I have a 98 Explorer and I just changed the fuel pump. I borrowed an extra car jack to put under the tank towards the middle. It’s fairly easy to take out. There are four 13mm bolts to take the metal shield off. There are two 18mm bolts to take the gas tank off. Once all bolts are off you can lower the gas tank slowly. I lowered it just enough to gain access to the top. I also removed the rear driver side tire which made things 100x easier. Important to note I put a piece of 2x6 on the jack under the tank for balanced support. After changing my fuel pump I still couldn’t get the car to turn over. I changed the battery, oil/filter, air filter, fuel pump, spark plugs, spark plug cables and ignition coils. The only thing left is the crank shaft sensor.
@@Sunsetschano I changed the fuel filter last and still no fuel pressure coming to the front. Next I’m going to check the sensor you mentioned. I lowered the tank again and had someone prime the truck and I don’t hear the pump starting in the tank. I wonder if this piece cheap of crap aftermarket pump is defective. I wanted to check power on the fuel pump connector to see maybe if there’s an electrical issue?
@@Sunsetschano I checked the fuse with a fuse tester and it lights up. I tested the relay that passed. To be safe I replaced both. The weird thing is I’ve heard the new fuel pump prime, while listening close to the gas tank. Now I don’t hear anything. After I double check power going to the fuel pump connector I’ll update. Thanks.
@@Sunsetschano since I purchased the new fuel pump last month I got it replaced with the warranty. This time after removing the gas tank for the 2nd time, I washed the gas tank and removed all rust particles from inside. I let the gas tank air dry, installed the new fuel pump and EVAP sensor. Currently raining in NYC so I have to wait for the weather to clear up.
I'm having a similar problem mine is even the same color as your lol. I have a question, when you start your vehicle what is the noise it made? Mine has been starting may start good everytime for days then one day won't start at all for up to days of trying! When it does this it makes a whining noise no clicking. I had just replaced the starter and it worked good for awhile an now it's doing it again. This vehicle is extremely frustrating. But when things are in working order its a beast. They have made almost all of the parts extremely hard to get to. The starter for instance is in the middle at the very bottom to replace this you have to remove driver's side tire an squeeze through a small opening to replace. If its your fly wheel which most people have told me it could be for a temporary fix most vehicles you can move the flywheel by hand, well not this vehicle! Someone told me I could put my hand on one side of the belt and other hand on the other side and give it a good tug that that should be successful. Well I tried that bitch won't budge. You have contort hands leaving you little an i mean little room to get a decent grip. Then I'm told to fix the flywheel the engine has to pulled out! Like what the fuck!? I've been doing a lot of researching and trouble shooting the problems myself cause I tell ya this vehicle is some weird! I was downtown in a parking lot with my son and i was teaching him how to drive. He got confused on the gears and the vehicle just stalled right there. Try to go start it back up and you can't move the gear shift to put it in drive. We had to go a mile down the road in the middle of January at 5 below 0 weather not properly dressed to get wifi service cause i for got my phone at home and all he had was a tablet. Spent like 2hrs researching for it till i think i have found a solution. Under the steering column there is a small sort of pear shaped door that has an arrow on it. Weird right!? So anyways if you don't have a flat head screw driver your basically fucked but if you have one stick it in the slot unlock it its been so long but i once its opened you push