Episode 1! YAY! Let’s talk design! Sometimes the Van Tours with the most views on RU-vid have a LOT of design problems! If you’re interested in this lifestyle, you should know what to look for, and how to know if a van is designed for convenience & comfort, or just to be pretty.
Original Video: • VAN TOUR: FULL-TIME SO...
I’m Margaret and I’ve lived in multiple vehicles all over the world. I love tiny home design, travel, and efficiency. But there are very few voices in the vanlife community that are willing to be real about the campervan layouts we see all over the internet. Let’s get to it! Enjoy!

We’re so excited to begin with this series! Keep in mind, this is very opinion-based, and van dwellers make layout decisions based on all kinds of factors (budget, location, hobbies, preferences, etc.) However, van tours are all about showing off what you live in, but people end up copying these layouts, and then the same design flaw continues to live on. Let me know what you think below! Thanks for watching :)

This is the second video I watch from this channel and I have to say that I find the concept of van tour reaction disturbing. Why do we need this when all the community reacts with their comments? Why ones opinion matters more, just because she has a better camera... and maybe looks? I built my own van and it was an adventure with a lot of pain and rewards in the end. Now I can tell from experience that the only reason to diy (especially in Europe) is the fun of it, otherwise you just lose your time (and often money). We are doing what campervan manufacturers were doing 40-50 years ago, so I am pretty sure that they could be laughing with our vans all day. They are polite and serious enough not to... So having one of us trying to profit by criticising the vans of others is immoral...

Hi Margaret, do you recommend a short skoolie I've noticed they are more affordable then a sprinter or promaster. It would be for myself and 2 indoor kitties. I'm concerned about propane though. Any advice??? Thank you.

I think this is a brilliant idea and I'm so glad you're doing it! I love hearing about the pros and cons of different design choices and how they adapt to the reality of van living. The only thing I would challenge is that I plan to use an induction cooktop but it's not for looks at all, it's for safety reasons as I don't want to use any propane in my van. Plus I would rather keep my energy to be renewable as much as possible to make up for the gas I use to drive my van (I hope for an electric van someday). I do know an induction stove is very inefficient but that's why I invested in extra solar panels (400w panels) and battery (2500Wh with more to come eventually - can be charged via electrical outlets too, for example, at a Starbucks in 3-4 hours) and as someone who chases 75F degree and sunny locations, I have a lot of sun available usually.

Hey! I follow Sidney and her induction cooker actually broke and she now uses a propane stove now. She has also openly talked about the pros and (mostly) cons of not having a fixed bed. She has a podcast and is very open about challenges and honest about lessons she's learned and tips. She's a wonderful person and a great resource for all things solo female vanlife

I gotta say ; when YT first recommended your video reviews on my favorite vanlifers I was hesitant to say the least ; I guess I come from the toxic celebrity review channels and thought would be the same; BUT boy was I wrong; I Love your reviews they are so helpful and definitely wish I would have watched these before I cut a hole on my roof for a skylight; defeated the whole purpose of insulting Van is like an oven; I am in process of patching up that hole and removing the skylight it’s not worth it at all it also takes up space on roof that I could have for my solar panels (which yes I made the mistake of not making my solar panels a priority over the skylight). I am obsessed with your reviews and can’t wait to watch more.

I just looked up a 3 cu foot insignia dorm frig. It draws 1.5 amps at 115 volts=172.5 watts. A inverter will loose 15-20% so you are at about 200 watts when it is running. Cost is $139, if it ran half the time it could work with her system, provided she got a gas cook top. A dometic 3 cu draws 175 watts.

Margaret.. the biggest advantage of having a bulkhead/dividing wall is protection in an accident. It amazes me that no one seems to mention this. Every single item, even the most innocuous item, becomes a missile in an accident. My son-in-law is a fireman who has had to cut many people out of their vehicles after an accident. He tells me that you should think about everything that is loose in your car… those few items loose on your back seat could end up killing you. Can you imagine what would happen to all those items in a campervan?! Especially knife racks that you see so often!

My ideal build (money no object) would include a 2-element induction cooktop, it would also include more battery storage and more solar power generation. I have to agree with Margaret - with only 2 x 95 batteries and 400W solar it would be MUCH smarter to be cooking with gas.

