How to remove locking wheel nuts when you’ve misplaced the locking nut socket please sit back and enjoy my video feel free to subscribe to my channel Richards home mechanics
Just wanted to say hello and thank you! I was able to get the spinning security cuff and the lug off my truck's wheels. Thank you so much for being thoughtful and for sharing this with others. You are indeed a life saver!
Followed your advice about removing 4 of these spinning security rings... Used a sharpened thin cold chisel so easy to remove all 4 taken off within 10mins. Thank you so much for your help... Many thanks Pat 👍
You're a star! First youtube I came across that mention the shroud. Saved me going to the garage. Only thing to add was to wiggle the socket and get it off the nut as you undo it as one was hard to remove after. Thanks again. Have subscribed.
Thanks Richard, went to garage to get 2 new tyres and guy rung locking nut with air tool. The TOOL. then asked for a m9nkey to take the rest off. Bloody cheek. I cam across your video and hey presto, i got them off plus took all off my pathfinder. Thank for taki g the time to make this available. Topman.
Thanks for the advice. I had to modify the process slightly as in didn't have and suitable sized cold chisels. However I did have a dremel with a cutting disk. I carefully cut across the ring with the dremell/cutter. Be very careful not to touch the alloy wheel. In my case I could easily see the edge of the ring and the start of the wheel. I had position the wheel so this particular stud was at the top. Take your time. I was able to get the ring perhaps 95% cut through. I then prised a screwdriver between the ring and and the centre finally breaking the ring. A bit more prising and the ring comes off. Thanks again for the original idea. Hope this may help
Good video. Great help.Didn’t have a small enough cold chisel, ended up using a small flathead screwdriver attachment to get in between and it pinged all 4 rings off in less than 10 mins. Where there’s a will there’s a way👍
Thanks so much. Used to remove Nissan Qashqai locking wheel nut. Sharpened an old nail punch for the collar. Couldn’t find Irwin in my size, but found another manufacturer. Tightened nuts either side, removed the others. Great video and explanation. Hand tools to the rescue.

Absolute legend!! have a stuck spinning wheel lock nut and puncture and have been panicking trying to figure out how to get it off, can't wait to give this a go, you sir are a life saver!! 👍🏻
@@richardshomemechanics5566 hello mate what is the tool Called , the one that gives you leverage - and what is the socket set called ? - if you live in south London come and il sort u a score lol
Hi Richard at 6:28 of the video I thought you only wanted to talk without showing us anything. Luckily you did then. Btw congrats and thanks for sharing.
Why didn't I watch this video first. Watched others as they came up on Google and none of them show how to remove the ring. Got the socket off luckily. Gonna try this now. Luckily just got a chisel set this morning for another diy job.
Damn tyre place obviously kept/lost my key nut a few months ago. Got a flat tyre at home, went to the boot to get the key and find it missing 😡. Mine has the spinning ring too so this vid is a lifesaver thanks.
I'm gonna try this tomorrow morning, bought myself a nice set of wheels and I couldn't put them on because of this shitty spinning nut. Hope it'll crack it. Thanks a lot mate
Hi Richard, nice to come across your video, I'm from argentina. Just wondering what's the best way to avoid thieves to steal your wheels. I thought these spinning nuts where a good option, but guess not. Any advise. I've got a scion frs, or toyota 86 same thing. take care!
Hi Daaudiome Thank you for watching my video and unfortunately if the thieves want your wheels they are going to take them there’s no sure way to protect them locking wheel nuts do work but can be a pain for the owner when the nut keys been lost 😢 Many thanks Richard
Thanks, i couldn't figure out why the socket I hammered on kept on spinning around! Anyway i couldn't get the ring off so i ended up welding the ring to the locking nut. Still took a long bar on the socket to get it going.
Excellent video, just had a locking key fail on a Ford transit custom whilst trying to change the rear brakes. They are the ones with the ring, knocked it off hammered a 22 mm socket over the stub ....job done! Ended up doing the whole lot and ordered 4 nuts. Incidentally Ford are looking for around £60 for the locking nut socket😳
Brilliant advice Richard as always. I have 4 of these spinning suckers to remove off a bmw mini, because the key broke. I’ve got a set of the damaged bolt extractors that you used. The biggest is 19mm. Could you let me know what size you used after you removed the ring.? Thanks 🙏
michael millington hi there thank you for the lovely comments ...the extractor socket you use needs to be slightly bigger than the nut / bolt you are trying extract don’t forget to turn the socket anti clockwise Because as you turn the socket it will bite into the locking nut /bolt don’t forget before you use the extractor you need to get the spinning ring of !!! Hi rich I am going to give it a go,we bought our daughter a second hand car and the rear wheel bearing is shot so went to remove the wheel But previous owner over tightened it and broke locking wheel nut key let’s see if it works thanks
I've seen a locking nut defeat set that consisted of a set of large long easy outs. In my experience an easy out on a impact will usually eat it's way through the spinning rings.I respect the use of hand tools though.