something to the side! IT'S A STUPID SAFETY FEATURE AMONG MANY THAT WILL COST AT LEAST A 100 BUCKS IN A TOW IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON! HERE'S ANOTHER ONE! IF YOU HAPPEN TO HIT A POT HOLE REALLY HARD OR GET THIS IF YOUR BUMPER GETS HIT BY A DAMN SHOPPING CART THE VEHICLE MAY TELL ITSELF THAT UH OH ACCIDENT AND CUT THE FUEL OF SO THAT THE DAMN THING WON'T START. AND TO FIX THIS THERE IS A BUTTON ON THE PASSENGER SIDE UP UNDER THE DASH NEAREST TO THE DOOR ON THIS MODEL TO TURN IT BACK ON. AND ONCE AGAIN THIS WOULD COST YOU MORE MONEY IN NOT JUST A TOW BUT LEAVE YOU STRANDED YET AGAIN IN SOME OF THE WORST POSSIBLE MOMENTS. I KNOW THAT THESE ARE SMART FEATURES CAUSE WITH THE STEERING COLUMN IF A CHILD WAS WIGGLING THE GEAR SHIFT TO MAKE IT MOVE IT LOCKS IT DOWN SO YOU CAN'T SAME WITH THE FUEL BUT MY GOD IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR LOOKING FOR YOU WOUDN'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO FIND THE ISSUE IN THE MANUAL! THINGS LIKE THIS NEED TO IN LARGE PRINT TO GET SOMEONES ATTENTION. i FEEL LIKE FORD SHOULD REIMBURSE. i HONESTLY DON'T MAKE A WHOLE LOT OF MONEY AND HAVE 3 KIDS TO SUPPORT SO WHEN SOMETHING GOES ON THIS VEHICLE IT SITS TILL I CAN GATHER THE MONEY TO FIX. CAUSE EVERY TIME IT'S A TYPICAL PART BUT EVERY ONE OF THOSE TYPICAL PARTS ARE EXTREMELY HARD TO GET TO YOU'VE GOT TO TAKE OUT OR OFF LARGE PARTS TO ACCESS THE TYPICAL PARTS MAKING IT SO YOU CAN'T DIY YOUR OWN FIXES! TAX TIME I PUT 2,000 IN IT TO GET IT UP AND RUNNING AFTER A 1.5 YR OF JUST BEING LAWN DECO. RUST ON THIS VEHICLE IS SEVERE ONLY INSIDE THE BACK DOORS WHERE THE RUNNING BOARDS ARE AND UP ALONG THE WHEEL WELL NOT A SPEC ON THE OUTSIDE, THIS MAKES IT EXTREMELY DANGEROUS FOR CHILDREN TO SLIDE IN AN OUT OF THE VEHICLE. I CAN'T EVEN TELL YOU HOW MANY TIMES I'VE SCRATCH MY SHINS ON IT UNLOADING MY THEN BABY OUT OF THE CAR SEAT. AN THE REASON I HAD TO DIP SO MUCH MONEY FIXING THAT RUST IS BECAUSE OF THE FAULTY RUBBER SEAL THEY PUT IN. IT EVEN FALLS SOMETIMES FROM THE TOP OF THE WINDOW HANGING IN FRONT OF MY CHILDS FACE! CAUSE OF THE FAULTY SEAL WHEN YOU ARE DRIVING IN THE RAIN OR SNOW IT SHOOTS OF THE FRONT TIRE AN GETS UNDERNEATH THE DOORS MAKING IT'S WAY TO SIT IN THE PLASTIC CAVITY, ON MY 03 MODEL I'VE GOT A GRAY PLASTIC TRIM. I'VE JUST ALSO RECENTLY NOTICED WATER STAIN ON THE MATERIAL OF MY CEILING. JUST SITTING WATER STILL IS GETTING INSIDE. IT'S SO UNFAIR TO BE TREATED THIS UNFAIRLY ON A VEHICLE I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ONE FACTORY RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE I HAD BEFORE WAS AN ESCAPE WHICH I LOVED AND THEY WOULDN'T STOP SENDING ME RECALL NOTICES AND EVERYTIME IT WAS A DIFFERENT RECALL PART NOTICE. i CAN'T JUST GO BUY ANOTHER VEHICLE I DID HOWEVER ROLLED THE DICE A TAX TIME TO PUT MONEY INTO FIXING IT CAUSE IT ONLY HAS 115,000 ON IT AND LOOKS NEW INSIDE AND OUT WELL THAT IS UNTIL YOU OPEN THE BACK DOORS. BUT NOW THAT I'M ALREADY HAVING TROUBLE ONCE AGAIN IT'S GOT ME WISHING I SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT SOMETHING ELSE! FORD REALLY FUCKED LOTS OF FAMILIES WITH THIS PARTICULAR MODEL. IT'S A DAMN MONEY PIT FOR SURE AND A HUGE PART OF MY STRESS AN ANXIETY WONDERING WHEN WHERE I'LL BE STRANDED WITH MY CHILDREN NEXT TIME! SORRY FOR RANTING BUT I'M SURE SOME OF YOU HAVE HAD SIMILAR ISSUES. AND IN FACT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW MANY HAVE AND IF THEY ARE SIMILAR CAUSE THEN MAYBE FORD WILL HAVE TO COUGH UP FACTORY RECALLS ! I GOT SO FAR OF THE SUBJECT THAT IN CASE YOU'VE FORGOTTEN MY QUESTION I WANTED TO KNOW WHAT THE WHINING SOUND IS WHEN I START MY VEHICLE. IT DOESN'T CLICK JUST WHINES. BATTERY HAS FUNCTION EVERYTHING TURNS ON. THE CHECK GAGE LIGHT IS ON AS WELL AS THE BATTERY LIGHT. AN STARTER WAS JUST RECENTLY REPLACED ANY ADVISE ANYONE HAS WILL BE SO APPRECIATED. I'M ACTUALLY GONNA MAKE A SHORT VIDEO AND UPLOAD TO MY CHANNEL TOMORROW. SO YOU CAN HEAR AN SEE. THANKS A MILLION!!