Where have I seen the girl in this video? I feel like I’ve seen her in another video (the van owner). Ok I think I saw a different van tour of hers. I do think the colors are gorgeous, but I do agree and was thinking in a different video I was watching, that white seems to me like it would show dirt so much... I’m not the best cleaner in the world tho. Lol. So, maybe OCD people would be perfectly ok since they r always cleaning anyway. 🤷🏻‍♀️ love the ceiling color. So calming.

3:46 personally, i wouldn't feel safe with gas and propane that are highly flammable in a van that runs on gasoline (combustion).. but that might just be my anxiety lol it also depends on where you are though. if you're in a foreign country, trying to buy propane might be a hassle but if you're in the u.s it might make more sense.

Very cool video and good review! But I have to disagree with your fridge point, 110 or 230V fridges are actually way more efficient as a 12v one as their usually better insulated and there’s less voltage loss over the cables. The crucial point is to have a very efficient inverter which is placed close to the batteries so it can be turned on all the time.

With the Mason jar, maybe she kept it from rattling by keeping it compact & I think those jar is taller meaning the shelf is deep with a wooden bar. With her Electrical Sys, I bet her sys info might be wrong. She did admit she "design it but someone build it" & the fridge is 110 but she "had no idea how her builder made it". So it is not actually 259 amp for her sys to run.

I realize you would probably never consider a van in which one can't stand up, but I'm wondering as a new subscriber, if you do any mini-van reviews, or even have some on the small Connect. I would like more ideas for a mini as I'm in my 70's but would like to go out on the road for the winters only. I've had a Class C with a full bath & all the works, but don't want anything that costly now. I think with pull-outs etc. & perhaps a screen house, I'd be living outside most of the time anyway, so for 4 months of the winter, I think I could handle not having all the pluses. However, I would want something in which I could cook, have a fridge, and go to the bathroom especially during rainy weather. Do you have any such reviews?

Margaret, I am planning on getting a Ford Transit in the near future. I have a short list of essentials and have need of your expert advice. Sleeping,, food prep\ storage(with fridge\ freezer compartment, clothes storage, shower\ toilet area, and will be accompanied by my cat, so I need place for her to stretch out and box and water area. This all needs to be incorporated into the mechanics of what makes the 148” medium -to-high roof van work as a home. Solar\electric - NO PROPANE! I need light from windows, as I don’t want our space to be cave-like. Cat likes to sun herself on a flat surface, and I like a window at the sink. Tall order, but your program has shown me you are just the person I need to guide me. The designer that will help build my Transit doesn’t seem to understand that women HAVE to have a shower stall! What gives here?! I can put in extra insulation to make up for the windows. I need to have accessibility to back doors for exit.

This is a great review, but I’m going to parse your word choices about the induction cooktop. It’s actually an extremely efficient, and environmentally sound way to cook. It’s her electric system that’s woefully inadequate, and inefficient. I have a two burner Duxtop induction cooktop. It’s peak draw, if I’m using both burners at max setting, is only 1800 watts. I’m designing my rig to be completely electric, aside from the actual engine moving the vehicle.

I respect your experience as a long time follower but I didn't get interested in induction for apprarace: they're cleaner and I thought they're faster and more efficient too. Google just said 1800 but I'm sure I've seen 150 double induction tops. 1800/60 is 30, x15 of full power of which wouldn't be constant, that'd 450w. 150 camper induction if I remember right is 37.5 but I'm not sure if that's right :s :o I haven't started building yet, looking into it lots and lots saving

She has been really good about admitting to her regrets, she has a recent vid on her tik Tok... her number one was the induction cooktop, number 2 was the bed and number 3 was not going lithium- vm.tiktok.com/ZMJS1815E/

Ugh I really want to do induction because I hate the idea of having fuel around.....

I suspect that she only sleeps on one side of that dinette when she sleeps alone and her dog sleeps on the other and she puts those extra cushions in the hallway at night. She may even be resorting to just a sleeping bag to skip sheets. She really didn’t want to show us that. Lol

How about just using it as two twin beds. Your channel is extremely informative thank you.

So like i know u don't like induction cooktops, but the plus side is they don't take a lot of space. So it's not a huge penalty to have one just in case.
