Cheers John, used this to get 2 Ford lockers off after the brand new McGard key knackered after the first turn! Only torqued to 65lbft as well, stupid things.

Life saver... worked for me..I used an angle grinder for the two slits, two bangs with the club hammer and the sleeves off.. then a 19mm spline socket.. no damage on my wheels..

This may be hard to do with rims there bolt heads deep inside. Using welder to weld outer collar to bolt head and than hammering socket on it may be even easier process.

I have got them off by jb-welding a nut on the outside. The more buggered the threads in the nut are the better. You want the jb weld to get both into the grooves of the wheelnut, and also into the threads of the add-on nut. When it is dry, use a standard spanner. This can be done anywhere with no power tools. Does not work every time, but often enough that it is definitely a useful trick.

The outer ring doesn't need to be removed, get a small (~1" in a dremmel like tool will do) cutting disc and cut a notch for a punch to sit on, then give it a few taps with the hammer, takes between 5-10 mins a wheel, and works if you don't have a die grinder or thick walled sockets

What type of die grinder bit did you use to cut the hard steel of the ring around the bolt, my so called die grinder bits don't touch it.. but I think they are not designed for hard metal. My Demel stone bits just get hot and fall to pieces..

@alfredomarquez9777

NO! Any welding on the wheel nut will produce enough star currents to pit the bearings, which will fail soon!The best way is to use a close fitting (worn but good quality) 12-point socket (different sized as needed) to get a good grip on the lock nut. McGards are beautifully made, but completely useless and a waste of money.
@doubleboost
@doubleboost 7 лет назад
As long as the earth is on the bolt / nut (mole grips) the bearing will be fine I have removed loads by welding

1, it's not a ford locking wheel nut, it's a mcguard collared security wheel bolt, 2 , the easiest way is to tack weld on a short length off half inch square bar direct onto the bolt, then use a half inch spanner on the bar as you've already thermally broken the threads.

@SeanBZA
@SeanBZA 8 лет назад
Should have put the nut back before gently removing the socket, leaving the owner figuring out how it was done when he comes in to pay the bill with the adaptor. Do like the nasty socket idea, though I generally just grind away a bit of the chrome, if not already gone, and weld on a nut there as a fix. Bonus is the heat releases the thread as well.
@alfredomarquez9777
@alfredomarquez9777 7 лет назад
NO NO NO! ANY welding will damage the bearing! (from stray currents going across the rollers and cups of the bearing, pitting the surface, then it will take days or weeks to destroy the bearing). The BEST way is the one shown on the video!
@melody3741
@melody3741 7 лет назад
Alfredo Márquez the only way that will happen is if you ground it through the bearing. ground it on the brake rotor so it doesnt have to go through the bearing.

This would be more interesting on say, a nice new BMW X5 or a nice Merc where the nut is 2" deep, out of sight and with no room around the ring. How come the Ford owner is allowed to drive with eyesight so bad that he doesn't see the damage on that wheel?

I know its been 2yrs ago but you've took 1000's off ? I doubt that, you can't fit a 24mm over one of these nuts, there isn't enough room between the locking nut & wheel, plus, a 24mm socket is too big. This is a much easier way also, not everybody has a mig welder lying around the back garden or shed... the whole point of the video, fkin 'ell, do the neighbours call you Rampton ???