Mine did not make a wining noise.. it would turn over, but not start. I know it is difficult.. They try to bankrupt us with these car issues. Is there a belt slipping or something? That might make a wining noise?? Maybe try to get someone to help you turn the key, while you watch with the hood open to see what is going on, and find out where the whining noise is coming from??
I'm having the same problems and more almost fixed every damn thing on it, need help.. can it be fixed or not?? Hate to sell it if it's just something simple..
Girl you rock I am a single mom if 4 kids with the same exact hunk junk I loved it at first but yea ...thank you I recently replaced alternator and battery and belt after a crazy ex ripping it all out. So long story short I got brand new battery first, it started right up. Then got a used alternator and belt that I know was on a running explorer at a junk yard/of a friends and but after a person put it in my explorer now it has power won't crank over start make any start R all. HE DID HOWEVER LEAVE THE BATTERY HOOKED UP WHILE PUTTING THE ALTERNATOR ON... So hopeful maybe you got some magic ✨ for me I am going to try your tips tomorrow first thing in the morning 🌅. Thank You for your time spreading the truth and info needed to help so many BLESS YOU ALL🙏
I have an 02 Ranger w/3.0 V6. with the same intermittent start problem. You did not give a year or engine model of your car. It would help. Also what pump brand did you install? Ford Motorcraft?
I was watching this video and you changed everything I've done to mine in that EXACT order for the last 2 years and I've changed more.... Mine cranks but no starts when it wants.. I just got my fuel pump earlier.. if it solves I wish ida saw this video a year and a half ago... I was thinking ground/elec issue or fuel.. for tried fixing mine twice doing what they did to yours 😢😅 I've tried everything I hope this works
I'm 64, female. My son n myself put a new one in the 94 Ford Explorer alt. just jack it up remover the battery cables and empty the gas out. then remove the tank unplug the pump tada its out!
Have a 2005 Mercury mountaineer and ever problem you stated we have changed all the same parts plus more so we were thinking the fuel pump thanks if it works will update so it might help someone else.
From what I've heard in the explorers, the older models, not sure about the new models, one can access the fuel tank from above via making access panel under seat behind drivers side if one isn't present already. Sure would beat having to drop the tank. Tricky thing is, how to safely make that panel without sparking a fire.
Maybe, if you want to cut a hole in the floor, though a steel plate.. I though about this option... but it was not clear where the best place is to cut the hole,.. and if you cut a little too deep, you are cutting into fuel lines, and the gas tank.. with a grinder that is throwing sparks EVERYWHERE! Fortunately I know of a great mechanic that did it cheaply.. Also I wasn't sure, that the fuel pump was the problem, until it quite completely.. at that point, I already had it at the mechanics.. There are videos of others cutting this hole, to change the fuel pump.. I would consider this option.. if circumstance had been different for me.. Thanks again for the great comments!!
Yes but, I tell you everything I did to diagnose the issue.. then I told you what the solution was.. The expensive part, is knowing what the issue is based on the symptoms.. The fuel pump is very expensive to replace.. and if that is not the issue... then it is a huge waste of money to replace it, and you will still need to fix another problem.. This was an issue that even the 'experts' at the FORD dealership failed to diagnose properly, over and over again!!.. if I just told you to replace the fuel pump, without explaining how to diagnose the issue.. then how would you know if you had the same problem??? There are literally hundreds of different problems an automobile can have, and you can spend a fortunes shotgunning the issues, if you don't diagnose the problem first.. even with this non-start issue of the Ford Explorer, you could have other causes... for instance, the cam shaft position sensor could be bad, or the crank shaft position sensor, or the ignition coil system, or a clog in the fuel injectors, or a problems with a vehicle computer, the fuel pump controller (on some models not on others) etc, etc. and if you don't trouble shoot the problems, it will cost a fortune to blindly replace all of these possible things,, and then possibly never even fix the problem... I made several other videos on this Ford Explorer problem, trouble shooting these other issues too, to narrow down the possibilities... to help solve this really difficult issue.. I hope these videos help people trying to fix this problem.. Thanks for the great comments...