dunno if anyone gives a shit but if you're stoned like me during the covid times then you can watch all the new movies and series on instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my gf for the last few days :)
Great video Richard m8 I have just got this issue on a 2003 corolla hatch standard oem nuts as far as I know rusty as hell I see some people putting force on the chewed up key with a rachet on the alloy or pressure with a jack would that work how do i know if it's a standard or collar nut thanks mate.. Rick
Hi Nixie just get a old socket that is slightly smaller than the bolt/ nut you want to undo hammer it on then crack it off job should be good to go Thank you for watching my videos Rich
Hi Richard, hope you can help. I have 17mm bolts on my wheels, ive cut the ring off but i canr get the 17mm extractor socket to grip, do i need an 17.5 or 18mm one to do it? Thank you in advance great video!
Hi Sacha Ok you have done the hard part and that is getting the spinning ring off ..what happens when you now try to undo the bolt now is as you turn the breaker bar anti clockwise ( left ) the socket should now start bitting into the nut / bolt because it’s a left hand design as you undo it’s actually bitting more and more into the nut./ bolt that you want to undo .. you want the extractor socket to be not a tight fit so as you undo it can then start working it’s way down the nut / bolt this should be good enough to loosen it .. apart from the tyre shop cranking the bolts up way to tight with the air gun making it difficult to budge .. you must use a good quality bolt grip set as cheap ones just don’t do the job ..I can recommend a set called Irwin bolt grip they came from machine mart and are not that expensive.. these should sort this stubborn bolt / nut they have never let me down hope all goes ok ..last resort is to weld a bolt to the nut/ bolt and then use that bolt to undo the stubborn bolt/ nut but this can damage your alloys wheels hope all goes well Regards Richard
Personally I would buy the Irwin kit as it comes with 5 different bolt grip sockets one socket will fit more than one bolt/nut size ..don’t forget to tap the bolt grip into the bolt/ nut your trying to undo so it can start biting as soon as you start to undo ..
@@richardshomemechanics5566 hey bud I’m from Canada nice to meet you my buddy was doing this yesterday and said it cost him 300 dollars and broken tools
Leave the extension bar in the stuck socket then get a small club hammer and tap the socket on each side of socket at the same time get a friend to pull on the extension bar Keep doing this it will come of what’s happened is the spinning ring has got completely jammed in the socket .. if that fails cut down the side of the socket with a angle grinder ( small one I used a compressed air one and then break the socket down the middle with a cold chisel Regards Richard
Hi Bill Thank you for watching my video I agree that using a drimel tool would do the job but on this particular occasion I haven’t got one as I really have the need for such a small cutting tool so opted for chisel which does do the same job Thanks Richard
Hi Tonycarper What I have done is use 2 pry bars on each side of the nut or bolt if you leaver them at the same time and slowly do it the bolt / nut should start to move it takes patience or a large pair of moul grips and wiggle side to side Thanks Richard
@@mrlister2000 not always true. I was able to get the collar out banging a 12 points socket on it. it took a while as it is really hard to get it off. impact gun speeds up the process, it spins at the beginning but friction and heat will make it weak. not fun though. took me about 3 hours total and a lot of swearing (quebec french religious words) 😂
@@mrlister2000 there was not enough space for a big chisel since the holes are recessed in the wheel. I've tried with a small one but it slips. and i have broken 2 punches on it. and for the time spent I had not choice to do it myself since 3 shops I went too said they will use a torch that will for sure damage the alloy wheels.
@@richardshomemechanics5566 Its the same kids that stole my radio.... ACTUALLY, joking apart, After paying attention to your production I went into my workshop where my Vauxhaul Insignia is waiting to have its wheels removed. I lost the wheel nut security key. After carefully splitting the collar as per your guidance I then proceeded to locate an appropriate socket. You'd think motor engineer of 100 years experience would have a 23mm, bi-hexagonal socket ! It took some finding and after bashing 7 shades of crap out of it to get it chewing into the nut I removed it quite easily. I thought the size might be helpful to your viewers. High 5s.
