Ford Transit MS-RT - 1000 miles changed my view on vans...I now want one !

Vans are for builder right ? Well that not true anymore. I had to drive up to Edinburgh to film the next Season of Cycle Sunday and collect a couple of rather special bikes. I needed something comfortable for the long journey but big enough to fit 4 bikes, 2 people and lots of filming gear. My friends at Hendy came up with the perfect solution and lent me their brand new Ford Transit MS-RT short wheel base crew cab in bright yellow !
At £60,000 it's a expensive van but during the 1000 miles we did in it I really started to get the whole van thing. Could this be a better option for an active family than an SUV ?

I’ve had 4 vans and I actually think they are more comfortable and vastly more practical than any car especially on a long journey. I’m actually thinking of buying either a Transit MSRT or Transporter Sportline shortly.

Same here. Years ago with having dogs, I had 2 maestro vans, followed by a Renault Trafic minibus, followed by a red PATVAN- an LDV crew bus (yuk) and then an 02 reg Ford Tourneo which I kept for well over a decade. It was a 9 seater which was great as I have 5 kids and there was space for shopping/pushchairs etc. I was able to remove the seats for more space like for putting a couple of motorcycles in. After that Hubster had an 08 extra big and tall transit crew bus that my quad fitted in. I actually missed my vans when I downsized to estate cars instead so my husband now has a Citroën c4 Picasso 7 seater which is like a van in that the seats can all fold flat into the floor. I'm really a MINI driver but I still love vans and would love one as my own 2nd vehicle as once you've had them and are used to the freedom of putting stuff in, you really miss them. I'd definitely recommend that Bumblebee to anyone with kids. MPVs have very little boot space when all 7 seats are in use. No way can you carry a pushchair, but you can put a pram in the back of the transit without folding. I could put my triple buggy in without folding and the family shop. Going to the beach we took so much stuff, we'd load a garden trolley, put it in the boot and drag it down the beach, and here, like Ped has shown, they're great for bikes too.

Probably agree, if you're lucky enough to get a top spec model with all the toys and comforts. I do 45k a year in my LWB Transit Connect and I can't wait to get out of the bloody thing, I even wear ear plugs on some roads. Give me my E90 330i any day, it's like driving a Rolls after being in the van all week.

@@TheDoosh79 my Tourneo was nice but it wasn't the executive spec. We actually blacked out the rear windows and put screens on the back of each seat headrest and I had a DVD player plonked on the middle seat in the front so the passenger could change their film. My kids loved it. Also mine had what I called a 'gazebo' back door, like the one Ped used. The large back door opened up like a hatchback so my kids could sit either on the 'boot lip' or in chairs eating a picnic and out of any unsavoury weather. When the children were little, I always carried a Thetford loo for them. It saved so much time as they'd all seem to want a wee at the same time, so they'd get in the back and I'd lower the door down for their privacy and then they'd all wait their turn. It was way quicker and more hygienic than parking and traipsing my brood into McDonald's or Tesco. I will definitely consider another should I become a Nanna in a few years.

I have always loved vans; especially crew cabs. Like you mentioned they make the perfect family bus. You can do so much more with a vehicle like this. Good job there are cheaper models available, though! Greetings from Cumbria in the U.K. Stay safe and well.

Agree Transit vans have the potential to be much more than just tradesmen's tools. Occasionally get to drive a 9 seater mini bus version at work and love it, great driving position, comfy seats and plenty of modern gadgets, what's not to like!

That MSRT is in a different league, but we chose a Berlingo over the raft of SUV's that we looked at. We've got the elevated driving position of an SUV, the space of a big family car and the practicality of a van rolled into one. £22k is the bargain of the century.

I'm sorry, but despite the advantages of the latest large steel boxes now coupled with both speed and comfort, with the declining driving standards on U.K roads, I'm more and more frequently being surrounded by the proliferation of morons driving these things which you're unable to see through, which cause much diminished visibility of the road ahead, it makes my blood boil. I'd like to say "rant over", but the clip at 12:34 demonstrates my frustration perfectly. I really don't think the majority of drivers of these vehicles realise how much they block your view, even when you're sitting 2 seconds behind.

I have a 2017 msport had it from new now got 60,000miles on it and ive drove non stop to south spain with no problems. I would say though that the wetbelts are a problem and the recall doesnt fix the problem. They change the belt and i will then last another 60,000miles £1500 to replace. And i know because ive just had my belt checked at fords and the told me it started delaminating and if the belt breaks up it block the oil getting round the engine and will seize the engine. I checked the price for recon engine and its about £5000 fitted. So change the belts at 60,000 or risk the engine.

I have the same van, 21 plate, yellow, and I can say that it is fantastic. This is the ideal vehicle for say a outgoing family, wife and kids and all your bikes and camping gear, or for someone like me who just had to have one.

Well this is a bit different. I have to admit, when I was a younger man in a previous life I drove a lot of vans and they are really comfortable to drive. Regularly took a Mercedes Sprint to Stranraer from the South Coast and never a problem.The same has to be said for a Zafira.... But now I drive a BMW 330e M Sport, much more fun to drive but no nearly as comfortable.

I like that Transit your using and the colour is gorgeous! One thing that has slightly pissed me off is you guys parking your Transits in Disabled Bays!!! Yes I agree they weren't many people needing them at the time of filming but that would be a poor excuse wouldn't it be? Shame to spoil a good video Peter.

David it was 0800 in the morning ! The shop and garden centre didn’t open until 0900. They were there for loading from 0700 and we were with them for all that time. No need to be ‘pissed off’ just don’t credit me for being that thoughtless 🤷‍♂️

I have a full size L4 H3 Transit in the Limited spec, opted to pay the extra £600 for metallic Chrome Blue paint, (it's identical to the blue van in Ford Promotional video) it's a stunning van, so comfortable, loads of goodies, heated seats/mirrors/windscreen, 8 way power drivers seat etc, etc. I've only seen one other Transit like it but I'd love a MSRT Transit Custom as my every day rise to replace my car.