I HAVE AN ‘04 FORD EXPLORER. I’VE HAD THE FUEL PUMP REPLACED TWICE NOW. A NEW FUEL LINE AND PCV VALVE. BUT NOW SHE WON’T EVEN START? ALSO WILL SLOW DOWN ON ITS OWN, EVEN WITH FOOT ON ACCELERATOR ANY IDEAS???
i hope the ford dealer reimbursed you for all their wasted efforts and unnecessary parts replacement. you paid them to resolve the issue and they failed miserably. you might think that testing the fuel pump would have been among their first test priority; instead they completely ignored this component. I am surprised that their "state of art" diagnostic tools did not flag the pump as faulty. Glad you have now solved the problem.
No they did not... That is why I mentioned it! They charged me over $500 and did nothing to fix the problem.. They even played some silly games with me, as if that wasn't enough.. I (mistakenly) though that this Explorer had a fuel pump driver in a separate location, what I could try replacing.. It turns out that this years model did not.. yes the head of the mechanics, either did not know this important piece of information... or lead me on, while he was supposedly searching for this part for me.. meanwhile make different 'deals' with me along the way... If he ever did figure it this out, he did not have the courtesy to share this information with me. They did call me up some time later, to offer to buy the vehicle from me cheap!.. So that they could resell it to some one else!!! I will NEVER do business with them again!!! Thanks again for the great comments!!!
@@jaynesnetwork thanks for your reply. You should pursue them for the 500 usd they charged you. They obviously scam their customers and will continue to do so until someboby holds them to account. Good luck to you
My buddy at work, his father is a lawyer,.... and he told me that you cannot sue them.. they make you sign a waiver before they work on things.. and that they never actually have to do anything.. and can still basically charge you!!??.. It doesn't seem right.. but it seems to be the way things really are??... My personal observations are,.. that the courts work on the 'Golden Rule'.. He who has the gold makes the rules.. Basically they only protect BIG MONEY.. because our court systems is completely corrupt.. and that He who every bribes the judges the most wins! That is why more expensive lawyer tend to win... They give the judges bigger kick-backs and bribes... from Your payment to the lawyers... and since the money goes through the lawyers, directly to the judges.. they cannot get caught!!... and that is why the courts only represent the rich, and terrorize the rest of us.. Sorry, just my tainted observations, based on years of observing how this corrupt system really works.. Most people never see the truth.. because they are conditioned by the media to dismiss reality.. and believe with starry eyes... in the fairy tails they are told by the powers-that-be. I am more jaded.. I guess I should have taken the blue pill instead!! bottom line.. BUYER BE WARE!! Thanks again for the kind words!!
well he said he tested the fuel pressure and it was normal, i think he might have not hooked the tool up right , or it was faulty. i would have made sure by hooking a long clear hose and small clamp up to the pressure regulator part that goes into the rail into a clear container and cranked the engine once to see . a lot of wasted time trouble shooting, that's why i learned at a early age from my dad how to trouble shoot my own vehicles. because this what happens you get " FLEECED " by so called technicians..
@@lionelhowell4972 The fuel pressure was fine, when it was not acting up.. It would only act up a couple of hours a month.. and it was undriveable during this time, so almost impossible to get into the dealers while acting up.. There was no fuel pressure when it was acting up.. I could push the fuel relief valve to see this.. but there could have been several different issues to cause this.. only when the fuel pump finally quit working all together.. was it possible to determine the problem easily! Yes I try to fix it myself if possible.. that is the only sure way to avoid being fleeced! Thank for the great comments!!
Omg man my dad going through with the same problems with his 2004 ford explorer .. we started with a new battery then we changed the starter, now my brother changed the ignition switch and nothing we cant get it to run .....ita crazy cuz we live in Manassas Virginia like 20 mins from Fairfax
My issue was the fuel pump! I took mine to Hillbrook Automotive in Annandale VA.. He is this old Korean guy... who charges very little money, and always fixes the problem!.. Best mechanic ever!! Best of luck with your auto issue!!
Sorry, I only work on my cars.. sounds like an interesting problem.. You must have a newer model.. I don't believe believe I have that type of key fob.. Best of Luck!
So I'm having same problems but I've already changed the fuel pump, fuel filter.. complete tune up, new intake, auto control valve sensor.. new battery, theft light is on.. mine work start.. has a strange beeping noise coming from underneath dash somewhere maybe the radio idk.. pls help??
