Intelligent Speed Sign Recognition, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Blue Cruise in the Ford F-150 Lightning, FSD and Autopilot in the Tesla Cybertruck, GMC Super Cruise in the Silverado EV, the GMC Sierra EV Denali, along with the GMC Hummer EV all are early adoption driver assistance systems at various levels of autonomy. None are truly self-driving. Many are now approaching Level 2 self-driving, but none are Level 3 or higher except in limited areas, or where highways have already been fully mapped. It's buyer beware when spending money on self-driving systems, especially when many are still in beta development.

In my most recent trip across BC in a day (see video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j1SvD2nhSRg.html), I had over two dozen incidents where Ford's Speed Sign Recognition System malfunctioned, sometimes dropping highway speeds from 120 (75mph) to 60 kph (30mph) in seconds, or rocketing up from a set speed of 70kph to 120kmh. Have you experienced your own adaptive cruise control or self-driving challenges? Do you own an EV and experienced sudden braking or acceleration events? Please share your thoughts and comments below!

Ha! Thank you! You are far more accurate - and friendly - than Speed Sign Recognition, it seems :-)

I can tell you, its not in just their EV's. I rented a Ranger a little over a year ago. Tried using the Adaptive cruise control and it was to say the least, worse than if I would have been driving blind and drunk. It would come up on slow moving cars and get right on up to the bumper nearly, slam on the brakes, get back to the proper distance then it would mash the gas, and do the same thing all over. I just about got rear ened multipule times when trying to use it. And Lane Keep Assist was like drving drunk, it was back and forth from one side of the lane to the other. And the one time I had to dodge debris in the road it tried to yank the wheel back and nearly put me in out of control swerve. Had it just let me move over like I was trying to it would have been a simple lane change without a signal. But know it ened up being more like the "moose" test. Then there was the issue with it constantly saying the camera's were blocked. I would check them and nothing blocked.

Thank you for sharing your experience with the Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keep Assist on the Ranger. It's important for viewers to read real-world perspectives and understand the potential drawbacks of these 'features'. Safety should always be the top priority with these technologies, and with adding the extra risk of heavier vehicles like EV trucks, we're just not seeing it. This becomes a serious problem.

I drive a 2023 Ford e-Transit as part of my job. My employer leased this vehicle, and it was delivered in late February of 2023. (Note that this is in the US, if it matters.) First, this EV does not have the speed sign recognition option, although it's described in the owner's manual. So are all of the other options that could have been installed, but weren't. (Someone, please help Ford explore the idea of on-demand, custom publishing. Enter the VIN and get an owner's manual that only mentions the features the vehicle has had installed. Seriously, the manual for this EV is so generic that it includes the maintenance schedule for the ICE equivalent Transit Vans.) I use the Ford Adaptive Cruise Control daily. I set the target speed and it cruises along at that speed, or slower if someone is ahead of me and going slower than I am. Since it isn't reading speed signs, it isn't making speed changes based on them. The biggest issue I've had to date comes from the pre-collision warning system. It activates several times per week, usually when someone well-ahead slows to make a right turn. The system (via radar) thinks they've stopped, and it activates. As a human, I can see that the vehicle is turning, and I can judge their speed and mine, and adjust accordingly, but if adaptive cruise control is active, it can initiate a sudden stop. I hope I dont get rear-ended. Another issue I've experienced is outdated map data, with no clear way to report the mistakes. I allow the vehicle to remind me when I'm entering school zones, but it has a couple of phantam alerts for schools that were torn down years ago. (One of them was torn down a decade ago and rebuilt on another site miles away.) There are missing streets in newer neighborhoods, and incorrect speed limits in places where those were changed. The powertrain, the torque, and the general driveability of this van are awesome, but it has a lot of minor issues that drive me up the wall. I wonder if that is on purpose for some reason?

Sounds like the e-Transit is trying to give you a little unwanted excitement on the road with those phantom alerts and outdated map data. Who needs a GPS when you can rely on the van's unique sense of 'creative' direction? I think Ford needs to give its whole Driver Assistance system a serious amount of TLC, IMHO. EXCELLENT point on the manual! You got a giggle out of me on that one 🙂 Thank you for your deep-dive insights and helping expand the discussion!

I've got a Honda CRV (ICE version) and it too has an adaptive cruise control and the ability to brake to avoid collisions. On more than one occasion it has done the same thing to me - hitting the brakes unnecessarily hard and without regard to the danger of being rear ended. I hate that feature and wish there were a way of disabling it.

@@kirkjohnson6638 It's very interesting to hear that other brands are experiencing the same issue. It's certainly dangerous. Fortunately with the Lightning, there is a setting in the menu to disable it. Not good that Honda doesn't have that. I really appreciate you sharing this. Thank you for joining in the discussion!

I love all the videos that keep me from embracing this EV idea. As there ends up being more cons to owning an EV than pros to owning one.

Keep in mind that this 'feature' exists on most Ford ICE products also and, according to Mr Google, there's a crap-pile of complaints along the same lines. I get your point, but we own two EVs and have saved a bucket of money since we got them, and have had no real problems with the EVs themselves and, if you've watched my other videos, you'll know we live in the middle of nowhere :-). It certainly depends on a person's situation and the application of the vehicle, so absolutely hold off until things make sense for you. Thank you so much for joining in the discussion! Your voice matters.

This should be recalled immediately. If Ford isn't able to fix it currently, the dealership needs to disable the option entirely and then reenable - at no cost to the owner - once the fix is available. If it is an advertised feature, especially one that is on by default, it needs a recall. Lots of people buying new trucks may not be tech savvy enough to navigate the infotainment system to find the option to turn it off themselves, and there's no reason to endanger drivers needlessly with a faulty adaptive cruise system. If Ford waits until this kills someone, the blood is on their hands.

An ota software update could disable it, and a subsequent one can re-enable it. This is a programming issue, not something physically wrong.

You can disable the 'feature' in the Driving Assistance menu, which is what the dealership recommended I do, which is just as insulting - that the 'fix' is to turn it off and forget you have it - after Ford promoted the crap out of it. Nice. Thank you for joining in the discussion. I truly appreciate the feedback!

I share your concern. According to Mr. Google, the bug seems to have been around for a while, and although I mention only a few incidents, in one trip it had over two dozen sign misreads and surged or plummeted in speed regularly. I had no option but to turn the 'feature' off. Thank you for joining in the conversation!

Why does this simply reinforce my 60years of driving and intentionally never owning a Ford vehicle? As they say, a leopard never changes its spots (a Ford is always a Ford).

Maybe Ford should get a clue and not offer any more self driving features. Better yet, maybe the NHTSA should get involved.