Had a Merc Vito Sport X for the last 7/8 years, will not change until something better comes out or the LEZ catches up with me, love the utility of it , 9 bikes and 3 passengers to Italy was the fullest i got in it, , the grunt of the 3L V6 and the Merc interior!

Expensive for what is a poorly fitted body kit. Unfortunately I have the experience of warranty claims and accident repairs on these things and they are just horrible to sort out. People buy them forgetting it's a commercial and expect perfection, two words that don't go together.

For different reasons (wanting to keep the HRV in mint condition) I’m looking to get a van in the near future. One for the dogs crate to go in (need the back seats down permanently in the Honda) and also for when I’m out with the bikes somewhere. Can afford to be slightly less precious about keeping the back so clean and tidy 👍🏻

You do realise the legal top speed you can do in a van is different from a car? It’s generally 10mph less, so 60 on a motorway instead of 70, 50 instead of 60. Although if you have a motorhome you can do the same speed as a car. How stupid is that? Myself I have a VW T6 Highline Kombi in yellow👍

Actually the speed limit for a van in the UK is 50mph on a single carriageway, 60mph on a dual carriageway and 70th on the motorway 👍

Thanks for the review. Useful for bikes, tools, bags of sailing kit etc. How easy is it to operate this van as an occasional camper by taking/replacing out the rear seats and cab divide?

I have the Transit Custom M1 bus variant. I find it more versatile than a crew cab. I took out the last row of seats and can fold the rest when hauling. An extremly versatile vehicle with all the toys.

i drove a first or 2nd gen of the fwd transits Tourneo and i bloody well loved it. high up, f-ton of visibility, take bot rear seats out when you need to carry a load, effin great :)

Looks like Bumblebee has quite a few admirers on this trip and you have a soft spot for it too. As you say, if you have an active lifestyle and need to carry bikes, RC planes etc plus a family this type of vehicle is ideal. Brilliant video as always.

My mate bought a transit crew cab as a family wagon to put all his stuff in and tow a caravan, he has the better seating which is the separate seats rather than the bench seat. More adjustable apparently. He also got it 12 months old for around 25k so definitely good money.

Been driving vans (on and off) for 40 years.... Love them.... Had a VW T4, it drove very well and had 200K miles on the clock.... So £60K over 150k (or so) miles could be considered good value for money... :-)))

£60 grand is a lot of cash for a van albeit a very comfortable one with loads of space. I think my Honda CR-V doubles as a bit of a van but nowhere as expensive! Sounds like a an EddChina project for someone buying a more modest commercial....

Can you do me a favour. The next time you test a VAG car navigate with Apple Maps and you should get turn directions on the driver display. Make a wrong turn and it should recalculate on the main display. Does the driver display get stuck on recalculating. You have to cancel nav and start navigation again to fix it. Thanks

Having done the same journey in a variety of vehicles from a Vw transporter to a vw up! The journey up is always worse than the journey back.. I once did the journey right up to Peterhead via Inverness ...vans are a lot lot different to how they used to be in the 50s and 60s .... today's vans are not industrial, they are car like and as comfortable as you could want ...

I have a Transit Custom for my business which is also 170bhp automatic, the 6 speed auto box is the only thing I'm not keen on as it holds the lower gears to long unlike the VW Transporter 7 speed dsg which drives more car like.

Absolute pain in the ass ordering replacement parts for these! Anything not fitted in the ford factory, Ford do not supply them!! They have to be mail ordered from Wales and cost a small fortune and can take weeks to arrive! As a ford dealer we have to order them and take the flack from the customer when they can’t have their parts quick!! People usually don’t think about this when they buy these dressed up vans.. Gypsies like them too.. steeling full body kits and wheels from 3 brand new vehicles parked up on site..

Welcome to “VanWorld” Peter! I have owned one in the past and it was the most useful vehicle I have ever had. I really wish I had one now but our house restoration is mostly done now and Mrs HQB tells me that I don’t want one! Well…I think it might be worth a test drive one day…😀😀😀. I did spec a dry fully spec’d Transit automatic recently and it was £43,000…our builders have two 21/71 plates in dark grey with huge alloys and Golden Bronze with “everything”…so they kept their old vans for work and the new ones for weekends! Stay safe…keep peddling! 😎😎😎😎Richard.

We changed up from a V70 turbo to a Citroen Jumpy crew cab van as our main family vehicle. I love that thing. The loading bay is a bit longer than yours in the Transit, so I often put the four bikes in and then add lots of other stuff for our holidays etc. I did a training camp week in Italy back in 2018 and driving the van there and back was a great. 1100km on a day and I wasn't that tired when I came in. We did exchange the double passenger seat with a decent single one, as that is much more comfortable. Other than that, pop on a podcast or some music and off you go. The good thing is, that I now have a much less practical car as our second vehicle, because the van is practical enough to compensate. 😉

Hi Peter I had the previous model, I had a 2016 m.sport crew cab in ford performance blue ,it was a fabulous van but it was ultra unreliable. So much so ii sold it .I have since ordered a brand new vw t6.1 high line lwb dsg swamper camper van from van haven in Blandford Dorset.

I considered the tourneo / transit and even test drive one but ultimately opted for the more powerful VW 6.1 204 bhp which also came with 4 wheel drive.

Drove to a military base west of Glasgow in a knackered works transit in 2014, wish we hade one of those!! And good old Teebay services!! The best services.... in the worrrrrrrld!!
