBFLAVIN Great review 👍 Currently drive a lovely 4 yr old A6 Avant 3.0d. Next car may be a Corolla tourer 2.0 hybrid OR I really like the Suzuki Vitara 1.4. Economy and good dealer support essential. Audi dealers are not great though I love the car I need to downsize next time.

I've got a 2018 Titanium but the only fault is the reverse parking audible doesn't function.

I was surprised by this car I was on a slip road onto the southbound m1 in a 1.4 astra I gave it the beans and he overt took me effortlessly

It is not in the same range Sir. The Duster can tow a decent sized sports caravan I'm doubtful this could tow anyway near the Duster.

Buying a new car in 2 years YES Electric 50/50 I don't think EV is quite there yet for my driving requirements but 24 months is a long way away with the speed things are going so I will hold off the final decision till closer to that time 2021 Brand wise I think Audi is the direction that I will continue in but if financial position changes I'd love to go Porsche but that kind of dictates the EV/ICE decision... I am in the EV camp at the moment as 5 years down the line depreciation on ICE is/maybe just too hard to justify and by then EV should be a more rounded and realistic alternative to ICE. At present, the E-Tron is a nose in front but that may be down to bloody electric torque! #BOBFLAVIN

Nice car but a worry about the longevity of Ecoboost engines with their wet timing belts, which are arguably supposed to last 10 years and cost a fortune to replace.

Why does no one lift the back seats and show that the boot has a perfectly flat boot space all the way to the front seats, I know because I drive a Ecosport St line.

I bought a 2018 ECOSPORT 2.0 automatic a few months ago it was used with only a little over 18,000 miles it’s 4 years old as I’m writing this in 2022. It’s 4 wheel drive an for an SE it’s nicely equipped. So far I really like it, I like the way the hatch opens, as for having a hard time opening it if a car is to close to your back end the same can be said for a regular hatch. I don’t know why Ford couldn’t put the Turbo charged 2.0 in it, but 2.0 engine I have is good enough for me as I’ve drove it on an interstate with a 70 mph speed limit an it had no problem keeping up with Traffic. Can’t wait to drive it in the snow this winter to see how it does. Another thing FORD should have put on it was a little more aggressive tires on it as it’s 4 wheel drive as the tires they put on it suck. All in all a nice looking car that handles well an is comfortable to ride in.

I had an Octavia estate as my company car and did 80k+ miles and it never missed a beat.Got a 1.6Tdi Karoq to replace it in SE L trim and added lots of options.Gearing is too high,they put 0-20W oil in it until the first service when they swop it for 5-30W and it has the horrible adblue.Emissions and the VW Group aren't getting on at all,it would appear.Apple CarPlay doesn't play at all if it's not in the mood.The car has an intermediate fault which feels like fuel starvation.I want my Octavia back.Do me a favour,Bob,drive one and post your video and comments.Potentially a great car but poor execution imho.Electric cars are too expensive and hybrids are smoke and mirrors.

I drive and own an early 2012 Toyota Auris 1.33, now called corolla hatchback, LPG converted by the local Toyota Hellas. No issues and actually a little better performance on LPG. I would like to drive a more engaging to drive car, I dont know, maybe a Focus or 308, but lower spec petrol engine, just like my current one. Definetely NOT an ecosprort or 2008!!!

You say that you would consider this car Bob, I am struggling to see why from what you have said. It doesn't handle too well, the 1.0 ecoboost engine is underpowered and thirsty in this application, the boot door pours rainwater into the boot, the infotainment messages are intrusive and its too expensive. Apart from the subjective views on its looks, was there anything that puts it close or let alone above the competition?

Currently driving F150, V8 and get around 12l/100 in town. 7L sounds terrible for such a small car. An electric will be 5-10 years in my future. Canada is way to big, to cold and to many mountains for electric to be a main family vehicle in my opinion.

It's the tiny wheels and the tall profile. It looks like one of those toys that opens up and has lots of little cars in it along with just coming off as the young mums family car.

I’m trading in my 21 plate Puma ST yes a full ST for a 22 plate Echosport st-line 140bhp Why you ask! Are you mad! Puma st is fast but that’s it nothing much else to like , the paint is coming off the led dash works when it wants and fog lights stop working the car is cheaply built poor quality speed isn’t everything. I like the look of the Echosport and the higher seating position and the comfort I’m 52 now & brought the ST in a mid life crisis so it’s time to slow down safe money & not look a plonka getting out of bucket race seats

I understand why you need a side open door if you have a spare wheel on it but on a normal car it’s mad. So many times you are going to be trapped in carpark without being able to open the door without moving the car. Doh!

I've got the 2015 model , 4 cylinder , auto and i fuck with the best of drivers because it easily get up to speed. Ive had it up to 155 kmh and it was still handling the road .

Had the engine in a Focus hire car, and dear god it was desperate. Had to plan any overtakes at least 6 days in advance. And that was on the motorway. #BOBFLAVIN No.

That fuel economy sucks. I'm driving a 2007 1.2 Chevrolet aveo saloon and that gets an average of 6.5 Litres per 100km and I do a lot of motorway driving

Good looking underrated small SUV. Feels more expensive than it is. I own one and have experience of more expensive cars and it's well worth the money.

Sorry Bob, but I hate these with a vengeance. A relative as a 191 and it's absolute crap. Dead slow, no room, and looks like it was cut short. Besides, any Ford I've ever known as given a lot of trouble.

I don't know, this is a cheap car like Opel Agila, not really pretty (even with two-tone roof), awkward shaped, high center of gravity... just meh... In Europe it's overlooked since we have a lot of cars to choose from, but in USA it's funny how they try to push it to unknowing customers, especially with that EcoSport name. Actually, it reminds me of those awkward narrow cars they sell in India!