@@jaynesnetwork I'm currently working on my 1995 ford explorer intermitten crank no start and it often works pretty good until you shut it off. Then i gotta wait an hour before it starts. if im lucky it starts when i have throttle open after 20 mins. It works pretty good once it starts but stinks like fuel. i also had it die at idle a few months ago, it died in reverse last week and today it died while driving 30 mph. Did you get those symptoms too?
2008 Ford Explorer 4.0l Turns but won't start in the morning when it's cold. Fuel pump working fine. I thought it was a dirty fuel filter, but after a changed it it still did the same thing. When vehicle is warm or starts right up. Im getting spark, plugs & wires are also in good condition. Can you please help?? What could it be?
I'm having problems again with mine.. I'm making some new videos.. that I hopefully will be releasing soon! For the last problem I had... The fuel pump working intermittently... until it died completely.. then I had to have it towed to someone who could fix it! How many miles are on the vehicle??
@@jaynesnetwork I am having this same issue in the cold with my 2018 Ford Explorer, and Ford has not been able to determine the issue. They are going to replace the BCM. If that does not solve the issue, they said trade it in. It has less than 20k miles 😤🤬!
Get rid of your mechanic he shafted you, you do not have to lower the engine to drop the fuel tank bunch of freaking crooks...but I'm glad to hear it's fixed 👍
How is that easier?? The fuel pump is inside the gas tank, under the car.. Two brackets must be removed, and the super HEAVY gas tank must be lowered from the vehicle.. then the fuel pump is removed from the top of that tank! Gasoline is extremely flammable, and special precaution must be taken when working with this kind of Hazard! To change the distributor... I just need to remove a couple of bolts! It is right on top of the engine.. very easy to access! Is it 10,000 times easier to change the distributor, than to change the fuel pump!
@@jaynesnetwork The vehicle in your video DOESN'T have a distributor! That's what makes it easier to change the fuel pump. What you referred to as a distributor is called a coil pack and yes, THAT would be much easier to change than the fuel pump in that particular vehicle. Also, thanks for the unneeded explanation of what's involved in changing the fuel pump. Believe me, I already know how it's done.
There is a fuel pump controller for these. It's inside the vehicle below the passenger rear tailight. You have to take the trim panels off to access it but it's there. Also I don't know what the mechanic told you the had to lower the engine to remove the fuel tank. You have to remove the four bolts on the rear of the drives haft that goes into axle. Then you ca. Lower the drives haft to get to one bolt. Trust me on this. The most problem these ford have that I've seen are crappy ground straps and if you don't have a good ground you will be visited with all kinds of electrical nightmares. Our mercury mountaineer did the same thing
It is different in different cars.. I looked for the fuel pump controller.. and I eventually discovered that is was with the gas tank.. on this model.. and not in the back.. as most other are.. I disassembled the whole back looking for it.. before I had the fuel pump changed.. If you have easy access to the fuel pump controller.. that is something worth trying to troubleshoot.. Mine is a 2002 ford explorer.. and it is a little different from the newer ones.. Thanks for the great comments!!
The truck developed a separate issues with the electronic ignition coil pack at one point.. and I had to replace that.. but the intermittent non-start issue was eventually solve by replacing the fuel pump..
Prove without any doubt that a part is bad BEFORE buying any parts. Also, be careful buying new parts that can be bad so you've wasted more money & time. The parts places are in business to make money....not to assume you know what is needed.
I have ford explorer 2004..crank won't start checked everything fuses relays. Fuel is coming spark is good . Battery is good. But the red light for secure alarm is blinking red all the time..on dashboard. And I have a brand new key.
When you turned the key, would it try turning over or just click? I think I'm having this problem as well, however I want to make sure before pulling the trigger.
Same here.. changed everything but the pump and the complete wiring harness so far.. just got fuel pump ordered earlier... Been chasing the problem 2 years.. just cranks and no starts sometimes... Whenever it feels like it.. not a constant issue
I did the fuel pump in my 00 explorer i never had to touch the engine i took out 3 bolts and then lowered the tank on a jack then proceeded to change the fuel pump went back up the same way took like 3 hours in my driveway for about 145 dollars
Having same problem even after replacing fuel pump. Of course hasn't missed a beat after being at the shop for a week. Afraid to drive it home without a definitive solution.
Could be the fuel pump?? That was my issue! Hope that you are able to resolve this issue! I used to leave the vehicle running, and lock the doors, when I had to go places, that I did not want it to stop permanently at!! Pump, gas with the engine running.. etc.. only let it rest at home... where people would not get upset, if it was parted there for extended periods of time... You get the idea.. Thanks for the great comments!!
